What's the best review of ITAOTS that people have read?

Er, thanks. Very droll.
Obviously I was talking about the best review on the net - there are hundreds of the things, but I was interested in which ones people have found to be a good read, or even to best convey what it is about the album that is so good.

i know we're trying to accentuate the positive here, but I think Rolling Stone's review might be even worse. Fleetwood Mac?

If somebody gives a good review of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, its fine with me (after all its MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIMES), if some gives a bad review of it its fine with me (everybody has different tastes even if those tastes are so inferior that they don't like ITAOTS) but if someone gives a moderate 50/50 review it makes me mad. Anyway, I have never read a interview of the album thats very good. Some of the Amazon.com customer reviews are okay.
If anyone has read a bad review and knows where to find it on the web, please post it, because i would love to read what they possibily did not like about it.

i played it for a guy i work with and he laughed for a while because he's really into jazz and he thought the horns sounded way off-key. i almost punched him in the knee, but then i thought, oh well, his loss.

I ran a Google search for In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, masturbated, and I'm still none the wiser.
Purpose of my post = wondering whether any of you lovely people had read any good reviews of this awesome album. So far NO ONE has helped me out. Jeez. May as well shout into a toilet.
What would you consider a good review? An actual, objective review or a flowery ode full of excessive adoration?
Then we can know better how to help you.

Hey, that's not bad. But I think I'll give up on this anyway - people are kind of missing the point. I was just wondering whether people were inspired to hear the album after reading a good review, or after they bought it whether they read anything on the internet that really encapsulated what they love about it. I've been toying around with writing about it for ages, but figured there's so much stuff out there that there's no point. But if nothing is springing to anyone's mind as being a particularly good piece of writing about this album, then maybe my time has come . . .

I humbly submit that the lack of a "good" review is due to the failings of the English language to be able to express clearly the coarse and unpolished beauty of the album without the reviewer sounding a drunk groupie.
The common mistake isn't just that though, it's to describe what it is rather than how you feel.

Humph. Ah well - I tried. Can't believe there's nothing out there worth reading. It does stand alone as one of the greatest albums ever made, but I still like reading about these things when I'm bored at work . . .

I vaguely remember some parable about an ox not noticing a fly on its rear end, but I don't remember how it went. What I do remember is that the moral was 'sometimes what you search for in far away places was right under your nose all along.'

I remember reading a review years ago that hailed Jeff Mangum's unique use of narrative and tenses, and that review gave me chills with its insight. I couldn't find it on the above link, but this is hours of great reading if you haven't seen it before. If you find the one about the tenses lemme know.

That's what I've been looking for. And, as you say, right under my nose. Thank you.

Neutral Milk Hotel:
everyone should have this cd. it's so good. the lyrics are chunky and poetic and the music is the same. i hear some people find jeff magnum's voice a little harsh, but i think it's just wonderfully raw.

Wow, that article was an incredible labour of devotion. It stimulated thought on many levels, not all good but I'll let others work it out.
The excruciating detail the man gets into is probably more revealing about that essay report than the plain language that was conveyed. Have fun digesting that monster.

I've never read a review that really did the album justice. Perhaps we're just too close to it and no review can ever really do justice to a work of art.
I have read one negative review, coming from, of all sources, The Onion. They cook up some amazing stuff, but apparently their strength lies almost entirely in the realm of satire.

Oddly enough, the cover story is on me (and probably you too). The Beat Happening album on his t-shirt is certainly in my top 10 of all time.

yeah, that Audio Galaxy review is great. Then came the added bonus of when I got to the byline! Will Robinson Sheff is from the Austin-based band Okkervil River! I have seen them a few times and really dig what they do. The drummer was also the drummer in the Eyesores, who are really great too. In fact, I suggest you all buy "bent at the waist" by the Eyesores at www.handsomerecords.com. Yes, it is a record label that my friend and I run, but I wouldn't plug it if I didn't believe in it.

I just went to Amazon.com, I looked under "Lowest Reviews First" for "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" and gave all the one star reviews "no" for the question at the bottom "was this review helpful?".
William

I don't think many people care whether the reviews are rated helpful or not either, but its just the 3 second satisfaction of it all.
