anybody into daniel johnston? does anybody think he sounds like an 80's version of julian koster? well, his album hi, how are you anyways.

i've been a huge daniel fan for years. now that the doc. is out seems a lot of people are discovering him. hi, how are you? is good, but in my opinion his master work is yip jump music. here's my favorite albums in order:

yip jump music
hi how are you
fun ( the major label album...way underrated among his fans)
songs of pain/more songs of pain
retired boxer
1990
artistic vice
the last two albums are pretty decent ( rejected unknown and fear yourself) but they are a bit overproduced in my opinion and daniel gets a little lost in the mix.

check out any of those albums though, i'm sure you'll enjoy. and watch the doc. if you haven't already!

yip/jump is the greatest. and i'm almost as fascinated by his paintings as his songs.

I immediately fell in love the first time I heard Daniel Johnston. The first song I heard was "Walking the Cow" from HHAY, very reminiscent of Mr. Koster.

if you couldn't tell from my mood..... i'm a bit of a fan.

listened to continued story/hi how are you yesterday.

I think that "it's over" is just begging for a band to come along and dominate it.... talking huge guitars and booming drums.

fly eye is another of my favorites off the album.

that said, and I may be crucified by a lot of DJ fans, I think that I like the album "fun" the most. it is waaay more produced than anything else of DJ's, but it is just a great overall album. gibby haynes did some great production on it. i really dig the strings.

The introductory comp is a nice.... well... introduction, but I think it would be better to give a newcomer HHAY or yip/jump.

oh i love that album too, every song is really solid. but i actually believe it was paul leary from the butthole's that produced it.

has anyone heard the version of devil town that was on a commercial for the television show "friday night lights"? needless to say it was very raped. sad.

I got into DJ via Yo La Tengo's awesome cover of Speeding Motorcycle a few years ago. 'Fun' was the first album I got, it's still prob my favourite. Also every cover on the Discovered, Covered compilation is crap.

i agree. no one has been able, as far as i can tell, to bring what dj does to his songs. they all sound like they are trying too hard. Even -sorry to say- built to spill- and i like them.

Some kid is showing it this Sunday at my school. I've only seen a few pieces of his artwork, which I like very very much and a few songs which I liked a lot but don't remember what they are called.

Right now I am in an ambient, spacy dreamy post-punk place. Galaxie 500. They should have been on Pete and Pete. Where has this been all my life. Hiding, of course.

Perhaps I will be in a Daniel Johnston phase soon after seeing The Devil documentary. I dig the Music Tapes after all.

galaxie 500 is hands down one of the most underappreciated bands of all time. they are fucking phenomenal and it seems like a lot of bands that they influenced (a lot of e6 bands, imo) went on to make a bigger splash than they did, excuse the cliche. dean wareham is absolutely one of the best guitarists in the "genre." he shreds in a completely understated way that affects you in a way that few others do.

i have a live show of theirs that i wouldn't mind putting on sendspace if people are interested.

some of his songs are really good, but his drawings are really bad, for the most part it looks like a 2 year old's drawings of superheros.... oh well.

it's amazing how galaxie 500 can take the most basic of harmonic backbones and create the most beautiful music. that kind of talent is what sets apart the boys from the men to use a tired cliche. and yeah you described dean wareham's leads perfectly. he's one of the few guitarists for me who can lead forever and it's still interesting.

I realized that the live show is actually a release... I am sure you resourceful people can find it, but I don't want to put it on sendspace. it's called "copenhagen." great disc.

Danny and the Monsters (Daniel Johnston'snew band) are playing Dallas the same night as of Montreal.

Opening for Daniel is the Townhall's own Fishboy and HHBTM Popfest's Happy Bullets. Luckily Daniel is playing an early show, so I should be able to catch all the acts before heading across town to see Elekibass and of Montreal.

It's gonna be a fun night.
