Ok people. This has been done twice before, with Neutral Milk Hotel.
I think it's about time that we start this up for OTC, epsecially now that we have the OTC tab database of doom going.
Now, the formula for this is simple enough. If you want on the comp, just post and say so on here. After a month or two, we'll take the ones we have, host 'em somewhere (like...say...my site), and from then on it's free sharing for all.
Now, according to the tabs thread, the following songs have alread been reserved by the following usernames. :
mikehattem - Green Typwriters I
Zachy - Sylvan Screen
auxillaryoctipus - Love Athena
Olie- California Demise 3
Little Dish Z - Grass Cannons
everything else is open.
Once we have enough people wanting to do this, we can set a deadline.
Now, be sure that the covers are something that you can do in an original style...it might make everything a little bit more interesting.
Also...for any Olivias that may be lurking around these parts: If this is something you would rather us not do, that's totally cool. Just say the word. We're not making money off this.
Let's rock, starting now.

not sure if FattyWompus is serious or not, but two friends and myself had begun a recording of Not Feeling Human for fun a couple of days ago, and would be more than willing to submit it. If Fatty would like to submit his humming opus, we could do something else, perhaps Train Director.

I'll do something, but since somebody already grabbed "love athena" (which I was going to do the last time we were going to do this) I'll have to think of something else... hmm...

why don't we make up original songs together, not otc ones?
and i know if we could write them a good hit song and then,
i know we could be in a billionair boys club too--!

mikehattem - Green Typwriters I
Zachy - Sylvan Screen
auxillaryoctipus - Love Athena
Olie- California Demise 3
Little Dish Z - Grass Cannons
charrrddddd - Green Typwriters IV
ZacharyEmerson - I'm Not Feeling Human
hekingisdead - Hilltop Procession
SlowCoreSadness - Transparent Dream OR Hideaway
That's the updated list. I'd like to add at least 2 or 3 more submissions (preferably more) before we make this an actual serious thing with a deadline and all that. Once we get enough people, we'll set a deadline, and it'll be pretty bitchin'.
So. C'mon people. Let's go!

i would absolutely love to hear this. no offense to whoever already has it, but i think you should give it to imota.
since it appears we have time, why don't you put me down for gravity car. i have to figure out how to put songs on the computer first though. i'll most likely end up bailing so if anyone else wants to do it just say so. there's a couple others i'm going to try out.

braintostem - Another Set Of Bees In The Museum
14 songs. Now we're talkin'
Imota, you will either have to pick another song, or get in touch with Olie about swtiching. It would be awesome to have you on the comp.
Allright everyone, this is officially a go.
a few points:
a) Participants, try and make your covers different, interesting, and something a little different than the original versions (not that i think this'll be hard...i mean, who can really replicate all that stuff?) make it fun!
b) If you have any questions about chords, etc. either ask the tabs datbase thread, or figure them out yourself.
c) email me your email addresses at aeroplaneaudio at gmail dot com. Include: your townhall username, artist name, and the track you're doing. When you're done, send your songs to that same address.
d) it's not too late for others to join! If you're interested, post here.
e) Start thinking about artwork, etc.
f) preliminary deadline for submissions is May 25th (2 months from now). That should give everyone plenty of time to get all their ducks in a row, etc. If anyone thinks that's too much time or too little time, let me know. as of right now, it's pretty flexible.
That's the deal. Have fun!

I am still doing Hilltop Procession.
And I would like to try something, it may not work, but it might be cool. And if it doesn't work, I think I have a way to make it work.
Everyone who wants to (I'm hoping a lot of you, it would only take like five minutes, if you have the equipment), send a wav file of yourself singing along to the "la la las" at the end of the song to dearcassio@yahoo.com. Make sure your singing match es up. Send multiple parts if you can, so I can get all the harmonies.
Can anyone do it?

I dunno, getting all those to match together would be realy really tricky. What you might want to do is make a click track and post that online and have people sing the part while listening to that with headphones. I can host that click track if you need it.

Allright...we have 16 now.
A few more updates:
a) A lot of people still need to email me. Right now I only have emails from mikehattem, thekingisdead, and braintostem. EVERYONE ELSE: If you want to be on the comp, send me an email to aeroplaneaudio at gmail.com. In this email please include:
Your townhall username
You band or artist name
The song that you're doing.
This is just so i have a definite idea of who is going to be on the comp.
b) braintostem - the link to the OTC tab thread is >>>right here (http://www.e6townhall.com/viewthread.php?tid=4929&page=1) (though it seems all of hypecity's posts have been replaced with...uhh..toasts.
I'm funny, i swear.
Anyways, I know alot of the same people post on there that do here, but it can't hurt to ask and see who responds. If you're stil finding it totaly impossible, you're more than welcome to switch songs. There's still a ton of good ones avaliable.
c) artwork - thekingisdead, that's some nice work, keep it coming. Everybody try and brainstrom ideas for layout and such.
As for the name, I like Fanfare at Cubist castle, but my only beef with it is that it limits itself to a specific album, instead of the wide range of stuff that's actually going to be on the comp.
that may matter a lot less than i think, though.
that is all. please continue to co-exist peacefully.

This thing has legs.
Changes in the lineup from last time: carrotus_rex has joined and taken the song "Jumping Fences." Belefonte has expressed interest in contributing, though his first pick was already taken. Braintostem swtiched from doing "Another Set of Bees..." to making a few "animation themes" that will run between some of the songs.
With those changes: this is the current list:
mikehattem - Green Typwriters I
Zachy - Sylvan Screen
auxillaryoctopus - Love Athena
Ollie - California Demise 3
Little Dish Z - Grass Cannons
charrrrddddd - Green Typwriters IV
ZacharyEmerson - I'm Not Feeling Human
thekingisdead - HIlltop Procession
SlowCoreSadness - Hideaway
Call me hi - Mystery
The Hurdy Gurdy Man - Black Foliage (itself)
JoshTheBoyd - I Have Been Floated
braintostem - (animation themes)
Snake Oil Pete - NYC-25
Laika - Gravity Car (Maybe?)
belefonte - ? (Hideaway is taken)
carrotus_rex - Jumping Fences
More stuff:
1) THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT STILL NEED TO EMAIL ME.
Auxillaryoctopus
Olie
Call me hi
The Hurdy Gurdy Man
Snake Oil Pete
Laika
Belefonte
Please do so, to aeroplaneaudio @ gmail .com. All I need is your artist name, your townhall username, and the song that you're doing. This is jsut so I can have a good idea of how many people are confirmed to be on the comp. Plus, it means I can email you guys all at once, which makes life simpler for me :).
2) The deadline is still May 25.
This may be changed still if i don't get a whole bunch of songs in by then, but for the most part it should stay.
3) Releasing
We need to discuss and decide how exactly we want to release this tribute album. I would like to have a hard-copy CD release, especially when we have such awesome cover artwork. If we end up doing this, though, you would have to pay to get a CD, just so I can cover the costs of duplicating them.
I suppose i can also involve my label i'm starting into this, but once happens then money starts becoming important and I'd really rather not attach monetary stuff to this kind of a project.
It might just be easier to release it online.
4) As always, more submissions are welcome...

did you like it man?? The bass is gonna be redone by my bass player but otherwise I played all the guitars, keys, sounds, and all 3 vocals... I tried to keep the basic feel of it but to do it as if I were recording one my own band's songs... I took that approach and gave it my basic National Steel instrumentation (B3-Mellotron-acoustic gtrs)... if you like this cover of GT man, then check out my band's site - this is a pretty good representation of our sound "on record"... our myspace has three songs from our new record which I recorded and produced myself (playing everything except the bass) over the winter...

I don't have the time to concieve and start one from scratch but I could add some cool stuff to somebody else's... i.e. reverse tape loops, synth sounds, effects, maybe even some weird harmonies if its that kind of thing... maybe something like 60 seconds...

sorry guys, it looks like i'm out. i couldn't quite get mine to work the way i wanted it to. plus i don't know if the sound quality would be up to par. with finals and such, i just don't have the time to work it out properly. so i guesss mystery is up for grabs.

For alot of the same reasons (I can't get the song the way I want it to be, poor quality, etc) along with a very sudden financial emergency, it looks like I am out as well.
Hideaway is open.

well... if you bumped back the date I MAY be able to do something....
and if no one is going to do Hideaway, I would do that one.
or if slowcore still wants it, I will still do black foliage (itself)
maybe.
time is honey.
and I'm diabetic.

It kinda sucks but it happens alot... I think mostly because people get genuinely excited about doing something for a fanfare but then realize they don't have the time or whatever... It makes them harder to organize I guess but its good that so many people are interested in contributing in the first place...

i guess another reason i didn't want to is because i've never played any of my stuff for anybody and i kind of chickened out. i would've still contributed if my song was really good, but i really couldn't see it on the same cd as mikehattem's green typwriters. that was really good. basically i wouldn't have been paying much of a tribute.

call me hi.... now I kinda wished I hadn't posted it just yet... i don't want anybody to NOT contribute... I probably just have a little more time on my hands to get this stuff done... JUST DOING SOMETHING IS PAYING TRIBUTE!!! thats what a fanfare project is all about... certainly we're not judging you against anybody else's submission... besides, I'm sure its a lot better than you think... I play and record music as my main gig (no real money yet, and self-releasing records) but its what I do mostly and because of that I have a lot software and other stuff (and spend way more time on it than somebody who has a life)... Hearing a heartfelt cover even if its just acoustic guitar and vocal through a radio shack mic is just as cool and its those kinds of tracks that give the Fanfares their heart... you know what I mean?? Come on man, SEND IT IN!!!!
The last thing I ever wanted when I recorded that for the fanfare was for it to discourage somebody from contributing... actually I was kinda hoping it would spur everybody who was on the fence to say fuck it and give it a shot...

don't worry about it man, i was just a little serious in my last post. i'm not as intimidated as i sounded (although yours is definitely on another level). if i did have more time to spend on it i most likely would still send it in. it's not like i'm ashamed of my song, it's probaly the most rocking tune i've ever recorded, but it definitely needs a lot more work. i might even post it here when i finally get it done, although that might be ages since i usually go for quantity over quality with my songwriting. but, these cover projects seem to take a long time to get off the ground, so i may make the deadline yet. i'm going to keep working on it regardless.

(to aeroplaneaudio at gmail dot com, send me your artist name, your townhall username, and the cover of the song you're doing)
THINGS:
1) THE DEADLINE IS EXTENDED!
Due to the fact that we've had some new people join up recently, combined with the fact that it doesn't look like too many are very far along with theirs (myself included), i'm pushing the deadline for this back to late June. Let's say....JUNE 25th.
2) IF YOU ARE DONE, SEND ME YOUR STUFF!
...yep. aeroplaneaudio at gmail dot com. That's where it's at. Also, if you can avoid it, don't post the files on the board just yet. That way we won't be releasing a compilation of a whole bunch of things that people have already heard. This isn't meant as a slight toward the national steel dudes at all. I'm just sayin...
3) WE ALWAYS WELCOME MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN!
If you're interested in being on this comp but are jsut finding it now, worry not! jsut choose any OTC song that isn't already taken, post a message saying that you're gonna cover it, email me (see above), and you're in!
Keep the updates comin, folks. Where's everybody in the recording process now? I jsut got back from college, so now that i'm near my recording equipment i've been able to lay down a few basic tracks that i'm gonna add to tomorrow.
As for the animations, I'm really down with whatever. if you two watn to collaborate, that's great, and if we would rather have a bunch of animations by a few different people, then that's fine too.
Keep rockin.
-A

I know now that I won't be able to finish hilltop, for educational purposes. So it will be up for grabs.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I will be going to a summer program at SCAD this summer and I'm not sure if I'll be able to upload the back cover. I would've had it complete by now, but I can't until all tracks are finalized. If I cant upload it, we'll be waiting till the end of July.

oh man.. lil' dish did I mess up by putting a link up to it??? btw - National Steel is my band but I do the recordings myself (except for the bass usually) - but on the GT I played everything on it... I record our records in my basement on my used Dell desktop with a $200 acoustic, an electric guitar that won't stay in tune, a Roland keyboard my neighbor found in the garbage and a $60 microphone. Hardly hi-fi, but i just try to get the most out of what I got and maybe one day I'll get some nice gear and be able to make a really good record. anyway, sorry about jumping the gun man. PEACE!!!

Wow, I'm not sure if I can get this done. All my recording gear decided to shit the bed at once, and I got a new job so I've been busy as all getup. yeah, ok, i've gotten a bit lazy.
I didn't calculate that I would be gone for the World Cup on the due date.
But, honestly, i have no idea what kind of status everybody is at for this thing.
So, EVERYONE INVOLVED, give a short state of the union type thing as to where your cover is, can you realistically complete it, etc.
Because if we're back to having maybe 4 or 5 people that actually will ahve something done, it might be better jsut to ditch the "comp" idea.
Let's hear it.
I started trying to wrok out how I was going to to Grass Cannons. I think I can do it. I ahve the time and the equipment and everyhting. So there's no reason I couldn't have it done by the end of the summer.

To everyone that has asked me if I got their covers:
The answer is yes.
I have 5 total, and that includes mine.
This is what I have:
Green Typwriters by National Steel
I'm Not Feeling Human by The Magic Orchard
No Growing by sunjoe
A Place We Have Been To by Quetzal
Grass Cannons by me.
If we can get even five more from anybody then this will actually make a decently sized comp.
Remember, alls you gotta do is send them to me at aeroplaneaudio@gmail.com

If someone can suggest a rather simple song, one that could be learned and recorded quickly, and one that would sound nice when the only available instruments are a single acoustic guitar and my voice, I think I might actually be able to whip something up. I don't know what song to use, however, as most of their songs are full of other instruments.

covers should not have a whole lot to do with the original song... unless your goal is to mimic as much as possible. speed it up, slow it down, bang on your desk for the drums... the artists are generally more interested to hear what someone else views their song as than hearing what generally sounds like a lesser version of the original. I've been really pleased with all the ones i've heard off of this board... do something obscure... do "I Don't Know" from the pre-cubist castle demos... that would sound lovely just acoustic guitar and vocals... try it!
