Does anyone else feel that the Gerbils are by far the most underatted band in the collective, if not one of the most underrated bands period?
I found the Gerbils by a footnote on a lyrics site, I bought Are You Sleepy and just recently purchased Battle of Electricity, and I have to say that both records are just incredible.

My post should have read, "does anyone, excluding Half- Handed,..."

Yeah, but I posted my thoughts on that already at Optical Atlas, so I'll let others post their feelings.

i think that title goes to the sunshine fix. they're one of my favorite bands, e6 or not, and they still don't get much attention, even around here. the gerbils are very much underrated though.

I agree with thekingisdead. The Gerbils are awesome. And The Sunshine should also get more attention.

Gerbils are my 3rd favorite E6 band, probably. Behind NMH and OTC and just ahead of the music tapes.

I find the Gerbils to be the most overrated underrated Elephant 6 band.

I like sleepy music, sometimes. I think the Instruments often go overlooked, too.

Why single me out, Mr Stroppy Chops? Are people not allowed to disagree with you? I have listened to Battle of Electricity about four times and I only stayed awake once.
Sorry, I was only attempting to be humorous. No offense. I'm lame.

I'd say that they are underrated, they're one of those E6 bands that really not many people, even in the indie scene, have heard of. Plus they're a band that not everyone really likes, they're not gonna change the scene like Neutral Milk Hotel, they're not as fun and happy as of Montreal, they're not as outright enjoyable as Elf Power, etc. They have the misfortune of being on E6, I think that if they were on any other label/collective they would be liked more.
I don't know, in comparison to most of E6 they're not extraordinary, but they can make an amazing song every once in a while. 'Crayon Box' is in my top ten songs from the collective easily.

I think the Gerbils are decent songwriters ("Crayon Box" and "Glue" are both top-notch), though there's a bit too much fuzziness there for my taste. Still, despite that (and the fact that the vocals annoy me at times) I still listen to Are You Sleepy on occassion because some of the songs really are quite good.

I think the only reason they're underrated is that you have to listen to it a couple times before you start to get into it. And some people get really impatient.

They are underrated because they never really toured extensively. They put out two EXCELLENT records, but didn't hit the road to spread the gospel enough.
As for Gerbils III, is Jeremy playing drums?

I'd say that's true with a lot of the E6 bands, even the more "popular" ones like Olivia Tremor Control.

you mean two decent records...seriously...this was not a phenomenal band..and if you think so then you're two washed up in the E6 mysticism. Good band yeah. Great no fucking way.

I love when someone says someone else's opinion is shit.
Harnk, don't you think gardenfuck has the right to say they're excellent records?

I have no idea about a record, but so far as the live shows, Laura Carter's been drumming, along with the guy from Zumm Zumm I think. . .

i'm afraid that i have to respectfully disagree with all of you fine people. the most under-rated band, by far, is/was 'dixie blood moustache'. there was never a finer moment in the history of e6 than when the ladies of dixie blood were at their peak. that would have been the 3 lauras (laura glenn, laura carter, and laura hexler) along with beth sale, roxanne martin, barbara denver, and lucy calhoun. there were others who would join in the foray, but in my memory, these were the core of the project. these ladies were the catalyst of the entire group in my opinion. they were always the ones organizing the potlucks, costume parties, and most amazing shows ever seen. i had the great fortune of living with beth sale (and other gerbils) when they would meet and plan their next installment. these consisted of the most magnificant sets (like a giant christmas lit chiffon covered mushroom, where the women would hide in costumes and play various kitchen appliances and other homemade instruments, thereby creating an absolutely enchanting ambiance. the most important aspect of dixie blood moustache was their uncanny way of bringing people together in a spirit of creativity, fun, and unity. these were the days that launched the bands and music discussed on most of these threads. that's why, in my very humble opinion, it was the ladies of dixie blood moustache, that deserve credit the most, but rarely, if ever, get it.
