I was listening to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea recently and I noticed that, at the end of "Oh Comely," a voice can be heard in the right channel, saying "Holy shit..."

Has anybody else noticed this?

yep, this has been mentioned a few times. funny thing.. i just about never notice it. but once i did and it scared the crap outta me!
Legend has it, it was the recording engineer or somebody, watching the Braves game, and they just dramatically won the pennant.. or something like that. And I guess it picked up on the recording.

Before I bought it I read the lyrics and on one site they have it at the end of the song. So I always noticed it.

Another similar thing is how at the end of the album after "Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2" when he sings "And don't hate her when she gets up to leave" you can hear him put his guitar down, cough a little bit, and walk away.

I am glad you brought that up William, because that is one of the many great things that I find in the album. Listening to the album in it's entirety is this raw organic outpouring of spiritual release and cleansing of beauty found in a tragic event coming from the perspective of one person with a production that is aided by other people, but in the end it is just Jeff getting up and walking away from this amazing thing that he has created. to me it is the perfect ending.

Oh yeah and as the legend goes it is Robert Schneider who produced the ablum who is saying holy shit at the end of Oh Comely, as legend goes anyway.

i could rephrase everything pepe said in my own words, because i agree entirely, but instead i'll just nod enthusiasticly.

Oh Comely is one of those songs that gives me chill bumps every time I hear it. And yes it is a perfect ending to a song that lovely...

i agree it's cool how the last song ends and he gets up and walks away. but on the Jittery Joes cd, he does a great extended ending of the song.. and now i find myself wishing he would've done it on the album. when he's putting his guitar down, i'm like yelling, "no, Jeff, don't leave yet! do the ending part!" :)

This thread may be old... and you may know it all, But it's Scott at the end saying Holy shit. He was amazed that Jeff did that whole song in one go...Thats what I read anyway. In the NMH 33 1/3 book.

everybody probably knows by now but i think the story goes that jeff just plowed thru the whole song without stopping, when everyone thought it was a practice run. hence scott's "holy shit."

In the 33 1/3 it says that the version of this song that made it to the album was just to get levels set and stuff in the studio, but jeff just kept going and blew everyone away.

I always took it that *whoever* was shouting it in ecstasy after hearing it all in one go, so cheers for kinda confirming it.

...Hi by the way, I'm new here. x
