I was browsing at Tower Records yesterday and decided to pick up the Beulah DVD. I saw it last night and it blew my away. Tons of great footage on here, I'm surprised not more people have commented on this here.

It has been a while since I've seen it, but my brother bought it meaning I own it, in turn. I love Beulah as much as the next guy, but I wish I hadn't seen this DVD. Miles Kurosky comes off as a giant whining ass. Am I totally wrong and not connecting with the DVD properly?

I agree that Miles does do a lot of complaining; I mean, I work my ass off every day at being an animator and I have no recognition, and there are a lot other great bands out there that have much less recognition than Beulah does. But regardless, I think it all has to do with personality; and Miles defenitely likes expressing himself. Above all, the important thing is that they carried their passion for music and continued to put on great shows, as well as having a deep love for their fans. That's what I think.

I went to see Beulah at Trees in Dallas for their "Coast is Never Clear" tour. It was the same venue I had seen them the first time for Heartstrings. Miles was standing out front with a clipboard demanding that noone pay the price they were trying to charge. He said that they had agreed to a ticket price beforehand and that Trees basically upped the price at the last second. He stayed out there until right before they went onstage then got on the mic and talked some more shit about it. Needless to say they never played Trees again(I'm not sure if anyone else will either), but Miles gained some respect from me that day. He knew there was nothing he could do about it, but he could at least tell people.

Beulah shows were some of the most fun I've been to, mainly because of the respect of the fans and that they actually talked to the crowd and didn't just say the occasional "thanks."

oh and the music was pretty great too
must say that the beulah bootlegs i've heard (downloaded from e6.com) aren't very impressive compared to the original recordings of the songs... where they're live shows gimmick-y in any way? what was so fun about them?

no gimmicks, they just seemed like really nice people. I saw them 3 times in a year-span, when they were more or less my favorite group. They also picked some people to get on stage and play a maraca or tambourine or something, and two of the times I was close and Miles got me up there. You can't really compare a bootleged show to actually being there, it's two completely different experiences.

Also, on a lot of the bootlegs the sound is crappy. On the dvd they have a bonus feature of one of their live shows and the sound is great. It makes a huge difference.

i have the entire "A Good Band Is Easy To Kill" ripped at CD quality on my computer. It's one of my favorite albums. I would totally be down sending the MP3s if someone wants to host em
I met Miles once and he is like that in person too, .. you know but super talented and the DVD is cool just for the live footage as far as the extra stuff... ITs super BORING I thought! I think they tried to be WILCO "I'm trying to break your heart" but bringing a guy along with a shitty hand held camera and makeing PENIS jokes about the capital building, looking at porn, and making fun of everyone left and right I would say I didn't connect with it either.. But yes I own it, Grea live footage!

I got the dvd a few months ago and enjoyed watching it a couple of times. I shall probably play it again soon, I just haven't been in the mood..
One thing I'm surprised no one has brought up on here was Miles's slight diss of the Elephant 6 Recording Co. It's been a while since I've seen it, and I don't remember how harsh it was or wasn't, but it was basically him talking about how Beulah's sound continued to evolve compared to other bands who kept making music of a certain style to continue to please their very specific niche market.
It may have been buried in the bonus features, but what, no outrage?
Even if he's correct, I just thought it sounded like ungrateful hand-biting of sorts. I never would have heard of Beulah if it hadn't been for the E6 connection. I was initially put off by the snotty delivery in Miles's voice (which reminded me more of Third Eye Blind or Eve 6 than anything I would want in my record collection), but I thought that there must be something there besides the beautiful window dressing (my initial exposure being Heartstrings).. so I gave them the benefit of the doubt because of that little stamp of approval.
It is telling that there was some dissent within the core community about Beulah's debut being released on Rob's E6 imprint. One of the founding fathers referred to Beulah's music as "shite"....according to someone very very close to the core.
Maybe Miles knew of this mixed response and was snapping back in some way. Just making conversation, stirring up shite.
One of the more polarizing moments of the movie might have been when Bill Swan was pissed at someone in the van and angrily called him a "fagg0t."
Anyway, I liked the dvd. Twas good watchin'.

I really enjoyed the DVD. I thought the band were great. Really nice people, mostly. There's no denying Miles is a penis.
Yeah and No I love the band but they didn't progress all that much! They continued to make really great consistent pop records.. I never heard them make PET SOUNDS you know..
