I got it a few days ago, and read it the same night. I liked it a lot, except for the part where she tried to analyze the songs. She seemed to think about the lyrics in a totaly different way than me, and it was almost uncomfortable to read. But as for all the other bits, mostly band-history, it was great, a must-read for any fan of NMH/Itaots

I enjoyed it, especially the parts about the collective in general. It kind of makes me jealous that I am not part of a scene like the E6 collective...but i guess thats what the music is for!

Great read. It gave me a lot of perspective on the band from the inception, writing, recording, playing live, and utlimately the end. highly reccomeded.

Does it have alot in it that isn't already pretty well known?

I.E., could I look Neutral Milk Hotel on Google and get essentially the same information?

Much more than you could get from a simple internet search.

Internet articles probably already gave you a good understanding of the band. But the book will give you the details.

I my opinion there's nothing vital or shocking in the book. There's no major trials and tribulation or humor or anything that makes interesting reading. There just wasn't enough in there worth publishing a book. It could've just been condensed and made into a magazine article.
Amazing Band! Amazing Album! Amazing Sound! Dull biography

it wasn't considered a biography as much the driving force a\of that one album though, wasn't it?

like I can't really comment for mysef, more on what I've heard about it and stuff, I'm still waiting for my copy to be shipped, printing hasn't commenced here in Australia so I'm importing.

i liked reading robert's descriptions of the actual recording process. that guy's got some mind.

i found myself kind of disappointed when the book shifted from the history and details of the collective and went into nmh stuff.

I read it a month or two ago. I got it from a book shop in Australia.?

Anyway, I thought it was really good. Unlike everyone else here I didn't already know everything about NMH so I enjoyed the later part just as much as the start. It was cool that she mentioned the fanfare compilations. :) And I was interested in the bit when they found Jeremy Barnes. He's incredible. I think I'll read it again soon.

What other records has Robert produced? Any non-E6 bands?

I liked it, but I dunno. Maybe I'm not big on biographical books.

A podcast of the reading is up at Amazon.com, if you look up her book there. I also linked to it on my new blog, below.

doesn't mean it was printed in Australia, the same as Nick Zinner's photography book wasn't immediately printed down here, but a bookstore still had it when I asked for it, it just meant your bookstore had imported a stock of them. mine hadn't so mine is just taking a bit longer to order in because it's transatlantic.
