Is it common knowledge that the little ditty at the start of "score from augusta" is sampled from the van dyke parks song "donovans colours"?

i can't speak for everyone else, but that's news to me.

I was surprised to notice that too. However, the Beulah sample was taken from a sound effects compilation ("nickelodeon starting up"); obviously the same source that Van Dyke used. Interesting that the 2 albums were recorded over 30 years apart. I guess a good sound effect is hard to kill!

I had noticed it, but was familiar with Beulah first.

About 6 or 7 years ago (I don't do such things any more), I had just gotten Song Cycle and sat down to enjoy it with a newly gotten bag of kind bud and a box of whippits. Not that I went through all that with the first listen of the album or to that album exclusively, but I was quite out of it, listening to something way more insane than Smile, and was slapped into some sort of coherence when I heard that sound which was sampled in "Score From Augusta." I was delighted and also proud of myself for instantly making that connection in such a state.

Let's think of other samples of other artists which appear in E6-related records..

There's that bit of barking from Banana and Louie (the dogs at the end of "Caroline No" by the Beach Boys) in the Apples' "Silvery Light of a Dream."

I used to think I could hear bits of the Beatles' "Only a Northern Song" (the out of tune brass band snippets) buried in the mix on "Joy" by the Circulatory System, but Chris Bishop, who mixed that album, denied awareness of this, unless Will had that stuff on his home-recorded tracks prior to bringing them in the studio.

I thought there were other such things too, but it's been a few years since I've thought of such things.

I've thought about starting a thread about this before, because I'm curious about these kinds of things.
