thanks again, lou2er. i've just been browsing oink and it's pretty rad. at first it motivated me to actually try to torrent something (which i've never done before), but the harsh tone and strict rules that permeate the site are a bit too much. hopefully i can get by just downloading things and sharing.

Sorry this offer was only for people who have been here since 2005.

I'm all tapped out for now, all invites have been given away. If you asked for one and didn't get an invite, check your Spam folder or your U2Us on this board.

Um, ok. It didn't actually say that anywhere in the thread though, did it? Maybe it did and I missed it. Hopefully I can get that last one from astro.

So about Oink... I'm trying to learn how to upload things. So first I create the torrent (using utorrent). Then I fill in all the information in "upload". And then it says that I have to download the torrent to be able to seed it, which it also does automaticly. And what do I do after that? If I start the torrent nothing happens, it just stays at 0% and I don't really know what to do...

Neil
02-18-2006, 08:57 PM
You just need to leave it running, sounds like you've completed all the steps right. It won't start uploading until someone comes along and jumps on the torrent. Make sure it's showing up ok in the torrent list etc, and if it is, then you just have to wait.

does like seeding like this tend to make your computer slow? and if it does.. is there a remedy? cause i think it makes my computer slow...

astro
02-18-2006, 11:36 PM
It shouldnt make your computer slow, BUT it may be making your internet speed slow. If this is the case there is a solution. You must limit your upload speed to about 80% of your line capacity. To test your line capacity go here http://testmy.net/ and click on the upload test. Read your KB/s and then figure out the 80% and plug that as a max in your bittorrent program. If it is making your whole computer slow then you should get a new client, I recommend utorrent.

Well the thing is that the torrent says that I'm trying to download the files (unsuccessfully) instead of waiting for someone to seed it to. That can't be right...

Yeah, bitcomet slowed my comp down alot as well, and apparently you can't use it with oink anyways, so I switched to utorrent which work much better.

paulpaul

really? thats great new! i think haha im definetly switcheing to utorrent then thanks for the info!! :D

There's a link in the torrent forum area on oink on how to upload using utorrent. Simple and easy.

paulpaul
02-20-2006, 10:14 PM
ummm so how do you really get your ratio up? cause i coulda swore i knew how but it keeps going down.. i had it up to .95 then it dropped to .45 cause i started trying to leach to much i think... but how do i get it back up? anyone know?

paulpaul
02-20-2006, 10:19 PM
you want to be seeding the torrents right? does that get it up? and to much leeching brings it down?.. i could read the faq to figure these things out... buth then... im way lazy...

paulpaul
02-20-2006, 10:21 PM
sigh its down to .41 now... damn it

Yeah, found it, got the link: http://teoulas.myname.gr/utorrent115/index.html
And when I'm following that guide step by step, it still doesn't work. The problem is at step 11. That doesn't happen at all, instead for trying to seed the file, it tries to download it, so yeah. Still the same problem. I have no problem seeding stuff that I download though, but it'd be nice to be able to upload stuff as well...

And yeah, seeding brings the ratio up and leeching brings it down.

Plastic_hero
02-21-2006, 04:24 AM
Oh never mind, it works now. That was stupid. I had to point the save folder to the folder where the music already was for it to start seed. Bah.

paulpaul

so is the general consensious that oink is better than indietorrents? indietorrents seems ok.. i think i like dimeadozen better tho... interesting enough, i prollly just havent been on indietorrents long enough tho

Plastic_hero
02-22-2006, 05:40 PM
Is it just me, or isn't very hard to find anything at all by smaller artists on Oink? It seems like it's much easier to find stuff on soulseek. Is indietorrents better at this?

clouds-chan
02-22-2006, 06:14 PM
I noticed the same thing.

astro
02-22-2006, 10:01 PM
yes indietorrents is better for that, but really you should take advantage of the request feature on oinks, once you become a poweruser. Its wonderful.

Indietorrents is a lot better for small artists and requests (anyone can request there) are filled within a few hours...if it is a familiar band.

The thing about these torrent sites is that they have everything that has come out in the last month or two but it may be hard to just search and hope they have a half-handed cloud album from 3 years ago. I always fill requests though if I have the album and some free time.

clouds-chan
02-22-2006, 10:48 PM
yeah, i'm only going to use it for new releases. slsk is good for everything else.

hey everyone :)

I'm wondering if anyone has an OiNK invite they'd be willing to share with me....I was sick for a few months, and they deleted my "inactive" acct., even though I asked my friend to check it periodically.
I had a good ratio when I was on, and I always share 2-4 times what I d/l.

please, if anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated since I miss my OiNK acct. very very much. :(

quick question... so i changed from bitcomet to utorrent which seems to be running alot better.. is there anyway to transfer the already leached files into utorrent so i can seed them and keep my ratio up? it doesnt seem to be letting me... eh o well, by the by lou2ser, thanks alot for the invite its done me wonders...

Ignatius
02-27-2006, 10:15 PM
just make sure the utorrent download directory is in the same place as it was before with bitcomet (I assume it would be something like c\program files\bitcomet\downloads), then re-download the torrent that you had completed with bitcomet. it should start seeding, no problem.

Ignatius
02-27-2006, 10:16 PM
alternately, just move whatever you downloaded before into utorrent's download directory, just make sure you don't try to open bitcomet again and seed, or it'll re-download the whole thing.

paulpaul
02-27-2006, 10:54 PM
thanks

Plastic_hero
02-28-2006, 05:24 AM
That sounds like the problem I had. You could also open the torrent with "Open Torrent (no default save)" and then choose the downloading folder as the one where you already had the files in (and then you don't have to move anything, yay).

Also, my info:
Ratio: 2.630 Uploaded: 6.66 GB Downloaded: 2.53 GB
No wonder I had a bad day so far

I'm also curious about Indietorrents. I've been on Dimeadozen and Oink (thanks kevlarsoul) for a few months now.

All but one of my Oink invites were given to e6townhall members...and while I don't currently have any invites to give out, I'm always willing to give them out to fellow board members when I do.

...so if anyone has some extra indietorrents invites just lying around.....I'd love to see what it's all about.

What are some of the good things on Indietorrents and OiNKs right now?
Is it really worth it if I use DC++ or Soulseek?

I'd like to check each of them out but with their crazy and thorough rules I'm afraid I wont use it right or configure well enough and get banned or just go inactive or have a bad share ratio. (although I dont plan on downloading GIGabytes of music..)
