I'm surprised that people don't like Innocence Reaches. I think it's the overall best album since Paralytic Stalks.

I think that I just prefer the electronic shift in the music again. Skeletal Lamping is my favorite oM album and while I love everything Kevin has put out, I think the last couple of albums, Lousy & Aureate, were great in their own way but somehow missing that frenetic 'of Montreal-ness'. To me, they were just good, 'typical' albums. Innocence Reaches is unique and surprising and adventurous and I've missed that from Kevin.

Looking at all the different styles of music he has released in the past 20 years, it's hard to believe that the band has any fans at all, actually. I guess that people will gravitate to whichever albums that are closer to the style of music that they usually enjoy.

I love your view, Romalotti, and I always value artists who work that way the most (Prince, Bowie also often changed their sound completely). And I welcome every change Kevin makes. But somehow I don't feel Innocence Reaches as much as almost any other oM album (besides Bedside Drama). It needs more variety, especially the 2nd half. Let's Relate, It's Different For Girls and especially My Fair Lady belong in a list of best oM recordings for me. but of the last 7 songs, there's just 1 I can hum at this moment (Chaos obviously).

but the great thing with oM that you have to work hard before an album kicks in. that has been the case for me since Satanic Panic and it's what makes me interested. my favorite album also is Skeletal Lamping. but one of my top 5 oM songs is on Aureate (Empyrean Abattoir). and the album feels more like an album (as does Lousy) where IR feels like a collection of leftovers to me. Kevins doesn't sing enough for me, he is more speaking a lot of the lyrics. he also does on Daughter Of Cloud, but that one actually is a collection instead of an album and it is more suprising to me, much more is happening.

Freek, you are right about IR lacking cohesion. The art rock songs don't seem like they belong with the electronic songs. But they are all great songs. And the second half had some amazing tunes -- Nursing Slopes is one of my favorite oM songs of all time! Maybe this is a transitional album like Sunlandic was, or maybe it's supposed to be all over the place like The White Album. They can't all be perfect like SL, right?

Christina- I second your love for Bedside Drama. They don't make albums like that anymore. Although they should.
