I will say that last year I found a link to that Gashcat album and I did enjoy it very much, and found it to be very similar to Neutral Milk Hotel. I meant to buy it, but I forgot.

But putting my feelings aside, we generally promote our own bands in the General forum. ;)

Sounds like someone trying to be NMH. Boring, I'll just listen to the real thing. Assuming you are one of the people from the band- get your own sound and don't just ape others.

calm down jr, i made an account to ask a question about my nmh box set not too long ago. i'm not in the band, though i can see why you'd think that with a new account. i found out about these guys pretty much yesterday, it's not like new music is the usual on a nmh forum anyway. i saw some thread about the mountain goats and other related bands so i thought i'd post about these guys.

Ah! The Jeff Signal! :D

I think it should be Jeff letting Anne out of the coffin

I'm pretty sure I made that before the boxset and tours happened, so the meaning behind it is that Anne's angel is helping Jeff rise from the dead, and Win Butler and Colin Meloy are wincing in terror.

spiffy_kimbean

Colin Meloy sure looks like he's doing way more than wincing.

Their last album sucked SO MUCH! Ugh! It was awful.

I liked a couple songs from it, but one of them was the song that sounds like a Tom Petty song...

Otherwise it was pretty yucky.

Barenaked Ladies are all right by me. Then again I'm not nearly as hateful as most of you. I don't, however, like the Decemberists.

Dear everyone that likes NMH or any of the other great Elephant 6 groups out there,
This is Kyle from Gashcat. I just came across this and feel like there are things that need to be cleared up. Obviously NMH had a big impact on me as a writer and musician, that goes without saying and I still have a great deal of respect for everyone in the band and the E6 group itself. First off though, I would like to address the comparison, the rip off, or whatever you'd like to call it... I do apologize, we started a band and it was the first time I was really getting into enjoying what I was writing and Aeroplane was the only thing I was into at that time in my life, as it is for lots of folks I'm sure... But I made the mistake of hearing this awesome thing and thinking of it as a genre. Looking back, I wish I would've done things a little differently, sure... But all I can do now is move in a different direction.

As far as the whole youtube comment goes, that's completely wrong. In response to the question: "Are you sick of getting compared to NMH?", I responded, "Yeah, I'm trying to get out of that whole comparison thing with the next album. I can't really remember the last time I listened to Aeroplane Over The Sea". In no way did I intend for that to sound like, "NMH? Never heard of'em".

I feel like my reason for writing this is to apologize and to let you know that I agree with you about your opinions on Gashcat, that's why this tour in May will be Gashcat's last tour. Rejoice. Anyway, I guess I'm done here. Sorry E6 folks, sorry Jeff, sorry to whoever it may have offended.

If any of you actually did like some of the Gashcat stuff though, I'm not going to stop writing music. I'll come up with some new band, but this time it'll sound exactly like Buffalo Springfield... So keep an eye out...

But really, I do hope someday we can all get along. See you around.

Dammit. Don't break up, just make it less obvious.

Also, if you guys make it up to Minneapolis, I'd totally see you. My Flaming Lips rip-off band will totally play with you.

I mean just break down the name.

Gashcat

"Gas" is what you put in cars. Cars have a setting called "neutral."

"H" obviously stands for "hotel."

"Cat" is an animal that drinks "milk."

Also Jeff's favorite show is Cash Cab, so the similar sound there is no mistake.

Reunion is a great album, but it's absolutely baffling how much these guys sound like NMH. When I listen to it, I like to pretend that it's NMH's unreleased third album because it's almost good enough to be that.

That's the impression I got from them, probably more the instrument swapping and stage presence.

That and Win wrote the liner notes for the Fire re-issue of Aeroplane a while back and is very outspoken about NMH's influence on them.

Oh yeah, I was at the show where someone in the audience shouted "JEFF, WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SHOW?" and Jeff replied "I think you know the answer to that one, my friend. "
Then they brought out a TV on stage and we all watched Cash Cab for a while. The band sat on a couch in front of the TV and did a MST3K commentary kinda thing. It was neat.
