I heard a rumor he was going to live in the forest and write songs with a tape player than mail them that way he could focus on writing and not the mailbox outside his window singing songs about sailors and sharks with their fleshy fetuses on fire. And also the corruption of society and stuff.
I hope so that would be cool

well.. let's see. a friend of mine met conor oberst (bright eyes) at a gig in leeds, UK earlier this year, and said that jeff was in brooklyn, at the moment. he also mentioned that he and laura are no more, though i know not if this either old news, or wrong news..

I heard Jeff Mangum was "holed up" with Saddam H. and Osama B.L., and that G.W. was determined to "route 'em out" in whatever corner of the earth they were hiding in.

this isn't not a lie...

Jeff Mangum and Syd Barrett are currently writing and recording music together in some flat in Cambridge.

Heres something I read (not from me)

"A former bandmember of Jeff's said that he has bought a house in Nova
Scotia, so that's the word from Athens. It has been a month or so since I
heard that from a certain bearded brassman, but I would think that home
ownership would anchor Jeff in one place for a while."

Interesting...

there were rumors before that he was in canada so that nova scotia story could be believable.

aw, when i heard he was maybe in canada i hoped i'd see him roaming the streets of calgary... o well, nova scotia is so wonderfully beautiful, so if he is infact there, he's probably having a lovely time...

If Jeff could afford to buy a house, he must be doing some crazy good work. I mean, his musical stuff doesnt seem like its exactly raking in the dough, hehe.
actually yah

does anybody know what he does/did for a living?

Radiophobic Nate

I heard he moved to Berlin with Iggy Pop and is collaborating with Brian Eno. He also has plans to form a barber shop quartet with Damo Suzuki, Mark E. Smith and Falcore the luck dragon from the Never Ending Story. Also, I'm pregnant with his child.

I've some serious suspicions that Jeff is currently recording with Mark Hollis on a 'deaf' record. No further news so far...

this might be interesting for some of you to read...

anyway, i doubt anyone with actual information on his whereabouts would give a truthful location or occupation.

Great article, but I thought the author went too far in contacting Jeff's family and hounding him so. One of the things Jeff was escaping (in my opinion) was media hounds like this guy. He's not going make any sort of return if people keep doing this sort of thing to him.
I recently heard of an incident in which Jeff was going to go into the woods with a friend to just hang out and play guitar and stuff. Evidently word of it spread around and there were like fifty kids sneaking around in the forest trying to hear him play. I mean honestly, let the man be...!

Mirsathia
12-04-2003, 08:22 PM
50 kids? I dunno if there's that many people in my STATE that know about Jeff Mangum, let alone like him enough to go stalking him in the woods!

If I heard that, I wouldn't tell anyone else. I'd just... decide to go hiking that weekend. ^_^;

Radiophobic Nate
12-08-2003, 12:58 AM
I don't know first hand how many kids, but fifty was the estimation I was told. Realistically it might have been closer to fifteen? Who knows.

You really don't know anyone else who is into NMH? For the longest time I didn't know anyone else who had even heard of them, but evidently lots of kids around here are getting into it as of late (according to record store clerks here, Aeroplane has been selling at least a few copies every week pretty consistantly).

I know one person in NJ, the guy who got me into NMH. I've gotten one person in my class to say she 'liked' the music, but I doubt she'll care enough to buy the CDs. Most all people give a horrified "What the hell is THIS?" look if I play it. ;)

Those people are jerks.

Once my frirends Tim, Martha, Taniya and I drove to my hometown to see one of my high school friend's art shows. We listened to both On Avery Island and Aeroplane... from start to finish. Everyone in the car was into it, beautiful.

Man, that was one of my fondest memories of hanging out with Taniya before she moved to Wisconsin. I should write her again.

(I'm all about the nostalgia this evening.)

She's going to school in Stevens Point. I need to find someone who has a car (and a drivers licence) who'd want to go visit her with me.

"I guess I had this idea that if we all created our dream we could live happily ever after. So when so many of our dreams had come true and yet I still saw that so many of my friends were in a lot of pain ... I saw their pain from a different perspective and realized that I can't just sing my way out of all this suffering." - Jeff Mangum

Thats what he said about it

"Live in this house as long as you can. I don't mean the actual house, but the house of fiction I've made. The only thing I ask was to that when I've left, leave for good, and that you should burn the house down." CARL PORTER

I like to think Jeff read and followed this quote to heart. And knowing this, I enjoy what I have of his until his house was burnt down.....

how original of you...

and thank you william, though i have already read that quote. i was wondering something more specific. there had to be something that happened to him that made him lose sight of that fantasy - his dillusion that made him think music could fully cure all the world's suffering - that allowed him to see everyone around him was in pain despite all that aeroplane had brought about.

i heard that all the hype around were jeff is is all bullshit. someone told me he still lives in athens and is still playing alot of drums with people just doesn't write his own tunes. i live in nova scotia though so if he's here that'd be crazy. i'll go nuts if i see him walking down the streets of halifax

Thats the Orange Twin Records conservation community thing:

"We're organizing a pedestrian-based, conservation community nestled in 155 acres of woodlands outside of Athens, Georgia."

I'm probably wrong though.

I know a guy, and for all intents and purposes, let's call him bob. bob knows a guy who's girlfriend dumped him to go out with Jeff Mangum. I heard that a couple weeks ago, but I have no idea how long ago it happened. That made me happy.

outofstep23x

hahaha-I looked at that and realized that it made me sound like an asshole. I forgot to say that bob's friend was okay with it. No hard feelings or bitter breakups or anything. the story goes that she called and said "II've found someone else-Jeff Mangum" and the guy, being an avid NMH fan, said "I completely understand." I would have said the same thing to be honest...

sorry about that screwup in that last post...hehehe

It's funny how a guy can basically dissapear off the face of the earth : /

But really if he wants some privacy he can just come here to old boring South Dakota. Hell I'm guessing I'm one of five people in the whole state who's even heard NMH.

Anyways I think Jeff Magnum will come back one day, reunite NMH and create an album just as amazing as Aeroplane Over the Sea. Or least I hope so...

jeff is everywhere, and jeff is nowhere. and that's exactly where he wants to be.

i believe it was in that pitchfork article that had laura saying that none of the very few people in consistent contact with jeff would tell the truth as to his whereabouts.

the only credible facts that remain, however, are that he's been immersed in eastern european folk music, and going around recording much of it. according to orange twin, forthcoming 'field recordings' will be released. there's also that concert he and laura did in australia not too long ago... it doesn't really even matter. when he's ready to speak or play some more of the music we love for us, then we'll know about it.

I don't really understand why it matters where Mangum is. He'll be with us as long as he pleases, and we can enjoy his music while it lasts. As he said himself, "But don't hate her when she gets up to leave." Of course her should be him and she should be he, but it gets the point across. If he so desires to end his music-making then sobeit, and we should be happy that we've had an opportunity to enjoy him while we can.

According to Julian, televisions are actually aliens who want to be like mankind, but can only reflect what they see in the world around them through their screens.

:)

Incidentally, I wouldn't believe anything that a friend of Jeff's says. Because they'd want to protect Jeff's privacy, because they, more than anyone, would know that's what he'd want.

However, I did hear a story about a pig farm in Goa...
