View Full Version : Seeking Jeff Mangum to Save KLPI.

This probably sounds like a load of crock, but I assure you, I'm absolutely serious.

I'm a 2nd year engineering student going to Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA, and I work for its college rock radio station, KLPI 89.1 FM (http://www.891klpi.org). I'm a DJ and the current librarian, and the reason I'm writing this is because our station is in danger of losing our broadcasting license if we can't get our own transmitter up and running very soon (around November 2006).

The administration of Louisiana Tech, for whatever reason, does not think that KLPI reflects the voice of the students, even though we're a completely student run station, not to mention we survey the students every so often and change our programming to fit it. Yes, we still have DJs that try and keep the indie music coming, but for the most part, we try to appeal to a wider and wider student base as much as we can, because we're here for the students to listen to and enjoy.

That being said, we need every tool we can to try and help us present our case to the administration of Louisiana Tech. It would be extremely helpful to have contact with Jeff Mangum himself, who worked for KLPI for several years. I myself am an immense fan of his work with Neutral Milk Hotel, but right now, this is business.

If by November of 2006 we cannot convince the administration to purchase KLPI a radio transmitter, then KLPI will effectively cease to exist, and this is something I absolutely dread.

If I could somehow get in contact with Jeff Mangum, and if he could write a letter to the administration of Louisiana Tech helping explain how important a radio station really is to a college community, it would help our case out so very much. Anything from him would help, really, it doesn't necessarily have to be a letter.

If anyone knows how I could get in contact with him, it would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Agreed, it's a long shot. it's actually longer than a long shot, but I hope you find a way to save your radio station, don't give up on Jeff, but make sure you think of some other people to contact. Best of luck.

Yeah, I know it's a really long shot, this is just one of the main ideas I could come up with to help us solve this case. I was in debate for a couple years, hopefully that will help. Thanks for the luck wishes, everyone.

ummmm, go to the memberlist, seandavidson, thelatebphelium, kelly, derek, john, marbles, laura carter . are all people that you would want to ask inorder to get intouch with jeff/and/or people who can help you, u2u is a personal message to that person. go to memberlist and sort by status, though you will have to search for marbles (robert). click their profile and somewhere it will say u2u, click that to send them a message, also if it has their email, try that.

Why can't you buy/steal your own transmitter? You can't be that poor >.<

The idea of stealing a transmitter intrigues me. I have no use for it, but it should be a grand adventure nonetheless.

i was a dj there back in 89 and 90 before i was kicked out of school. do they still have the transmitter up on top of the library? me, my gf (will's on and off gf too) and the program manager had to go up there for some reason. it was a great excuse to get high on top of the building.

i did the "college music" show. a lot of the e6 guys were either dj's there or just hung out there. i recall vividly that jeff was there in a dark room listening to any new lp that came in. one of his jobs was to annotate on the album cover what songs had explicit lyrics. so, tourist, if you run across some lp covers that are written on and they're from that era, chances are, you're holding a rare artifact.

the whole klpi gang was esentially the same as the fun-o-mat gang. good times.

What happened to the transmitter? did you get a new one?

I know JM is a total god in the indie world, but why would a bunch of stuffy professors be that interested in the words of an ex student DJ? I'm not saying it isn't a good cause but aren't you barking up the wrong tree here if you need help that badly?

How much does a transmitter cost anyway? Or was your real plan to get a letter from Jeff and auction it to buy the transmitter. Was that it?

An even longer shot but how about a charity concert? Transmitter Aid or w/e. Get Jeff, the OTC, and the Apples to play. Hold it over the summer and make it an event. People would come from all around the world ("people will come, ray. people will come"?) to see a reunion show with the three main E6 bands playing. Maybe they don't really care any more but there is a shot they might all be willing to help out the station where they all got their start.

Yeah, I'm just dreaming, aren't i?

Transmitter Cost = $100,000. Get 5,000 people to pay $20 each and you have your $100,000. Get the bands to donate their time and local businesses/campus agencies to lend their support. 5,000 people would be easy to attract. If all three of those bands played, you get a number exponentially higher.

If only he were a Rentaghost all your transmitter problems would be over.

(Sorry, I think that might be a Brits only joke).

(Even a Brits over the age of ..ahem... 30 joke).

Maybe instead of throwing money at this problem it would be good to answer the question, "for whatever reason."

Why is it that this college is doing away with the student voice? If they don't want to deal with a student voice, raise money (considerably less) for a good pirate station, maybe. Just a thought.

ya, i'd say the only answer to your problem is switch schools. why not hold up your principle? force him to give you his pin number. make a mangum mask.

If you wore a Mangum mask, nobody would know (or believe) who it was. Also, I have my doubts about the quality of your maskmaking skills (whoever it is I'm talking about)

(another set of parantheses couldn't hurt)
