i just started getting into this torrent thing ... does anyone know anything about this site or have an extra invite they could donate to me? i know this is a shot in the dark, but this is really the only message board i ever read and it seems people on here would be hip to this thing.

actually i have a friend on oink who gave me an invite. apparently i didnt really understand how the whole thing works and got kicked off. he might give me another invite though.

but actually im not sure the whole torrents thing is for me. i dont really like the idea of having to download a ton of crap i have no desire to listen to just so that other people can get stuff from me to keep up my ratio.

you should never download anything you dont want just to help your ratio. if you can't keep seeding stuff you like until you get a good ratio, then you're probably the last person to download the stuff

i understand, appreciate and respect what lou2ser is trying to say, but i think it's really too late to be protective and actually a bit counterproductive. embrace the piracy, it's the cultural revolution of our era. i've recorded a lot of records and -hate to say-i have never gotten a check for record sales (ever). i'll tell you how i have made money from it, live concerts and merchandise. as far as i'm concerned the more people that hear the music the more people that will be at the concerts. obviously, this doesn't apply to bands that don't play anymore, but the people who's careers are really on the line are the people and bands struggling now. besides, after all the players are dead and gone, maybe the music will survive through widespread distribution, and to me, this seems like the biggest culturally impactive advance since radio.

I've been in bands for years now and I just released my 2nd cd and try to tell people this all the time... unless you sell millions of copies NO BAND MAKES MONEY FROM THEIR RECORD DEAL OR CD SALES (except cd sales at shows)... 90% of a band's income comes from shows and merchandise so IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SUPPORT A BAND GO SEE THEM LIVE AND BUY A T-SHIRT. Buying a CD at Virgin Megastore does NOTHING to support the artist. It just makes the exploiters more money... and it kills me how the record company tries to bullshit us and portray it as though its the artists who are losing money by downloading - ITS THE CORPORATE THIEVES NOT THE ARTISTS WHO LOSE MONEY FROM DOWNLOADING... I can't believe how many people have the misconception that if you have a record out and in stores you must be making money... it just doesn't work that way...
Though in Lou2ser's defense I must say.... it is kind of uncool for your first post to be asking for an invite... but then again you can go on Amazon.com and get the UPC # so...

CDs selling does increase the chances that a label will release another album by that artist though, so if it's a band that enjoys having wide distribution and likes to put their discs out on a label, buying their albums is certainly still supporting them.
