This seems to be a really tired subject, but I think its interesting that Kevin has in the not too distant past changed his explanation of the origin of their name.

Exhibit A:

Y'all: Odd name... where did it come from?
Kevin: I met this girl when I was in Florida. She lived in Montreal and she was down in Florida visiting. I met her one night by chance and I really fell for her. She went back to Montreal and I moved to Minneapolis. We were having this literary love affair. I was really really into her. I went to Montreal to see her and for some reason it didn't work out and it was really crushing. Everything I did after that point would be from that experience so it was "of Montreal."

Y'all: So that inspired you to form the band?
Kevin: Mostly, yeah... songwriting... just from that experience. It just woke me up. I was in this daze... not really feeling anything. Once she broke my heart it was almost like it opened up something inside of me that I could feel a lot deeper in a lot of ways like getting into movies, books and songs. It was really a wonderful thing but very sad, too.

I heard him say pretty recently that their name came from Dottie going to Montreal once or something dumb like that. I wonder if Kevin just got tired of thinking of his past romance and decided to just start saying something else.

No joke, after ten years of getting asked about their name in 80% of their interviews, I'd have a little fun when asked about it myself.

The funniest made-up explanation might be at DIY Rockstar.

How did the name Of Montreal come about?

There was this, this woman that I knew when I was younger, because my Mom used to own this restaurant and I used to always go over there after school and hang out. And one of the women that worked there was sort of like a second mother to me. Well, she was really cool and she had this tattoo on her leg that said “Of Montreal”. So, I remember just looking at it, and it seemed sort of strange that she would have that on her ankle. So, when I started the band, I wanted to kind of give a little nod to her because she was pretty important to me in my upbringing.

Is it safe to assume that his first explanation is the correct one?

I'm sure it's also in large part an act of releasing the karma attached to the name of the band. It served for a while to connect his main artistic endeavor to this seminal life event, but now that's done, and though the name is the same, it doesn't mean the same thing anymore.

They once stated in an interview that Dottie, who loves joining new religions, met this guy on a trip who had this cult/religion. Dottie was real into the idea and when she got into the cult the leader had everyone get of montreal tattood on their wrist I believe? Dottie grew out of the religion and left, and to "take the name back" the band decided to call themselves Of Montreal.
THis story was told on one of their ifilm interview and I found it quite amusing
