Yet another thread that proves that people on this board are way more into criticizing stuff than saying anything nice. Just peruse any discussion having to do with non-E6 bands (but also plenty of E6 ones) if you don't believe me. Blah blah blah this sucks that sucks everything sucks.
Oh yeah, The Decemberists. I was into them for a few weeks earlier in the summer, but it didn't hold for some reason. Good band though, and I know plenty of people who like them. I'll probably pick up the new album on Napster because free stuff rules.

I liked bits of Picaresque but the earlier albums with the longer songs on them were kinda boring, I thought. But what I liked off of Picaresque I liked mostly because it sounded like the other bands I liked a lot more... you know, like Neutral Milk Hotel... and I also kind of realized I like REM a bit when I heard them.
I guess there's nothing really wrong with that because there's probably not going to be another Neutral Milk Hotel album, but it also kind of makes me think they're like what Coldplay was to Radiohead... kind of dwelling on those bits of other albums that people really liked, as if the original bands are too busy being creative to realize that they had a good thing going.

So, a lurker shows his face when one of his favorite bands is being discussed, and I was going to jump in here and say that it doesn't matter if they're on Capitol or what-not as long as they're writing creative, interesting, entertaining songs and music.
But I just downloaded it here, and I'm not feeling it. There's really been very few Decemberists songs that I have disliked (the overlong, repetitive Bagman's Gambit comes to mind), but this record doesn't seem to hold my interest. Maybe it will grow on me, but my first impression is that this is a much more controlled, less engaging record. It doesn't sound like the record that should follow the exciting Picaresque, the creative Her Majesty, or the melodic Castaways.

i have to disagree. i just sat down and listened to it on headphones and have to say that i was really really impressed. i never imagined the decemberists writing an album like this. it rocks hard and heavy. the island especially stood out. but i like my prog.

The only thing good about Picaresque was "The Mariner's Revenge Song," which was twenty-five tons of badass. I would imagine that the long songs are the only thing I enjoy in this, too.

Alright, I've made myself listen through the whole album without jumping around to find stuff I like.
It's not a bad album overall and out of context from their old work. It's easily their weakest though, and clearly suffers from overproduction. The sophisitication of the songwriting is dumbed down about two notches. I like the track "When the War Came" but in it he says "When the war came, the war came hard". I cringed, he would never previously express something so hamfistedly. "hamfistedly"... speaking of new words, I didn't learn a single one on this record.
There are some musical choices they (band? studio?) make that are very questionable. The ringing distorted chords at the end of Crane Wife 3 are right out of some goofy arena rock song, and while that is a good track, it ends it with a "why did you just do that?" moment. The weird vocal distortion at a few points in a few tracks is tough.
The two songs after The Island are so straightforward they just sound like throwaways that they had to put together for the major label. And "Perfect Crime 2" is like a bad Police song or something, I couldn't get through that one track. The Island is the least musically intricate prog song ever written (maybe for the better?).
The album has its moments, but if I'm going to put in one of their CDs this one is at the bottom of the list, including the B-sides collection I put together. Maybe I'll cut out the Crane Wife suite and keep that one, because its the strongest part of the record. (as an aside - why didn't they put a track break in it? the song stops for two seconds and then the second movement, the part two starts up. There's no segue.)

It makes perfect sense that this album is over-produced as shit, then.
I've really disliked basically everything that guy has done since "The Photo Album."

Why so aggressive? I think The Decemberists have made some pretty good music. Granted, there are a few songs that make you wonder why they were ever conceived to begin with, but I still think they are overall a fine band.

Everyone is saying its really bad, which is a shame as I liked Picaresque, but is the version available to download the same as the one that will be released? It might be that there is still work to be done on it. Hopefully.

chris walla has ruined several decent bands albums by over producing them...if you need more proof check out the thermal's 2nd album...total crud.
I heard a song on my local college radio the other day, and I decided that I still don't like them.
