Spreading the music

A friend and I have recently started a musical project, not neccessarily a "band", but music nonetheless. The problem is, I have not the slightest idea about how to release music to the world, even less of an idea than most of the people on this board.

Could someone help or point towards some useful information?

if you wanted to sell albums, the easiest route might be cafepress.com and a website.

as for advertising... no idea.
