Puh-leeeaaaase. I've seen Aeroplane at Media Play (when it was open), FYE, Best Buy, Virgin Megastores, Tower Records, and freaking Circuit City on multiple occasions. Heck, our local FYE is carrying a copy of the Everything Is EP!
I don't think seeing Aeroplane at a major retailer is something to freak out about though, especially since this kind of thing has been going on for so long now.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here, but what's the big deal. It's a album on a major indie label.

Last time I checked, there was no law saying that major chains couldn't sell albums. If this thread was originated by someone trumpeting their "indie-cred" I have one question:

If you're so cool, what the hell were you doing in BESTBUY!?!

New rule: you're banned if you bought it from a small independant music store.

merge is distributed by a company that's owned by a major. 'bout time you kids learned the real cogs behind the 'indie' machine! how do you think interpol bought such nice suits.

I wish you would stop referring to everyone here as "kids", it's extremely patronising since alot of the people here (including me) are older than you. No offence, but it really makes you sound like a tool.

But you're right, most "indie" labels have major label connections. There are still some labels like Dischord that are truely independant though.

faux indie is the correct term for most of the stuff out today that gets labelled indie.

ж
08-23-2006, 11:08 PM
are you talking about labels or indie in general? because faux-indies are fake indie labels set up by majors (e.g. strummer recs, record collection recs, a ton of '90s labels who i can't think of). labels like merge are actually independent but pimp their business out to distros with major label connections. there's a difference, but who cares.

clouds-chan

I always called those bands that were labelled and marketed toward the indie crowd but were connected to a major label as faux indie. I didn't realize it was meant for the fake indie labels themselves.

ж
08-23-2006, 11:14 PM
it means both, i would guess. they're one and the same.

ha god damn..chill homeslice! I'm not cool at all man ha, I was in best buy looking at video games cause I'm a dork! There I said it, ha. I don't give a shit who sells what, I just didn't think big companies like best buy would carry a neutral milk hotel cd. Apparently they do, along with other similiar retailers, thats fine. I'm easily humored, sry.

BTW, WTF is a hipster?? I know its a lame term...possibly one that the true cool cats use to label new users? Like a newb is to the gaming world? I just wouldn't think lammos would hang out in these forums and be so bitter.

PS. I didn't pick up a game, instead I purchased Counting Crows Live in New Amsterdam, awesome setlist, check it out if your CC fan!

I was just being antagonistic. I knew it would ruffle some feathers. I live in New York and I always get a bit riled when I over hear some Salvation Army wearin', Chuck Taylor sportin' unemployed 27 year-old with shaggy hair wasting their parents money in a coffee shop and bitching about how major labels and major corporations are ruining indie music. It gets irritating. Apparently that's not what you are. Sorry I snapped at you.

P.S. I haven't heard the COunting Crows live album. I haven't listened to them in a while. I used to be a big fan. I stopped listening when Adam Duritz started taking anti-depressants. I liked them much better when they were sad.

Hey its cool man! I didn't know Duritz took anti-depressants, but that does explain how their music got a little happier. I still love em anyway.

I've seen Everything Is at a local FYE myself.... It seems to be company policy to stock stuff like this.
