at my school there is this security guard and everyone knows him and hes this really friendly young guy. today he was on the front page of the sf chronicle because he is one of the 26 only known golden gate bridge suicide survivors out of 1,200. it was really weird reading about him, and apparently he is bipolar. i was really shocked, you know.

it wasnt like a mass suicide, if that's what you are asking. He means that 1200 people in total have jumped through out the years. Am i putting that right?

That anybody at all can survive the fall is absolutely amazing.

i read that article today. it's weird when you actually end up having a personal connection to stuff like that. what do you think about this proposed barrier thing?

everyone knows him as a narc, but he plays a drug dealer in some upcoming indie film.

the barrier sounds good i guess

before the article came out he gave a pamphlet for a suicide prevention walk and i was weirded out. but know i get it

Did they ask his permission to write about him? I'd be pretty pissed if my old history got splashed about the papers (not that I have a history worth talking about or anything!) I hadn't heard about a barrier, presumably it'd just make them go somewhere else to do it? Nets would be funny though, like the kind you get in circuses.

Theres a really interesting graphic too.

I heard the reason for no barrier is that the architech was short and wanted to see over the railing.

Wouldn't they just try to commit suicide in another way?

I'd suggest the Humber Bridge as a suitable alternative.

man, that's crazy. looking at that chart, some people jump onto land. what a bust!

i find it interesting that just about two and a half months after the bridge was built someone thought of taking their lives on it. that's a sad thought, really.

i guess the ones who jump on to land just really mean business? the thing they're not taking into consideration on this barrier thing is that there are eight or so bridges within twenty miles, including the considerably higher bay bridge (on which i've heard that people who jump from the upper deck get blown onto the lower deck and run over by the eastbound traffic, rather than gracefully meeting their demise in the water). but that tangent aside, if someone really wanted to jump off a bridge, even if they put up the barrier, there are seven other places without barriers. and plus, if someone was really determined, couldn't they just climb over the barrier?

Wow, I've had a great business plan! If they build this barrier I could set up a ladder hire company and just hire them out to the suicidal people. That'd be awesome.

Does the Golden Gate Bridge have lots of numbers for the samaritans and things around it? I just ask because I remember Beachy Head does (a popular cliff for suicide in the UK)
