ok, so i checked out vos and was not overly impressed. tho i am all for innocent pop music, this album just seemed to be a little TOO cartoonish for my taste. since this is my first taste of apples in stereo, my question to y'all is: is the sound of this album similar to the rest of their albums? which other ones would you recommend, and how would you rate this one compared to their previous works?

thanks, luvvies!

if you think that vos is too cartoonish or poppy or whatever, they for your own sake, do NOT check out other releases such as dicovery of a world inside the moone or... or pretty much anything. infact, this is probably the least "cartoonish" AiS release, in my sleep deprived opinion..... i mean theres the track here and there thats highly un-cartoonish, but most of it really is cartoontacular.

thanks. prob not for me then. just wanted to give them a proper chance for the sake of musical comradarie or whatnot.

I would not call the music cartoonish...I would just say great POP music (and I mean POP as in the 60's verison not today's).

Hmm, I disagree with Heather, I think kp7vegan would do well to check out other Apples records, maybe Tone Soul Evolution and older stuff. I think the Apples are fantastic pop music, but I don't like VOS so much. It is a bit sweeter than their other records.

Actually, I couldn't agree with Heather more. Velocity of Sound is probably the least "twee" or "cartoonish" (or whatever connotation (not ones that I use, mind you) you want to apply. If the person doesn't like VOS, they probably won't like anything else by them.

And this isn't even a quality of the music thing, just a sound thing (even though VOS is among the Apples' very best).

I would reccomend "Her Wallpaper Reverie". It is there most "Experimental" (most like Olivia Tremor Control?), and therefore not as "cartoonish" or whatever.

check out older releases I can't stand vos -but i love the others. It sounds too comerical( kinda marketable pop punk, plus it's only like 28 mins long) fun trick noisemaker, her wall paper, or world inside the moon are a ton better.

just my opinion

hehehe, i was pissed off a wee bit for a while yesterday, sorry if that sonded harsh, hehe....

but i still stand by what i said, except that i have to add that you shouldnt just write off the apples because theyre a little poppy, or because of other peoples opinions... go seeee (hear) for yourself! its fantastic music, a lot of poppin' fun.

I'd have to say that I enjoy VoS but I don't consider it my favorite nor the greatest example of the apples. Check out some of their older stuff and you'll be surprised. Discovery of a world...; her wallpaper reverie; and tone soul evolution = HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Don't be turned off by VoS.

and what the heck..."cartoonish".

hope this helps.

ok, y'all have convinced me to try out some of their other works. thanks for your recommendations.

btw, i hope i didn't offend some of you by using the word "cartoonish." i didn't imply for that adjective to be a bad thing.

one more thing...i played vos at work today and it definitely brightened up the office a bit. so, i think i may have been a bit hasty in labeling that record as "not so good" as it seems the darn thing has grown on me some. it probably also depends a lot on my mood at the time.

This may sound funny, but some of my favorite albums are the ones that at first listen I did not connect with right away. We have all kinds of different moods and mind sets throughout a day, week, or month, so if you allow things to be heard a few times you just may like it. I usually listen to something 4-5 times before I write it off and even then it is usually not completely written off.

yeah, thats so true pepe.

theres all these albums i buy that i listen to once and then sit lonely and filthily in some obscure part of my room, until one day i give em another chance, and i fall completely heels over head with it.

very beautifully put! i especially like the "sit lonely and fithily in some obscure part of my room" part. hehe.

but yeah, i too need to give a record time to settle in so that all of the juices can properly absorb into my brain. i think the only album that i loved instantly (and i mean INSTANTLY) was weezer's "pinkerton." i remember all i heard were the opening chords on the first song and i instantly fell in love with it. it was craaaazy.

I love pinkerton! i was the same way. actually there are many albums that i have fallen in love with after a first listen. need i mention that nmh in the aeroplane... is on that list.

kp7vegan, are you vegan?

I initially heard "I want" on the radio, and that's how I got into the apples. I think VoS is a terrific album, although I do agree previous albums are better.

That is so true! There are so many albums that I hated on the first few listens and tossed them aside. Only to give them another try months later and curse myself for being so stupid and not liking it the first go around.

I guess sometimes it depends on the mood you are in too...

But as far as AIS goes, Her Wallpaper.. and Tone Soul Evolution are my faves.. You should definetly give them a whirl..

I just got Velocity of Sound, it's the first Apples in Stereo CD I've listened to (I got it on sale at Borders), and I think it's quite obviously very cartoonish. I like it a little but, but I don't really think it's anything spectacular, partly because it's so short and single-minded (there's not a lot of variation, which probably works in favor of it being short in any case), and partly because it's just pop-punk and doesn't really bring anything new to the table, it doesn't do anything extraordinarily creative.

That being said, it's a pretty good bunch of well written songs. It's just not a classic to me. I'll eventually get around to their other stuff and see if it's any better. It probably is.

I'd just have to say that I don't find the Velocity album cartoony at all. I find it very mature and evolved, sort of the antithesis of pretension and false sentimentality that is common in the really "marketable" music of today. It's honest, and I don't see how that makes it cartoony. Because by saying cartoony you mean that it is childish and has no real meaning.

Yet, certain cartoons are genious (Chuck Jones) and very powerful. Just because you can let your kids watch them does not detract from that, it only adds to the genious of the work. So I would have to say that The Apples are more like an animated short (genious, truthful, and... short) than a saturday morning cartoon, most of which tend to be merely vehicles for toy advertisements.

no, disgusted by folks who think the apples should redo walpaper and tone sole (a real boring shite record) over and over again who actually listen to fuggin' weezer. if ya' dig them ya don't like the seeds anyhow so watcha' doin' listening to the apples?
you could derive better tunes from schneider's dirty toilet paper, butt not somebody else's (TSE for example).

haha! I totally forgot about this thread and that post I put up! I meant the "groovy" part though--just a vibe I got from your posts I guess--you seemed cool...and besides, VoS is your favorite Apples, so you gotta be pretty darn cool ;)

VoS is my second favorite full-length (behind Fun Trick Noisemaker) and my third favorite Apples release period (Science Faire is #1).

Anyway, this was a while ago--but I trust you're still groovy!

later everyone!
