ok. about this random play business...
alot of albums i've listened to lately or more in "concept" format, as in it tells a story. take the music tapes album (1st). it tells a story (in its own way). to take all those songs out of order just doesn't make any sense when youre listening to it. plus you might get stuck with the ocassional noise song. but i guess if yr washing the car or pulling weeds from the garden its alright.

an album is a collection of songs, yes, but in an order set forth by the band in most cases. the only thing i wouldn't mind listening to on random is a greatest hits collection, or a collection of b-sides, etc. those are collections in the true sense of the word. an album is an album, and if any band is worth their salt they put some quality time into it's sequencing. i love albums like aeroplane over the sea where each song flows into the next. but anyway, in a lot of cases artists sequence the album for certain reasons, whether we know them or not, and to me playing an album is like reading a book, you don't randomly read a chapter here and a chapter there, you read/listen from beginning to end.

I've never listened to an album on random play, I like concept albums, and I also like prog-rock. A CD is a collection of songs, an ALBUM is a story told in sonic chapters.

what does this all mean for mixtapes? mixtapes take the songs out of their original context and place them in the order you create. One quiet song might be right next to a loud ( I don't do this but others may be guilty)-this might not be intended by the band.
I like mixtapes because of this, yet i like continuity. I guess mixtapes are a special breed.

but see, the beauty of mixtapes is that you take songs out of their original context and meaning and place them in an order which expresses something of your own.

Most albums of course aren't 'concept' albums, but I get alot more out of albums that are more then just individual songs on a disk. I like when an album has a general meaning to it as most similar forms of entertainment do such as movies, and books. Whenever I listen to an album I always set aside enough time so I can listen to it the whole way through like I'm watching a movie. Maybe tonight I'll listen to The Lamb Lays Down On Broadway or something on random play though and see what happens.

I had a friend who created a tape of just 30 second or less, of his favorite lyrics in his favortie songs. The tape took forever for him to make -but it was really cool-we listened to it when it was done-each line or lines brought memeories of how great the whole song is..it was like listening to over 100 cds in only 90 minutes.
interesting experience if you havea lot of time to make it.

The idea was allegedly that each one would be a separate track and random play would shuffle the fragments throughout the album. It never happened, but the song is brilliantly weird - a whole album they could have made, condensed into one song.
that song is brilliant.
i think its the one that says: weren't you the guy that hit me in the eye?
haha GENIUS!!

i've given tmbg several listens over the years, and i admit some of the songs are fun and enjoyable, but i could never get through a whole album. novelty, that's what stands out the most about them to me, even though they're obviously talented.

actually, they are on seperate tracks. i think that the first pressing maybe didn't have that. but mine has the seperate tracks. i really like the concept. reminds me of those tv commercials like "sounds of the 70's" and stuff.

But the lyrics mean something.. That's the thing about TMBG.. The way the sing and sometimes it seems like they are just being silly, but if you really listen to the lyrics, they do mean something..
