I have a recording from the March 27th, 1997 40 Watt Show. Elf Power, Of Montreal, and Neutral Milk Hotel. I had a 4 track set up in the back of the club near the sound booth where they had the couches. Not sure if they are still there. But that is besides the point.

It'd be great if you could post a link. If you don't have hosting space, I bet there are plenty of people on this board who would bwe more than happy to host it.

Currently, the shape it's in I wouldn't really do anything with it. I spoke with Derek Almstead about the possibilty of trying to master it a bit to take some of the edge off it. Especially the Neutral portion. The Elf Power and Of Montreal sets are a little more in control.
I have no authority to really do anything with them. Especially the Neutral portion.

Wait, are you saying you're not going to post it?

Yeah, please share it. I'd be happy to host it on my site. If you'd be willing to send me the master, I'd be more than willing to do the conversion and possible EQing to improve it. I have an old analog 4-track hooked up to my PC already, so it'd be no problem.
And don't worry about "authority". There are roughly 50 known NMH live recordings out there.. none had any authority (with the exception of Jittery Joes). Jeff has never expressed any reservations about live recordings being shared. Demos maybe, but not live stuff.

And I would love the of Montreal set, probably more than the NMH set. I don't think there are a lot of 1997 of Montreal shows floating around. Of Montreal has never shown any opposition to sharing recordings except, like NMH, in the case of demos.

If you're not going to post it, why even bother talking about?

I will talk to some people and see what happens. I posted about it just generally chatting after arriving here and looking at the boards. Not trying to be a dick as soniclovenoize suggests. No, I will not just throw this posted up somwhere. Having known people that play in these bands makes me feel that at the very least they should have the right to listen to it first and decide whether they want it made available. If they do then I will be happy to post it. I think it will happen but for now patience....

i think we are all curious why you would mention that you have something we all want if you don't know for sure if you'll be sharing it. i'm not sure what kind of conversation we could have about that

I understand what you're saying. I would just personally feel better about it handling the way mentioned above. It's just a respect thing for people that were personally involved.
As far as mentioning it. I think it is good for people to know it exists. I am sure eventually people will hear it. I certainly wasn't mentioning it to get people all fired up.
I also have a tape of a short set at a party at my old house in Athens (House Explosion) where Derek, Kevin, Dottie, a couple horn players and myself play. It was called something lame like the neighborhood clockwork. It was the only time we played. That I would not be opposed to posting as it was something I was personally involved in.
Anyway, I have been working on some stuff for an acoustic show. While working on songs I started doing an Elf Power song. That just led me to break out the tapes and check it out. I then went to the E6 website which led me to this board. Derek had told me about it awhile ago but I never really thought to come check it out. I read some of the postings and figured I would post. No more, no less.

hey hordak, if that really is your name ;), i have no problem with you releasing this show. if you want me to fix up the nmh part that's fine but it'll take a while for me to get to it, i suggest just letting it go as is. people can clean it up for themselves. i remember you mentioning this a while ago but i had forgotten about it. if nmh wnts to make money off it, i'm sure they could could create artwork, have it mastered, etc. but it would still end up being shared... i say f- it. i hope all is well in manasshole. d

Sweet D-Rock. Consider it done. It will take me a little time to get to it as well as I have some things coming up. I only have on 4 track tape still and not cd even. Hey D, tell your brother I am doing an acoustic thing Sunday March 19th at the Pliadelphia Tavern at 12:30 in the afternoon. I never see that kid. The new band with Paul, and those guys is going to be called The Duked of Yorkshire. How you love that? Hope all is well D. Milt is in town for a month. I saw him last month when I was in NY. While I was there I met Eddie Money, and Marie Osmond. Odd, huh? Anyway, I'll save the rest of the personal stuff for private e-mail I guess.
I may be contacting you after all defgav or someone because I have no way of hosting it, or am not that saavy. Whatever.
Everyone should be more obsessed with Derek and his ever growing collection of fungal undies collected for the art masterpiece of pie. And with that I bid this message board fondue!

yay. please don't forget about it!
and again, i've got a 4 track hooked up to my pc.. so if you're busy, you could just mail me the tapes and leave everything to me. i'd send you back your tapes, cd copies of them, plus i'd host mp3s on my site and praise you for your awesome coolness.

After some consideration I may sell the original tapes of this show. Over the holidays I will work to make some copies of it. Obviously one for myself and most likely a few for people who have devoted sites to posting NMH material. This way someone who really wants to own, keep preserve, whatever, the original tapes can. All the while it will be made available to people from being posted as well.
The tapes are boxed up and I haven't even looked through it in awhile. If I remember though the tapes of the show are 2 NMH, 2 Of Montreal, and 2 Elf Power. I could be wrong though because it has been awhile. Unfortunately I do think on at least one of the tapes it may cut out mid-song before being switched to the second tape. Hey it was dark..I haven't even listened to the tapes in forever because my 4 track is damaged. Anyway, I will have access to a decent 4 track during the holidays (and some computer noodlers) and will try to see what it even sounds like. If I remember correctly the tapes are a bit muddy sounding but go figure. I remember at the time thinking the Of Montreal portion came out the best. So that being said...Defgav you sent me an e-mail through ebay that I erased on accident. You can e-mail me there again or if you want just let me know your e-mail. I will do my best to get you a copy and then you can post it. As you can see by when this post was original started this may take some time. So please refrain from threatening me or saying weird things about lotion and puppies. I don't have a lot of time to work on this so just be patient.
P.S. Listen to more stuff that involves Derek Almstead. I also think Mr. Helium is great and I think I owe him an Elvis compilation cd from a past life. (conversation from 9 years ago I am am amazed to remember) Oh yeah and I always thought Fable Factory was great!!!

Hang on. If you had reservations about sharing it without permission from the bands concerned, surely it's more immoral to sell the tapes than to share them?

I think the recent big deal over the VU acetate made many people think about cashing in on rare recordings in their possession. Plus there's the Jeff drawings fetching $300.
thehordak is nice enough to freely share the recording online (soon hopefully). If a big fan wants to shell out some money for the master tapes for their collectors value, that doesn't seem too bad.

In answer to the why sell the tape now is this. I tried originally to see if anyone cared what I would do with the tape. It was pretty much a resounding no. (other then make it available) So recently when whipping out some stuff for Christmas I see the box with all the tapes in it. So I think man it is stupid for this to just be sitting here in a box. So the VU thing had nothing to do with it. Also honestly if there was any weird greed factor I could have sold this long ago, or never said anything and just put it on ebay. I think I did the right thing and it will be shared. I don't see the harm in selling the master tape to a collector or as I said someone that will preserve the tape. So have a happy holidays kiddies and my parting words are that 1 shot Vanilla Vodka + 1 Pint Guiness makes a great Holiday drink. Enjoy!

That sounds kind of gross. Then again, I didn't think Irish Car Bombs would be as delicious as they are either.
p.s. I don't know how these recordings are going to be distributed on the internets but oh please oh please I want. <3
