So, Beck covered of Montreal at a show recently. I think it's only fair that of Montreal cover Beck on the next tour. I vote for something off of Midnite Vultures, perhaps Sexx Laws or Debra. :D
he played wraith, here is an mp3!

Sure, it's a rusty and probably hastily put together cover, but I could see it being pretty good with a little work.

How many bands could actually cover OM with success....especially in the new era? Beck is probably the best prospect anyway.......

I've never been able to get into Beck. I have just never found his music to be very interesting at all. Although some songs off of Odelay make me happy because they remind me of growing up in the 1990s listening to live 105 in the bay area.

TERRIBLE!!! Beck should stick to doing Beck....I'm sure it was done on a whim, but it does the original no justice whatsoever...
I agree with ryanlescure, I really like Odelay, but I never heard anything else he's done since that was close to that record...

Beck's new album is really terrific. Possibly better than Odelay. The CD comes with a DVD, and there is a video for every single song on the new record. Well worth $12. I've not been able to stop listening to it since it came out.
Beck seem to have lost it on a personal level, but he's never made a bad album, in my opinon. And Jack-ass is one my favourite songs, and nothing beats singing along to Debra when you're drunk.

i was a big one foot in the grave and mellow gold fan back in the old days....i work in a record store so i hear every new beck cd that comes out via promos, nothing has impressed me since mutations.

the new album has some interesting tracks on it. but i'll definitely agree he's lost it on a personal level.

Guero makes me happy, and his older albums are swell. Regarding this cover, I agree it sounds like it was sort of done on a whim but I was dissapointed. I thought if someone could really do an of montreal song, Beck could, but it just sounds like he did an extremely exact version poorly. No effort to make it his own, and i've never been fond of someone not altering a song a bit if they cover, providing of course they preserve the spirit of the song.

Actually I own At War with the Mystics on CD, sorry that you went through that assuming other wise.
I was being sarcastic, yes, but I didn’t mean it to be negative toward the band or even yourself. It was two in the morning in Chicago, I had just came back from a show and saw the post you made. I made my post on impulse not paying attention to who made the post. I never realized that you where close to a newbie and aren’t accustomed to my schizophrenic posting (although, since I changed my name from GrossDaddy57 I’ve been serious and sincere in about 92% of my posts.....including this one.) I’m not sure what exactly I was after with the post......I guess it is in that The Flaming lips are so huge right now. It was dumb, I knew I would regret it a little today....so I apologize again.
I’ll make it up to you.....send me a U2U with some OOP E6 stuff you are after and I’ll see if I have it, and if so, will send you a burn or files via internet. Or I could send OOP stuff outside the collective...ever hear of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci....for example?

commentalicious..
beck: i havent heard guero yet... uhm. yea. midnight vultures = worst album ever. of montreal pulled off the funk thing. beck failed hardcore. i like one foot in the grave, mellow gold, odelay, and sea change.
flaming lips: havent heard anything of theirs earlier then the soft bulletin. but i LOVE LOVE LOVE the soft bulletin and yoshimi battles in the pink robots. at war with the mystics is ass. i just dont like it. who knows. and they totally should cover a song by of montreal. but not that god damned outback song. i cant even listen to that song anymore without thinking about. but i think maybe old of montreal done up glamorously would be great. "sleeping in the beetle bug" perhaps?

how many times have you listened to Midnite Vultures and have you even made it the whole way through each of the songs?

Though I liked the Soft Bulletin at first, I must say that it and Yoshimi and this year's new one are to the Flaming Lips what Satanic Panic and on albums are to Of Montreal.

What I meant by that is those albums were the point where both of said bands really found a new sound and a new audience, and kind of lost me, despite doing what they were doing very very well.
Both bands' stage shows became even more dramatic and over-the-top than before, they became cartoon versions of themselves, got a widespread teenybopper audience, etc. I hate being one of those guys who says "I liked their old stuff better" or feels jealous when a band I like gets adopted by a new audience, but I just feel let down by Of Montreal.
I am happy for them and their success, and I am glad they can bring such joy to the (relative) masses. It's just not the same for me, and the last times I saw them, I felt like a creepy old guy (and I'm just 24). Plus the oldest song was "Old People in the Cemetary" :)
Long story short, I as a longtime Lips fan and once rabid collector didn't bother to buy their newest album and I probably won't get the new Of Montreal album when it comes out either. That being said I watched a video of their 2000 Kindercore Expo performance the other night and felt kind of sad. I love so much of their music and don't want to sound like I'm talking shit. I should just stop typing, as I don't know what the point of this is.
But if anybody has a copy of the original Cherry Peel, please U2U me.

midnight vultures, while not quite as consistently amazing as some of beck's other albums, is imo really really great. some of his best songs are on there and he takes on personalities that are fairly unique to that album. i think it's also aged pretty well.

i wasn't crazy about it at first, but it's just such fun.
as fun as the lyrics are, the music/beats/arrangements are still top notch. there's some crazy stuff going on there.
i think it's definitely underrated.
