View Full Version : The slide into.......
I have sort of a general question, not neccesarily related to Of Montreal. Have you all noticed a move towards the alt. country slide guitar playing happening in indie music? I know it has been there for a while, but now it just seems like everyone is doing it (of course not everyone, please don't take that literal message boarders).
My other question is what do you think of it? I like the slide guitar, but am becoming discouraged by the amount of albums I am hearing it on. I was talking to my brother about it and he is just eating it up, maybe that is why i am noticing it.
To bring it all back to Of Montreal, could you imagine Kevin throwing it into one of their songs? Hmm... I don't know how i would feel, but then again I am sure he could make it fit in so nice and snug.

i know what you mean. i personally like slide guitar. of montreal has actually some slide guitar on some songs. i say, the more the merrier, as i would for harmonies, percussion, and home-made sound effects.

slide guitar is a good thing. i was also thinking that of montreal uses slide guitar quite a bit. steel guitar is also good and i think there is a lack of that in the elephant 6 realm.

Its funny because I was thinking awhile back that slide guitar would be nice to hear in songs, and then suddenly I hear it quite a bit.. I like it, but I know what you mean about things getting over used...
Personally.. I want to hear more banjo.. I love the banjo.. I wish I knew how to play it.. I love that plunky sound!

that's a good call sister to dolemite. banjo, mandolin, washboard, washtub bass, harmonica, 12-string, what will they think of next?
ps: does anyone know anyone in the austin, tx area who plays piano/organ?

dolceola, an instrument played frequently by washington phillips, has a very nice sound to it, similar to an autoharp. i'm fine with whatever instruments bands want to use, i'm certainly not opposed to the sounds of montreal has made thus far. i was just wanting to comment on the depth of soul and beauty that can be produced by either a lap or pedal steel.

In my case it means "slightly mediocre"
Seriously, I'm okay I guess. I know all the chords, scales, ect. I read music like a snail with a limp. I can play kind of fast sometimes.
I usually play celtic stuff on the mando, but I always wanted to find a way to intergrate it into a psych-pop context. It's really hard to find other musicians who are interested in that sort of thing.
I also own a mondolin, but I pretty much just know some of the chords, I wish I had a better knowledge of scales.
i certainly am interested in a mandolin psych-pop thingy, I have been trying to do the same for my own music with the little knowledge of the mandolin that I have.
I own a Fostex MR8 track so I make these little songs, but I have yet to find the spot for a mandolin, but I always think that it is because I don't really know how to play it. I'm sure it would fit in.

For all the mandolin information you can handle visit www.mandolincafe.com (http://www.mandolincafe.com)
or, you can just email me if your interested in scales and chords and stuff. In my opinion, it's much easier than guitar because it's tuned in 5ths.
Or if you live near Ohio/Michigan we can start a band and I can play the mando parts:)
Mandolin is a great instrument, and I think it would be cool to hear some more in psych-pop/fuzz-folk music. I wish I was better at writing songs. *sigh*
