I believe if my memory serves me right that Jeff Mangum and Jeremy Barnes made some last minute calls before aeroplane was released and came up with two rather eccentric artists. Kermit (the) Frog fingerpainted all of the artwork, and Bill Nye(the science guy) actually painted all the text with an almost microscopic paintbrush. The whole thing never made much sense but they did work for free and look how well it turned out!

Bill Nye The Science Guy was part of theproject too?! Man, that just makes the album even more legendary for me!
I always thought that the cover of Aeroplane was a collage Jeff did from several different pieces.

Well, he is composed entirely of Cesium (Caesium), so I don't think so.

Name: Cesium
Symbol: Cs
Atomic Number: 55
Atomic Mass: 132.905
Atomic Volume: 67.84 cc/mol
Discovered By: Bunsen and Kirchhoff
Discovery Date: 1860
Origin of Name: Cesium - (Latin) caesius (sky blue) (from its bright blue spectral lines)
Toxicity: No information available.
Summary: Not found free in Nature. Cesium is the most electropositive natural element. Reacts explosively with water. Cesium melts at just above room temperature. Cesium hydroxide is one of the strongest bases known.
Thank you science.

Brian Dewan is credited as "Illustrations" and Chris Bilheimer is credited as "Art Direction." I know Bilheimer has done a lot of covers and art for bands like R.E.M. and Green Day recently... Also, Jeff played at Chris Bilheimer's birthday party in 98!

Brian Dewan is one of New York City's foremost musical inventors and innovators. He has created scores of instruments for homemade music, including the bass zither, and is a frequent collaborator with They Might Be Giants, the Blue Man Group, Sesame Street, Flaming Fire and Loser's Lounge.

He has also created album art for bands like David Byrne and Neutral Milk Hotel.

Dewan's newest invention with his cousin Leon Dewan is the Dewanatron, a collection of uncanny synths that are operated with devices like manual telephone dials, create sounds evocative of the The Silver Apples or Raymond Scott.

Dewan is a member of the Raymond Scott Orchestrette, a group dedicated to reinterpreting Scott's compositions, and appeared on their 2002 album Pushbutton Parfait.
this is some of his stuff:

And if you're thinking I have a wealth of information you're wrong, I just searched his name on Wikipedia... ;)

This is his David Byrne cover:

Kim Cooper's Aeroplane book talks about the album art. If I remember correctly, Brian Dewan drew the flying record player on the insert. Jeff came up with the cover by modifying an old postcard he found. Chris Bilheimer put everything together and decided upon the font and stuff. i think.

btw, if anybody ever comes across the original unmodified postcard, that would be neat to see.
