That Jeff is our generations Syd Barrett? Both wrote brilliant songs. Put out a couple albums a piece, and just stopped due to some sort of mental breakdowns. Although Syd is a little bit more bothered in the head than Jeff its still eerie.

I was just thinking about that myself today! Really they're both crazy geniuses with pretty different styles, but they both have sort of a mysterious where-are-they-now thing going on.

ummm, all I know is that I just got Neutral Milks Hotel CD earier this week, and am checking them out now. Kind of into it, and when I saw the Syd Barrett reference, thought I'd register and put my 2 cents in.... although, shamefullly, I've actually got no 2 cents.
I'm a huge Syd Barrett fan, and if Neutral Milk guys can be anything close to Syd, well, I guess I'll be giving it enough chance (I hope)....
I tried searching the internet for these guys, but it seems like everything was updated last in 1998, so..... what the fuck? I'd like to learn more, especially from someone who might actually be a fan.....?

I just recently became a huge Syd Barrett fan in large part because I so often heard of Jeff refered to as the Syd Barrett of the '90's. I think it is a very accurate description, although from all accounts, I think Jeff completely sane, unlike Syd.

but come on, I want to say Jeff is the Syd Barrett of the 90's based on vague similarities.

FattyWompus, I would love to watch you be killed. If it was available on the internet I would watch it over and over and then seek out your killer and give him or her such a big high five you could hear it in hell.
On the less creepy side, yes, both guys are kind of eccentric, and yes, both of them write cryptic ass songs, Jeff probably less so. In the end, they're both good, but this debate is pointless. Does anyone else think Kayne West is the reincarnated Jimi Hendrix? I do. Debate...

Actually I figure Jeff for today's Robert Zimmerman.
Half Handed, if you can't appreciate NMH as being more than some low-fi Indie ditties... well whatever.

Among the other millions of musical things Barrett inspired --a complete list would be exhausting-- was the name of the great E6 band, The Apples.
In the Milk interview Robert said that Syd helped to inspired him to name his band The Apples:
"it's...an old Syd Barrett song, an old Pink Floyd song: "Apples and Oranges." Not obvious, like "Baby Lemonade." But there's the specific reference."
RS confirmed this in the Hip Online interview:
"One late night Will and I were listening to a Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd bootleg and "Apples and Oranges" came on and I was trying to think of a name for the band I wanted to start, and I said "That's it! The Apples!" and Will said "That's it!" and that was it for the name..."
Having written that, I can understand someone making a comparison but the fact is that each artist is an individual and not some other artist transported through time. Syd Barrett was Syd Barrett (he eventually dropped the Syd persona) and Jeff is just good ol' Jeff.
