View Full Version : Let's settle the score. (best album)

I dont know about this Hissing Fauna business being the best album, but I'm finally starting to be able to listen to it with half a smile. I think here we should talk about The best albums and why they may be considered the best. Lets make sure we get lots of info and try to settle the score, eh?
*My personal favorite is "the bedside drama; a petite trategy" but I still have other opinions on what album could be the best.
*"Cherry Peel" is probably has the most friendly buzz I've seen in my personal experiences. Every one likes that album and its very listenable for just about everyone, with that very soft 60's feel.
However.
*For alot of people, it seems "Satanic Panic in the Attic" is up there. Mostly because its seems like its the big start of their transition tyo being this indie-electro type of a band, but still has that awesome guitar pop writing essence that of Montreal has. The songs are good musically and the melodies fucking rule (and still catchy). I still dont think this is the best album still has alot of songs I wouldnt listen too.
What I think it comes down to is "The Gay Parade" and "Coquelicot asleep in the poppies"! Both albums have great stories and characters. Genius songs. Thing is Coquelicot is full of fillers and such a long album thats hard for some people to stay caught in (the endless feeling piano track does give it some bonus points). And it has too much of a Beach Boys-Pet sounds and The Beatles- Magical Mystery Tour(esque) feel to it. Now "The Gay Parade" Has the same aspects. But!!!! The Gay Parade is not only well written but the album is short but long enough to keep you interested, Almost every song is great everything is connected. The Intro song is amazing and it outros to the same music.
So with that being said I nominate "The Gay Parade"
(sorry if I have bad writing errors)
feedback with your own opinions.

I really like aldhil's arboretum a lot..Satanic Panic (especially the trio of Lysergic Bliss, Will You Come and Fetch Me and My British Tour Diary on Satanic) is just great writing and of course eroneous escape is probably one of my favorite songs by them in general. Gay Parade is pretty kick ass as well!!

Coquelicot is my personal fav, with Bird Who Continues... in a close second (mostly for personal connection reasons).
But for the best overall balance of listenability and creativity, you just can't beat Gay Parade.

Oh, and Aldhil's is the most under-rated.

Yeah I should have made a section for "aldhills"...even though I feel the writing isnt as great as i thought it could have been when you look at the albums written near its time. I feel like a jerk and I shouldnt be saying things like that its just the same feeling I get when I listen to "Big oil" and "sunlandic twins". Though I like all those albums for other reasons.

my favorite is cherry peel, and then the early four track recordings. I really like the early releases because they have so much character (this is not to say that the later releases don't), i can just imagine kevin being as excited about writing music on a four track then getting together with some friends and jamming, much like many of us do.

I think the reason Aldhil's gets a bad rap is because it was the first album they did that wasn't like the others before it in the sense of subject matter..some of it's pretty "dark" in comparison to Gay parade and Coquelicot.

I dont trust anyone who puts Hissing Fauna first. Its good, but you dont know what kind of longevity itll have. You need to wait at least 1-2 years before you can accurately put it on a list.

harnk's list could have been mine, although I keep changing the order of the best three (mostly 1 gay parade 2 hissing fauna 3 satanic panic) and harnk doesn't mention horse and elephant eatery, which i would put between sunlandic and rabbit flower.
fact is all their albums are marvellous and how much bands with that many albums can you say the same thing of?

At least were getting the idea know one likes 'Big Oil"...even though "big oil" rocks.
How can "early four track" and "bedside drama" be last in someones list.
Also I would include "Horse and elephant eatory" but im not sure if we should consider it as a regular part of the albums..its all gay parade b-sides and 7" tracks.
/////////also can we get some reasons why Hissing Fauna is the best album besides shitting in a canoes, which is not reasonable.

Aside from some obvious Prince influence, it still manges to stand alone in a scene that doesn't even exist. It's sharp yet lucid. Crisp yet warming. Sexy yet cold. It's a fucking a stonker, baby.

10-25-2006, 08:45 AM
The album itself and lyrically is anti-scene. But im pretty sure even besides the "Prince" and "Queen" sound, the funky eloctroness of its is decently familiar sounding.

I totally agree that Radiohead has lost the plot. The Bends was pretty good, but OK Computer was undoubtedly a perfect album.
Maybe it was because it was such a good album that everything after that just seemed really self-conscious to me. I think at this point they're more interested in topping themselves than they are in making music.

the only two radiohead albums i own are ok computer and kid a (probably the favorite of the two), i like the bends, but i've never went out of my way to own it (though over the course of several years i think i may have acquired the whole album on various mix tapes friends would make me). hail to thief in my opinion was VERY lackluster....just seemed like background music...not a single melody stuck with me after hearing it on multiple occasions. and that thom yorke solo cd....yeck!

I don't think it's possible to answer this question. I love the variety between the older and newer albums, and I have different favorites depending on what mood I'm in. I think it's wonderful when a band can change up their style and still make it amazing to listen to; it gets old when bands always stick to a certain style and I think it shows a lot of creativity and guts to experiment and to not just continue on with what has worked for them in the past. For those reasons, and many others, I can appreciate pretty much all of om's music. I think it's all brilliant and unique in different ways and I find it hard to see where people are coming from when they just seem to shake off the newer albums without giving them much of a chance. I know everyone has differing opinions and I'm not trying to question the validity of anyone's views, but personally I love seeing the different directions Kevin and the band have taken over the years.
