It’s quite surprising for me to start a post that’s actually about music, let alone two in one night! (Well I’m bored…)

When I first got into Elephant 6 (through following ‘people who downloaded X also downloaded Y’ on Audiogalaxy) it was really great because there was so much new music for me, rather than the odd band. So, have people found similar ‘scenes’ (I really don’t know what other word to use…) that had did this, either current or long dead?

On a similar note, has anyone ever heard anything from any ‘Canterbury Scene’ bands? I haven’t, but I’ve read about them and it’s really weird to think that my home town (which is awful for live music, grumble grumble) has a whole ‘scene’ named after it. I just wondered if they were any good, here’s a wiki about it:
Canterbury Scene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbury_scene)
It seems interesting, and the way they swapped musicians with other local bands reminded me of E6 a bit (but I guess this happens quite a lot in small areas). Some of the names are familiar but I don't think I've heard any.

And yeah, I couldn't come up with a better name for this thread...

I used to listen to Soft Machine a bit, but it never really caught on. I thought the last Robert Wyatt album was okay, but again, nothing really stuck in my mind, though I think I probably should listen to both artists a little more before I can actually appreciate them. But it didn't really seem 'my thing'. For some reason, I thought the Soft Machine sounded a bit like a more out-there Fairport Convention. That was a couple of years ago, though.

As for other 'scenes', collectives, whatnot, I have to say that I don't think, beyond a few meagre attempts, I've seen anything on the level of Elephant 6 - at least, in the genre. I suppose you could mention, for example, the whole Tropacalia scene, but it's really hardly the same thing. I suppose you get a lot of scenes building up around towns, for example Athens or Portland.

Ah, whatever. It's refreshing to be able to talk about music again.

All other "scenes" sort of focus around a genre and its development. For example, I've been getting into more No Wave lately, a lot of which focuses around a few bands from New York in the late 70's, early 80's, as well as a couple of british proto-punk type acts.

k records, jewelled antler....those are contemporary collectives.

my favorite "scene" was the free jazz scene in new york, mid to late 60's.
