View Full Version : a controversial opinion....

The Battle of Electricity is a better album then Are You Sleepy. There, I said it. For the longest time Sleepy was one of my favorite albums ever, mainly cause there are about 4 or 5 incredible songs on there. I thought Electricity was a pale comparison. However, once I started listening to Electricity more I realized, the horror!, that popular (relatively speaking) opinion was wrong. I think almost every Gerbils fan thinks Sleepy is better but it's not. Electricity is so much more consistent. Sure, Sleepy has those 5 high points but the rest is distinctly mediocre. Electricity has only 1 or two mind blowing songs (Are You Underwater, Fail To Mention) but the rest is just really, really good. Sleepy is an album that reveals itself to you immediately. With Electricity, there is much more to it; many more layers. It takes a lot longer to get into which is why I think most people think Sleepy is better; they don't give Electricity enough of a chance. Anyways, long story short, Are You Sleepy is great, The Battle of Electricity is mind blowing.

I think Are you Sleepy is better, but I'm biased because i've never heard any of the battle of Electricity.

I think a more controversial opinion would be to say that both records, in the scheme of things, are pretty forgettable.

I think the Gerbils are a bit like the Great Lakes... they're nice enough but nothing groundbreaking. There are lots of bands like them out there... I felt much the same about Snowglobe. It's all right I suppose. I think the E6 canon has a lot of second string bands which are a bit blah. I'm sure other people feel the same way about some of the E6 bands I love (Essex Green, the Minders, Dressy Bessy etc etc).

Aww. I really, really dig the gerbils.

The great lakes on the other hand.... I think diamond times serves better as a coaster than an album

Well, without the Great Lakes we would never have had that comedy cover by Elekibass. And the cover of their first record is eerily prophetic. And I'm sure they're all lovely guys.

Did I mention that the Ladybug Transistor are a bit dull too?

Both are in my top e6 albums, but I do think BAE is the better.

that wasn't too good of an abbreviation.

We should probably start a topic about which e6 bands you find meh or dull or whatever.

Actually, I agree with you. I don't necessarily think that Electricity is better... it's just that I just like it more. It is a lot more complex, and I can really get into it more. However, I still really like Sleepy. To be honest, they almost sound to me like they were made by completely different bands.

The two albums have benerally different feels to me, so my favorite changes depending on what mood I'm in.
I've always thought Great Lakes were really dull. But Ladybug Transistor is one of my favorites, or at least Albemarle Sound is.

I prefer Are You Sleepy.

though I'm not sure The Gerbils, as an entity, can actually stir a controversy
