I usually reply with something like "Neutral Milk Hotel is to music what panthers are to sweatpants, and that all these are beautiful when your tongues are paved with squirrel bait... some hate and some just wait, like waiting on line at a deli, you think you want ham but you know it's real smelly..but so good in the belly, and yeah"

Neutral Milk Hotel are like a tall glass of milk: good with cookies.
They also can sound a bit like John Cale-era Velvet Underground, in the sense that John Cale-era Velvet Underground sounds like a church organ falling onto a pile of accordians while Lou Reed sings off to the side (in a good way). Except it's not Lou Reed, it's Jeff Mangum, which is a bit like saying "it's not a light-bulb, it's a cruise liner". And plus that's only on "Everything Is" and "Song Against Sex". The rest of the time, Neutral Milk Hotel sound like an accordian falling onto a pile of sleeping Jeff Mangums.

syd barret sounds like bob dylan on speed? i'm not sure what you're listening to.
please just avoid using "it sounds like so and so meets so and so on acid and they're doing something funny and weird". just say it's good music and tell them to listen.

If people had never heard Nutral Milk Hotel before, how would they know what anything falling into Jeffs would sound like? That is like telling a blind kid that the red candy bar is the one without the razor blades.
