This is official and not a hoax:

Julian Koster’s SAW will be caroling holiday and new years lullabies for doorsteps, with his gentle encouragement… (a carol or two)

On the evening of WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 20th in any of the near OUTLYING ISLANDS of Portland MAINE or PORTLAND itself, one might lure the aforementioned saw, by drawing a simple picture in the shape of an animal and cutting it out. Attaching to it a string. Writing on it’s back your address (and simple directions).. Bringing it to Portland’s Eastern Promenade path where one will find the Narrow Gauge Railroad. Following then these tracks to a small group of abandoned trains and there finding Another Boxcar Full Of Cranberries. Upon this, beside the word OCEAN in white pealing paint (and pealing red paint backround), finding a horizontal metal bar, and tying your animal to it by 4 o’clock on Wednesday. Beware of the stationmaster! The Caroling will take place some time between 6 and 9 in the evening,

On the evening of SATURDAY DECEMBER 23rd in BENNINGTON VERMONT, or near outlying areas, one might lure the aforementioned saw, by drawing a simple picture in the shape of an animal and cutting it out. Attaching to it a string. Writing on it’s back your address (and simple directions). Bringing it to the big white Church in Old Bennington, and tying it to the fence on Monument avenue near the entrance to the graveyard By 4 o’clock on Saturday. The Caroling will take place some time between 6 and 8 in the evening, and therefore may require an otherwise pleasant evening at home.

On Christmas Eve in CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUCETS or any place QUITE NEAR to it, One might lure the aforementioned saw, by drawing a simple picture in the shape of an animal and cutting it out. Attaching to it a string. Writing on it’s back your address (and simple directions). Going to the Park on Mount Auburn St. that is beside the Cambridge Skating Club with the circular walkway that extends to the Friends meeting place and Brattle Street. This park is located just a few blocks away from the square in the direction of Watertown. Entering the Park and tying it to the fence that separates it from the Ice skating somewhere closest to Mount Auburn Street by 6 on Christmas eve. The Caroling will take place some time between 10:00 and 11:15 PM!

On the evenings of DECEMBER 26th and DECEMBER 29th in the ISLAND OF MANHATTAN or IMMEDIATE vicinity (within only a few subway stops out), one might lure the aforementioned saw, by drawing a simple picture in the shape of an animal and cutting it out. Attaching to it a string. Writing on it’s back your address (and simple directions), AND WHICH OF THE TWO DATES YOU PREFER; and entering CENTRAL PARK at west 79th St, following the entrance road in, and crossing over to the other side of the Central Park Avenue. Finding there in front of you a path leading to and around a circle of ivey, foliage, and bushes and on to an outcropping in the lake. Not entering but finding BESIDE THE MOUTH OF THIS PATH (to the left), just off of the avenue, a sign post with the name HERNSHEAD upon it, and tying your animal to it. Do so by 4 o’clock one day prior to the date you’ve selected. Caroling will take place some time between 6 and 9 in the evening. If you do not live in the City but will be visiting, write such on back of your animal and the Carolers shall meet you at the HERNSHEAD signpost NEAR 6PM on the selected day.

ON ALL LISTED DATES:
Julian’s saw will accept (non compulsory) donations of hot chocolate which he will drink on it’s behalf.

Thank you.

Maybe if it were spelled ArkanSAW... Man, I've never even been to New England, lucky blokes. Chicago is the third biggest city in the country, isn't it? Why do people treat it like it's the 6th?

Because all the new england cities join together like transformers to make one gigantic optimus-prime robot that makes it really easy to hit alot of urban centers in a small amount of geographic space, where as Chicago, though large, is pretty much all illinois has going for it, besides Sufjan, and is no sort of transformer at all.

I really hope the new album comes with a nice tour. I live in Gerogia and I'm afraid I'll never get to see Julian without driving a very long way, which I am not yet old enough to do.

Ahhh, this looks awesome! I certainly hope to make one of the central park carolings. Serriously, if you are in the northeast, go! When I saw Julian this past spring, it was amazing. What a Christmas gift this is!

This reminds me of something my family does. My brother is currently living in New Zealand, but before he leaves he is going to bury something for me somewhere near Wellington. If and when I ever make it to New Zealand, I'll have to go dig it up to find out what he buried.

He once tried to hide a tube of toothpaste for me in the boys restroom in the Times Square Toy's R Us. I showed up 3 days later and it was gone, he didn't use the best tape to secure it under the sink.

I was in Chicago a week ago and hid some Lip Smackers chapstick and a Santa salt shaker in two different locations near downtown. I hope they're still there when my sister is there for new years.

Same here, there's no way I could make any of these, but I'm just overwhelmed with joy that there is some movement in the Music Tapes camp.

Unless you're talking about the country of Georgia, I think he's pretty much guaranteed to go through Athens if he does any kind of real tour.

You could make a nice mini-tour out of Madison, WI, Chicago, IL Bloomington, IN, Champaign, IL, and St. Louis, MO, in that order, without ever driving more than 3-4 hours from one city to the next. That's not too shabby.

So today I went to the First Old Church in Bennington, Vermont. At 3:49 I tied a cut out pig with my note on the back to the white fence right next to the entrance to the graveyard. Unfortunately, nobody came. When I went back to the church, my note was untouched. I'm sure he has a good excuse….but does anyone have an explanation? I was kind of sad afterwards…. :(

damn that sucks.

did anyone see him tonight? or even wednesday?

this may sound farfetched, but for the people living in NY; does anyone have a house/apartment that a few fans could meet at so that we could ensure the chance to see him. If we all wrote down that address we would have such a better chance for him to come. IDK if anyone is willing to have strangers at their house, but I think this idea could work.

so for the NY one, is Julian just going around to people's houses or are like people joining him in caroling? Cause I don't live in the city but I live close and I plan on being down there that day anyways and I'd love to partake somehow.

If there is a badger with doubts traveling with mr. koster and they wish to take their caroling further south and into the new year, there's a house in philadelphia that's aching for some caroling!

[I have been asked to deliver the following missive to those who were frustrated in their efforts to be caroled by a Music Tape. --Jeff/Optical Atlas]

TO A PAPER PIG:

I am afraid I somehow missed you as you hung
suspended in the wind on a cold winter's night. In
fact, I believe I saw you withdrawing into the
darkness in a flood of headlights and sound. Perhaps
you saw a Tophat in the distance? Caroling was to
last until eight that night, and being such a small
sleepy town, how many paper animals could it have
harbored? I was expecting a restful night with few
stops, and did not begin my walk past the Harpo Marx
mansion and Old Orphanage until nearly six. I never
imagined that a paper animal would be leaving
even as i approached.

I'm sorry that you fluttered so bravely in vain.

I invite you to do this:

Slip snugly into an envelope with a proper return
address and have yourself mailed to an island in the
ocean (the identity of which can be revealed to you by
Optical Jeff via E mail) so that we might yet meet.
Once you arrive, my Singing Saw and I will send your
human friend a compensatory package.

OR,

you might include with yourself SIX PINE NEEDLES, and
have your human friend receive instead a Promissory
Note for Future Caroling, during which a paper pig
might relive Christmas Eve eve in the manner in which
it should originally have unfolded.

TO THOSE WHO SOUGHT ME IN CENTRAL PARK:

Ah, I am again sad to have heard this! You see, these
Carols were designed for doorsteps. Those animals
who's
doorsteps were too far, were to have a request for
meeting in Central Park written on their back. None of
the paper animals did; So I did not visit central park,
but went directly on to Caroling, as Manhattan
contains SO many paper animals, and time indeed was
short! I'm so sorry to have missed you. On behalf of
Fate and the frailty of human endeavor, I apologize,
and hope that if you could not be a part of THIS
adventure, that you will be a part of one in the
future, as I'm sure both my saw and I would love to
sing to you.

Thank you for trying. It means a lot to me that you
did.

Julian

balls. so i don't get anything for missing central park?

i thought the instructions said that we meet at 6 with the animal. meaning, that we didn't need to have it up the day prior. i hate to say that mr. koster may be a little at fault here.

oh well, next time i will trip across the united states... again.
