View Full Version : a heavily e6/nmh influenced musical project...

i'm really not one to brag, or self promote or anything, but i figure that if anyone would appreciate my latest solo recording project, it would be people obsessed with the same kind of music that i'm obsessed with. submitted for the approval of the midnight society:

sensational sam & the seasonal spookestra (http://www.myspace.com/thespookestra)

just a 20 year old boy in his room with a cheap mic and garageband... and every instrument i could find in dusty closets and thrift stores and the kitchen. it's instrumental, but like i said, very much influenced by nmh. it's a 4 part, story based concept album of sorts with halloween in mind, but fun year round i think.

anyway, first real larger-than-super-minimal solo recording effort and i'm proud of it like i'm it's momma. let me know what you think, kids. i had so much fun with this that i think i'm going to try a spooky christmas project!! hurray!

thanks guys, that's all good to hear.

it's actually not a 7inch... it's a cd. i found blank cdr's that look like little vinyl, with ridges and everything. but i made them to try to look like little vinyls, so...thanks! haha

bloody record covers are bad ass, i really like the minimal art on that last picture.

wow i suppose i could ship it to the uk! that's neat. i only made 50 because they're all handmade and stuff, and i think i only have like 5 or 6 left.... but i'll find out about the shipping and whatever and get back to you (if you still want it, that is... it's not a 7inch it's a cd... but a beautiful handmade one!)

thanks again for the kind words dudes, and to whoever said they'd heard it before: pppfffttt! haha, that's ok. a man from Russia heard it today and he said it was great, and sounded very much like the traditional music he heard when he was a boy. that was a great compliment

11-13-2006, 12:43 AM
aqualad, yeah i tried to say i wasn't bitter about it being called a bit unoriginal with that "guy-from-russia-said-it-was-convincingly-traditional comment.

yeah... laguna beach!... we actually have a pretty solid music scene (mostly garage/surf/punk, i guess) coming out of this town, just me and a bunch of friends, but that surprises a lot of people. that TV show sucks, and no, we don't all live like that.

stormx... how about we say 6 bucks via paypal and i'll ship one out? i'm not looking to make money, so i think that's a good deal with all the shipping and stuff, right? hold up for a bit though, because i have to get the few remaining copies back from a local record store. i'll let you know, if that sounds good.

Hey, this is good!
I think I'd like to buy a copy as well if there still are any left... I live in Sweden, but I think it should cost about the same as it would to UK. U2U me your email and I'll send you money, if you still have copies left that is :D

Wow what a great looking CD! What brand is it? I've seen black CDs printed to look like vinyl but not ones that look that good and realistic!

As for the music, MySpace refuses to play sound for me so I can't comment :(

I'd say you should buy another box of those faux-vinyls.

I'm looking to get one, too. Post or send details on how to paypal you. I'm in Florida.

gymp
11-13-2006, 10:35 AM
for us spreading them in the us, just send them to one person, and have them send it to others. much much cheaper.

edit: somehow i got the impression you were in the uk. so none of the stuff above is relivant but ill leave it anyway.

gymp: huh?

i forget the brand of the cdrs... it might have been memorex or e3. the middle of the disk originally had the logo and a bunch of other text, but i bought circular orange stickers and covered that up, and then painted/drew the artwork. i love vinyl but it's pretty expensive to press, so i put a lot of work into making these look like little vinyl records. if you listen to the recording carefully in the beginning, you can hear the needle being placed on the "record"... and at the very end it does that click...click...click... sound that records make when the needle gets to the middle, then you can hear me picking up the needle and turning the record player off. cheesy: maybe. oh well.

i'll let you guys know when i pick up the last remaining copies from the record store (likely tomorrow).... but we'll say 6 bucks overseas and 4-5 bucks elsewhere in the u.s.?? i'll post my paypal info once i actually have the cds to send out.

it really wasn't my intention to sell any more of these, just to share, but you guys are great for being interested!!

Cool stuff!

tralala
11-15-2006, 03:59 PM
alright, so i just got the last few back from the record store...

stormx, gymp, plastic hero and syst (i feel silly for referring to you with user names, but hey, i don't know your real ones yet!).... let's do business. if you could send me your mailing address's to mcronin@lclark.edu as soon as you can, that'd be awesome. that's the same email address as the paypal account too so... stormx and plastic hero, let's say $6... and dudes in the us, lets say $5. sound good? just trying to break even, but if that's a problem let me know.

those, plus two others that people are ordering via myspace, and the spookestra is no more. sold out.

and just fyi for anyone else... i think that once the CD's are all gone, i'm going to put the whole thing up and downloadable on that same Myspace page. if any of you guys who wanted to buy one would rather just download it, let me know... but it's a cool handmade record to physically own and the tracks flow seamlessly into each other and all that.

ALSO, i have 5 or 6 packaging left... like the cover art in plastic, but no mini vinyl. if you wanted to just pay the little bit of shipping cost (probably about 2 bucks in the US), i could send you a burnt CD in the package. not as fancy, but throwing that out there.

ok. super long post, but i think that's all business attended too. thanks for the all the interest, all i want with these musical projects is for somebody to appreciate it!

one more thing... a one time only self promotion purge for anyone who's interested and/or desperately bored. if not, please skip this one. just thought i'd throw it out there once because apparently you're supposed to promote your bands.
some other bands i'm involved in:
charlie & the moonhearts (http://www.myspace.com/charlieandthemoonhearts) garage/surf punk... i "sing" and play bass and write the music and all that. i like this band
pony soldier (http://www.myspace.com/ponysoldiermusic) silly blippy bloopy synth pop. there's an April 1st NMH cover on there... and the first song is a Walkmen cover i just put up yesterday
mr. sunshine & the family band (http://www.myspace.com/mrsunshineandthefamilyband) adorable acoustic pop! i play everything on that demo but have beautiful bandmates with which i usually play guitar or accordion... that recording is terrible but good new stuff to come.
party fowl (http://www.myspace.com/thisispartyfowl) um... noise rock surf party band? i joined a bit ago, and due to complications with other members i've played bass, sax and drums in 3 separate shows. you'll probably hate this music; my dad sure does
joe lebon & the kool kids klub (http://www.myspace.com/joelebonandthekkk) experimental acoustic noise band anyone? kind of fcked up, you'll probably hate this one too... just me and whatever noisemakers i can find.
goatherder (http://www.myspace.com/goatherdermusic) metal band. i play drums or bass depending on who's in town

there's some other bands but i'll stop there because i already feel like an @$$. kisses!

thanks tomatoessss! i wasn't really going for that specifically... i just kinda did it without knowing i was going to do it till i did it.

i love that song... sometimes the most simple songs are the most fun. i'm re-recording it right now, and just wait... i'm adding a whole bunch of trumpets and trombones to the mix (i'm teaching myself how to play listening to NMH records!).

www.myspace.com/joelebonandthekkk and just recorded a new song for this band, because i should have been studying so i was angry so i made noise music.

by the way, do i need to be "jumped-in" to this e6 forum? like, beat-up-by-a-gang jumped-in? because i'm new here, and i'm ready for some punches in the gut.

the paper orchestra! that's wonderful stuff!! i'll definitely try to come to your show (i'm not just saying that either)... i like the plush cafe a lot, have only been there once to see my friends play a show but it was a good time. if i ever get the mr. sunshine & the family band folk project going strong enough to play a live show in front of an actual audience, i think we'd mesh well together. i'm not too sure my other bands would attract the same audience... we're kind of..really, really loud :) i just got done with a long long string of shows between a few different, like 6 or 7 over the same number of weeks, mostly in the OC area (some in LA)...

that's very nice to hear... i'm kind of obsessed with a hawk and a hacksaw.

i only just started playing the accordion a few months ago though... mines all beat to crap and have glued to the front the initials "SJL" in those big metal mailbox letters (saint john lennon? i'm hoping that's it). it also has decals on the case that say "A.A.S.C. I competed in the Western States Accordion Festival 1966", another that says '67....... and little decals above both of those those that say "Western States Accordion Festival Winner". neat, huh?

i have a few questions, first, what is Pt. 1????? ????? i guess only one question. Pt. 2 and 4 are real good and i have to say the Pt. 3 is fucking incredible and the pakaging is real cool too.
also, would you mind if i kinda spread this around a bit?

tralala
11-27-2006, 10:11 PM
thanks! i'm glad you got it in one piece. my intention of pt1 was to introduce the (very much circular) story with a dream sequence [notice the music box in the beginning (and listen for it in pt4. i always wonder if anyone caught that)... and the alarm at the end]. although i definitely wrote this as a score to the story in my head, it's all open to interpretation of course.

and yes, spread it around all you want! the beauty of cd's is the ease of sharing

i hope the others arrive ok... i sent them all at once

...i think, now that all the hard copy albums are gone, that i'm going to put the project in it's entirety up on the myspace site
www.myspace.com/thespookestra ... so you can check back there. or that oink site up there

as for people who bought them; don't feel screwed because it's now available to download for free. i put a lot of time into making those neat little hard copies, which are always infinitely better than any downloaded files. but for everyone else, take a look (a listen), let me know if you like it.

oo! and i bought an old mandolin a few days ago and wrote a kinda cutesy song with the first few chords i learned:

yeah i do happen to have one copy that my friend, whom was only borrowing it, will return to me in the mornin'.

nerve-wracking, though. it's kind of like sending a fingerpainting to andy warhol. or an acoustic guitar song to jeff mangum. or... something else like that... he probably just wants a physical copy so he has something he can literally sh*t upon.
