I'm going to buy it when it comes out but I sure would like to hear it now....

eh? eh?

Nah, I guess I'll just keep my ear to the ground or wait for it to fall into my lap.

I would like to hear how the contributions from other Elephant Sixers have shaped up. Including those from Jeff.

hi everybody--

of course the apples would prefer if our album were not available before the release date, for many reasons, and we wish it had not been leaked--

still, as many promotional copies have been sent out for advance publicity by yep roc / simian records, it seemed inevitable that one would wind up on the internet, and this is out of our control as it is unrealistic to expect every single journalist, blogger, record store employee, intern, etc. to adhere to the highest standards of professional integrity or whatever--

the very deluxe double vinyl will be available by direct order from yep roc in time for christmas, it is being pressed right now, which is not too far away and of course we are all excited for people to hear it so anyway--

if you feel comfortable downloading bootleg albums then i hope that you will buy the record on the release date as the artwork and poster (by artist andrew mclaughlin) are integral to the feeling of the record-- either way you guys must feel free to talk about whatever you want okay?

i am super proud of this record, and satisfied-- i hope you enjoy it, when you do hear it!

sincerely,
robert schneider

This feeling good makes you think you are understanding. Your mind is one big euphoric high and ultimately that is what meaning is. words act like place holders for energy. We know to stop when we see something there. They dont say anything, we just begin to associate them with what ever state our mind is currently in.

that is that. so next time we discuss meaning. Take this in mind.

way to waste nearly a full page with your bickering, guys.

getting back on topic, if the album is anything like schneider has described (fun trick noisemaker-esque production!) i'm sure i'll enjoy it.

i'd feel a little weird hearing it before i actually own a copy and can look at the album art and the booklet and such, so i'll wait until february (ugh, such a long time!) but i'm sure listening to live shows and whatnot will hold me over until then.

but for those of you who are going to listen to it in advance, i'm sure plenty of us wouldn't mind hearing some feedback!

People Keep talking about wasting pages like the internet is made of paper.

Birdman's thoughts were insightful, if not a tad on the discouraging side.

I always enjoy a good Harnk/H.H. fight until I realize they have twice the maturity of my diction with half the maturity of my person.

New magnetic wonder is excellent, Can't wait to buy it. It's incredibly dynamic with such a broad pallette of different stylings and sounds, sometimes it sounded like classic apples, and other times it was something completely new. Get this album!

i just finished listening to it, and it's pretty fantastic. not my favorite apples album, but damn, it's good.

"open eyes" is still my favorite song from the album. i loved it when i heard it live and the studio version didn't fail to deliver.

robert wasn't kidding when he cited E.L.O. as an influence on the album. a good chunk of the material on the album reminds me of marbles' expo, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. my only real problem with the album the first time through was that maybe the synth vocal harmonies were a little too prominent all over the songs, but honestly, that's the least i could have been disatisfied with.

it seems like it'll take a few listens just to be able to absorb everything. this is the longest of all of the apples' studio records at just under an hour, which is twice as long as, say, the discovery of a world inside the moone.

the album is really heavily produced and there's so much going on but it all remains cohesive somehow. "skyway" is every bit as pulse-thumping as it would be if you were to hear it front row at a concert (with the additional pleasure of being able to hear all of the instruments clearly). hilarie's "sunndal song" is simply magnificent. again, there's so much packed into just one song... haunting, distorted piano, pavement-esque guitar solos... it's both oddly haunting and completely danceable. what a crazy pair!

the album is full of triumphs for the band. songs like "7 stars" carry across the same themes that schneider has been writing in his lyrics for years, but packs an extra punch thanks to some memorable sound production. and "beautiful machine parts 3-4" is easily the most simultaneously uplifting and heart-wrenching thing i've heard in quite some time.

the link tracks aren't too overbearing or obtrusive, which i know was a complaint with her wallpaper reverie. some of them are even pretty catchy, despite their length. there's a good amount of diversity between them. "mellotron 2", for example, is this really neat, 1930sish downbeat jazz guitar piece -- the sort of thing django reinhardt would dream about after drinking all night. "vocoder ba ba" sounds like it came straight out of a katamari damacy soundtrack.

the "non-pythagorean" compositions are interesting, but i'll have to wait until i get the CD with all the computery goodies to get a hold on them.

new magnetic wonder. the word "new" in the title is something to stress. this is a band that's almost 15 years old and can still sound fresh and make you feel the same way you did when you heard, say, "love you alice/d" or "benefits of lying" the first time. if nothing else, the album makes me excited for the next one (which i hope doesn't take longer than five years to cook up!) when i first heard velocity of sound, it seemed to me like the band was saying goodbye, that they'd covered all the ground they could. as good as new magnetic wonder is, it feels like the band is just getting started. there's a limitless amount of potential for the future of the apples in stereo.

turn up the stereo, indeed.

so far, the only complaint is how muffled the drums are. i think that's mainly what's bugging me. other than that, each time i listen(to the few songs i've heard) i like each song more and more. some of those little instrumental things i wish were longer and songs in their own right. especially mellotron 1. it makes me think of old soundtracks and jazz. together. at last. not that it is either of those...

this album is growing on me with each listen. I agree that the vocoder use seems a little overbearing, an inside joke taken too far maybe. but that complaint is really prett inconsequential. I think that skyway and sundaal are absolutely phenomenal, easily ranking with the best stuff the apples have ever done, imo. even the songs I don't like that much, i still dig. I want to HATE energy because it is really cheesy, but it is catchy as hell. I think that this might be hilarie's strongest album by a long shot. john hill is the unsung hero of this band though... I can not get enough of his hooks and leads. I had the good fortune of catching him with dressy bessy a couple weeks ago and the guy is just off the hook. he shines in almost every song. as someone previously mentioned, open eyes is pretty epic, as is the second half of beautiful machine III-IV

congratulations to the band for another great album. hope to catch you in denver some time soon.

Congrads rob, it's been over 10 years in the making, but you and the rest of the gang have finally put together an album that tops the legendary fun trick noisemaker. You've captured an incredible upbeat indie rock sound here that i've been humming for weeks. I'm glad you're proud of this record, you should be. The mere concept of jeff mangum's presence will attract a large number of new fans to this album, and even though his influence is not obvious, that element will only turn on more people to your music.

I'ma agree with songles here... Although there really were some standout tracks on New Magnetic Wonder... it seemed the rest was kinda... i dunno... not as poppy. I mean it depends how you define pop, but it didn't make me want to sing and dance like the pre-velocity of sound albums did.

Maybe we should run a poll :)

of course the apples would prefer if our album were not available before the release date, for many reasons, and we wish it had not been leaked--

still, as many promotional copies have been sent out for advance publicity by yep roc / simian records, it seemed inevitable that one would wind up on the internet, and this is out of our control as it is unrealistic to expect every single journalist, blogger, record store employee, intern, etc. to adhere to the highest standards of professional integrity or whatever--

the very deluxe double vinyl will be available by direct order from yep roc in time for christmas, it is being pressed right now, which is not too far away and of course we are all excited for people to hear it so anyway--

if you feel comfortable downloading bootleg albums then i hope that you will buy the record on the release date as the artwork and poster (by artist andrew mclaughlin) are integral to the feeling of the record-- either way you guys must feel free to talk about whatever you want okay?

i am super proud of this record, and satisfied-- i hope you enjoy it, when you do hear it!

sincerely,

(the apples)

I like Robert's approach to the whole thing... I can't even imagine how much money a label would have to spend or how many journalists it would have to alienate to keep a record from leaking on the internet prior to its release date. I have mp3s of both the AIS and new OM records and both are fantastic... the OM especially, but the I like the first half of the AIS record just as well. "Energy" is an instant classic. And even though I have both I will still be buying any cd and/or vinyl combo when they are "official" - mostly for the uncompressed "real" record but also to support the e6 bands. I make records at home myself (http://www.myspace.com/nationalsteel) and New Magnetic Wonder is an unbelievable record. Great job Robert!!! BTW, you're my biggest production inspiration next to BW. Anyone who can make ITAOTS, TSE, and Discovery of a World is ridiculous!!

I ordered the superfan pack, but I'm listening to the advance now, and...

HOLY SHIT.

I'm only halfway through it and I'm pretty sure this is the best Apples album ever. And that's not a claim I usually make in haste.

Simply amazing. Well done to Señor Roberto & The Apples.

Yes, I downloaded the advance too. But I'm waiting patiently for the vinyl to arrive. I don't like Christmas to come early, especially when I'm getting the vinyl so far in advance already. But I have the advance waiting to be put on my iPod.

I've now been able to give this album proper attention rather than my previous brief listenings..

New Magnetic Wonder is the most satisfying album I've heard since In The Aeroplane Over the Sea with almost as many musical complexities as Black Foliage, without getting in the way of that clean Apple's Sound. It will put a smile on your face after a lousy day and will make you want to be a better person on a good day. It's great travel, lounging, doing the dishes, party, anything music.

Are you kidding me??

C'mon man. It's a neat little pop album, but as complex as Black Foliage. Grown some ears, Partner.

Got my vinyl today (I'm in MN)! It came with some stickers, a few samplers, and a small poster signed by 3 of the band members.

I was simply trying to say it's a little more intricate than their other albums but i did use a bit of hyperbole. I didn't really think anyone aquainted with OTC would take what i said quite so literally, and yet there you have it, a man who writes short stories about urinating in coffee mugs telling me to "grown some ears"

It landed in TX today. Check out the Elephant 6 logo on the back of the record. When was the last time this was on an official release?

Sorry, Bub, don't rely on people to read between your electric lines.

And I know you enjoyed the Dirty Deeds story, so spare me the sarcasm.

I held off on listening to the leak, and I'm glad I did, because the Super Fan Pack gives you the full experience. I was skeptical about the artwork, but when you get the double-gatefold vinyl with the little poster inside...it's beautiful, and it makes you smile.

The album itself is a big tribute to Elephant 6--like lou2ser said, note that the logo makes its first return in 6 years (6 years? Oooh...eerie), and that the collective gets a shout-out in the liner notes, both as a whole and (pretty much) individually, band by band.

I disagree with Harnk in that he calls this a neat little pop album, and there's nothing "little" about it. It's certainly the most complex album AIS have put out.

Well, to me it seems like a collection of little pop songs, not at all cohesive, but when taken in small doses, or even sections, can be rather nice. I put this behind Her Wallpaper Reverie (my fave) in the ranks of AIS albums. All of which, for me that is, sit under Pyramid Landing (speaking in the world of Robert Schneider).

I thought sprinkles was going to be a commentary on how anyone can pass off their work of as art these days, (pissing in a cup and calling it a poem) and got real exicted and thought it was a neat way to express such a sentiment But it ended up being far more literal and even ended in an odd little bush joke. Your writing style did hold my attention though.

Received it today too. I'm happy it arrived the same day as you, here in Europe.
And it's probably my favourite Apples record.

Did anyone catch the album dedication to Syd?

I also waited patiently for a released copy over the leaked version, and I need a few listens to really let the album sink in. Still, "Sun is Out" caught my attention the most.
