View Full Version : Neutral Milk Hotel Rarities CD

Is this ever going to happen? Is there any info out there other than what OT has posted? The text "Neutral Milk Hotel - Rarities CD" at the bottom of their Sometime In The Future release list hardly seems informative. I'm VERY anxious. Is it songs from the old cassettes? A full-band live performance? Something else? I'm personally hoping for a live performance from the full band.

this rarities disc (set) has been discussed for years.. how hard could this be? the fanbase is there.

Before ITAOTS was released in some interview I remember reading Jeff Mangum talking about how they have recorded 18 songs or some number more than the 11 songs that made it on the album - it would be intensely fantastic if there were ITAOTS outtakes on the set of early Neutral Milk Hotel recordings.
But indeed if Orange Twin were to release this theres no doubt it would sell well and there is a demand for it. Surely it would be worth going through the old stuff and putting them on CD. The NMH fanbase has been increasing greatly over the last 6 years because of the growth of the internet, and of course Magnet listing ITAOTS as the best album of the past 10 years, and Pitchfork calling it the 3rd or 4th best album of the 90's on their list.

Keep your pants on. we've gotten half and album's worth of non released NMH/Jeff songs approved by Jeff, but the rest he's not interested in releasing, so we are trying to get more stuff that he likes. We are thinking now that it will be two discs, the second bieng a DVD of a live show that we played in San Francisco.
Just remember... It takes time to produce such quality! and Slow and steady wins the race! and What did one saggy boob say to the other?
A: We'd better get some support around here quick, before people think we're nuts!
ok, I'll stop.

I predict it won't have the crazier stuff from the cassette-releases like "Los Angeles" from Hype City Soundtracks, and the prank-call stuff which I have yet to hear. The DVD part sounds very good, and so does the unreleased Mangum songs part, and the fact that it is an album of NMH songs sound VERY good being thats what it is and all...

Now...are these half an albums worth of songs unreleased in the sense that they weren't on jittery jones/aeroplane/avery? Or are they unreleased in the sense that they were not in the tape releases hype city/shortcake/random bootlegs/etc?
Basicialy I'm just wondering If I can finally look forward to at least half a cd of new songs from NMH, or if it's just going to be a cassete/bootleg comp. A dvd would be fantastic though, either way.
If you are going to put old tape releases on, or if you need to to fill up the album, love you on a tuesday, wood guitar, and the original version of my dream girl don't exist (pretty funny compared to the one on jittery) are probably the pick of the litter from the tapes, imo.

What? My Dreamgirl Don't Exist wasn't on the Jittery Joe's album in any form.

Yeah, the DVD will probably be the "Bottom of the Hill" show or something, I meant when the person was talking about the live version of "My Dreamgirl Don't Exist" which I've only ever heard live on the Aquarious Records bootleg thats what they probably meant - not Jittery Joe's..
The Aquarious Records bootleg is available at Elephant6.com by the way..

I have a couple bottlegs and stuff with the standard fare on them (early cassette stuff, acoustic Jeff stuff i.e. little birds or dreamgirl, compilation tracks, Aeroplane-era live), but the possibility of hearing more - ANYTHING more - excites me. Please dont make us wait too long!

By the way, heres the link to the interview I first talked about where it mentions 19 recorded tracks being considered for "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea".
http://www.virginiamusicflash.com/neutral.htm
Grip: How many songs are you going to record?
Mangum: We've got 19 (songs) that could be on the album, but it'll get scaled down to a single record. But we could take all kinds of different directions. I'm not exactly sure what it's going to be like.

Don't you love interweb sites where the words move but the background stays there?
I find it delicious.
But as for these 19 songs, I guess some of them we could have heard before - 'I Will Bury You In Time', maybe stuff like 'Worms in the Wind' (although it really, really wouldn't fit with the rest of the album). But what is the likelihood of these songs having been recorded, would you say?
And I'm incredibly intrigued about the Buddha thing.

according to andrew at orangetwin this release isn't happening anymor ebecause jeff decided he doesn't like the unreleased songs enough....i hope he changes his mind someday.
...
or records songs he DOES like for public consumption.

Aw, man. Should have filled up the other half of the album with live tracks and released it while Jeff still had the unreleased songs approved. Oh, well. I guess we'll never hear any Jeff Mangum songs we haven't heard already. That's really depressing. Best not to dwell on it. I'll just have to put on Aeroplane and enjoy the bliss.

I would love to hear a more 'polished' version of Little Birds, and a more hi-fi version of My Dream Girl, which is one of my favourite NMH songs. The quality of the Aquarius boot is pretty good, though I prefer the original demo version for the lyrics.
It would be nice for Love You On A Tue. to get included on an actual NMH disc too, if only because it's their most 'rockin' song.
Oh, and Sailing Through.
And...well, I think it all needs to be heard ;)
I have a couple of boots which collect the demo's and what have you, including a song called 'The Gifted Children', which is ACTUALLY a song called Neutral Milk Hotel, BY The Gifted Children, as far as I understand. It's a cool track, anyone know anything about this band?

Love You on a Tuesday (aka Tuesday Moon) is in fact on an actual NMH disc. Go pick up the "Everything Is" single, and you'll find the Hype City Soundtrack version as a b-side.
Ah cool, thanks for the info. ;)
Yeah, I like that Gifted Children song, would be curious to hear more from them.

Oh wait...if you got to www.thegiftedchildren.com, it's the bands official website.
Um. I swear that wasn't there the last time I was trying to check them out...
There's 50, count em, 50 tracks available for download.
There is also a discography longer than Mr Long-Arms longest arm.

I think it'll be wonderful, regardless of what songs are chosen for it. I've only heard about 3 neutral milk songs that weren't released on records, so it will be special. just because some people have bought bootlegs or downloaded the whole history of neutral milk songs off the internet is pretty silly reasoning for why it would be "so disappointing" if the orange twin release had the same material on it. if you've already downloaded it all & have been listening to it for years, that was your decision, but it wasn't officially released in any way (ie the person who created those songs had no hand at all in you hearing them), so it's your own fault if you're disappointed by what's put out by orange twin.
also, I think jeff should write a story, or some of his paintings or collages or something should be included in the artwork..

because my personal idea of enjoying songs & music doesn't allow for downloading files off a computer or buying cd-r's that some bastard sells on ebay makes me a "self-righteous asshole"?
give me a break. there are people in this world who don't own computers and don't expect everything someone's ever put down on tape to be "available" to them at the click of a button.

I hope some of the bootlegged stuff that I've already heard sees a propper release on this rarities collection. It would be nice to have it all on vinyl or at least a cd with some nice cover art and liner notes.
Also, how does not having heard unreleased nmh stuff make someone a self-righteous asshole?

you're just depriving yourself because of some outdated beliefs.
but I am alive now, believing these things, so they're not outdated. you're quite wrong.
I didn't say I was "better" than anyone. I said I was excited about the idea of old songs being released, and that those who would be disappointed would only be so as a consequence of their own choosing... I said nothing that could be interpretted as "complaining about the lack of availability" of anything, either. I only contributed to this thread to say it would be really nice if those cds ever came out at all, regardless of what songs were on them, because all the previous posts were pretty much people saying how "boring" it would be if it was all songs they'd already downloaded. which seemed pretty annoying, and depressing.
but what is the point of responding to you at all? clearly you also automatically assume that people who choose not to drive cars, or watch television, or eat dead animals are all "self-righteous assholes" as well. since, obviously, cars and computers and televisions and dead animals have all become SO affordable that anyone who doesn't participate in the consumption of these things is only doing so to bolster their own ego. so, go on believing that, and attacking people, and calling strangers on message boards assholes and all that, I'm sure it must be quite a life.

Damn you, Jeff, just put that stuff out there, who cares how disturbing or crappy or whatever the problem is. I for one think lo-fi recordings are the best. I would love to see both albums rereleased in far worse quality. Skips and all!
