View Full Version : ebay snipers
has anyone ever had a bid experience with an ebay sniper? i was watching this LP for a few days, made a bid last night before i went to bed, and watched it until the last 24 seconds this morning. i kind of got distracted and forgot to refresh the screen in the last seconds, and when i finally remembered to, i had been outbid with NINE SECONDS LEFT. needless to say, i was pissed as hell. i wanted to rip the dude's face off. i checked his profile and he had sniped EVERY ITEM he's bought in the last few seconds, even ones without any bids on them. what a dick.
i was lucky tho, and found another copy of the record STILL IN ITS SHRINKWRAP on ebay for a cheaper price, and it was a buy-it-now! thanks sniper!
i think there should be a rule that if you haven't already made a bid, you are barred from bidding in the last 10 minutes.

people who don't snipe shouldn't be allowed to bid. they just needlessly drive up the price.

i kind of agree with bprend, i don't bid on items till its close to over so i'm not jacking up the price. though its crappy when you do lose something like that.
yeah, i snipe every now and then, but this guy snipes every item he buys. sniping can also screw you over if someone put in a high maximum bid. i was also mad because i'd been watching the item all week only to lose to a guy named dangerouscuddler! what a loser!

i hate when that happens. somebody tried to do that to me; the other day, last time i purchased a record on ebay. (gay parade!) lucky i was willing to pay a ridiculous price for it. though i ended up only paying 27$ for it with the bonus 7 inch. i cant wait. :D

ha ha, yeh that would piss me off too. i think there's a program out there that will do the sniping for you. not positive on this, but pretty sure.

I know the feeling, brah, I got outbid on this totally hot minidress in THE LAST 4 SECONDS by a user named sooperrmodel[sic], geez. Hopefully she won't pay though. Her recent feedback wasn't particularly good. I also hate when people start bidding on shit days before the auction ends, driving up the price.

Everyone is looking for a deal and sniping is the way to get it. But if you always put in your Maximum bid you won't be left out or disappointed by the last second snipe. And yes there is a free program out there that does it for you.
yeah, but i would be willing to pay 50 cents more than my maximum bid for the item. i guess this has just taught me to be more vigilant about snipers and SNIPE SNIPE NSIISEPE.

If it makes you feel any better snipers get sniped too, so sniping an item isn't a guarantee of getting it. My parents snipe all the time and they're always moaning at someone else outsniping them :D But the thing is even if someone snipes you and the price goes to 50 cents higher than your maximum bid there's no knowing whether the sniper's maximum bid was 50 cents higher than yours or $30 higher.
But how do you drive up other people's paying prices? Won't you risk outbidding them and having to cough up a lot of money you didn't really want? Or do you just not pay the seller? (which really sucks as sellers would still have to pay ebay).

Snipers don't get out-sniped, they put in the price they are willing to pay for the item and take it or leave it. Almost like the ebay price police on certain items. You don't get out-sniped you get out-bid.
And if you are willing to pay .50 more for the item, they it wasn't your maximum bid.
If a high bidder refused to pay you can go into a dispute and get your ebay fees refunded and leave negative feedback. Not that big of a deal.

the program is called e-snipe. It's great if you're not home or awake when the auction ends, it will put in your max bid for you , up to 1 second before the auction ends.

you have to choose a max price at some point, but i'm sure everyone would be willing to pay 50 cents more to win an item whether their their max bid was $1 or $1 million.

As a seller, I have mixed feelings about sniping. I wish people would bid early and bid often! Now I just put a starting bid of the absolute minimum I think an item is worth, and then even if someone doesn't bid till the last second, I at least get what it's worth.
A good strategy for outsmarting snipers is to add, like .63 to your max bid. Then you'll never wonder, oh, if only I'd had time to bid .50 higher! Of course, they do the same thing though.

sniping would be useless if people just put in their maximum bid the first time. if you outbid someone early, chances are they'll make more bids. if you wait until the last second, you'll be able to get it for less.
