madeline meech and hans kercheek

A friend just wrote me saying that she loved the OM record I had given her but who was that transposing scores by Satie on the beak of an inimitable red-breasted lark? And what does that mean? I said, Hans Kercheek, and, Kevin made it up, but now I'm suddenly struck with paranoia that these are real people and everybody got the reference except me.

So (since this is probably not the case), could everyone please give me short biographies of these two people and why they ended up consoling stallions and transposing music on birds' beaks?
