I vote for "Isn't It Nice" from Aldhils. That song is beautiful.

Well, Of Montreal's entire corpus is underrated. But here's something I never hear talked about:

"The Hopeless Opus"- Come on, it's brilliant!
Also, like evrything on early 4-tracks and "Bird Who Continues..."

a little off-topic but sometimes 'underrated' makes me think of b-sides/rarities/etc. and i remembered how Blur would play the random show only performing b-sides for the whole set. i thought this was such a cool idea, esp considering how many great b-sides they have/had.

but of montreal's amassed quite a few 'oddities' as well and if they were to play a show with the set only consisting of songs like:

katie and caroline
the pimps are simpering
there's nothing wrong with hating rock critics
joseph and alexander
nero no daisuki
cast in the haze
making time (they used to do this a good bit and it ruled!)
girl from nyc
the you i created
(hitler)
hopeless opus (anyone?)
etc etc

wouldn't it be nice?

i don't know, petite drama clearly has gotten much love from certain folks over the years. aldhils has gotten more respect as of late but used to be more of the gopher album in terms of being unfairly knocked about. or big oil (depending on who you're asking).

hopeless opus seems like it's always been divided amongst fans. why that is i don't really know b/c i think it's incredible. do people really not like it b/c it's too long and/or indulgent in their eyes/ears? i think it stands on its own in the OM canon or even if it was the one OM song someone made note of in the history of 21st century music. so yeah perhaps imo that is the most underrated OM song.

I have the Coquelicot vinyl and I haven't pulled it out in awhile, but doesn't Hopeless Opus have its own side? I prefer that to the CD...because the song that immediately precedes it is so beautiful that it really should be the END.

But I like the Hopeless Opus on its own, if I'm in the mood for it, if only because it's so un-Of Montreal...not tight and short and poppy, but loose and meandering and long.

y something nice about "Isn't It Nice," which I think is my favorite song on Aldhils Arboretum and which I've never seen anyone mention anything about specificall.

"specifcally," that is

The Sad Witch

Hitler is their most important track.
:P
I really wanted to get it so that it plays in the background of a website I 'made*', but I'm too stupid to do things like that.

Hi.

On one post, I remember saying that was my least favorite song on Adhils. So, it has been talked about ;)

"No need to throw your toys out of the pram..."

Oh, please. I was having a bit of fun w/ you and your snarky remarkys.

"You're the music critic, why don't you tell us what their most important track is?"

R U BEING SNARKY AGAIN??? The greatness of "Isn't It Nice" is in the chorus. It just keeps going and getting more beautiful as it goes.

I would say Hopeless Opus but it seems that it's not so underrated after all, so I'm going to go with with City Bird.

Also, half-handed! "Less disciplined?" :o

I don't agree w/ you that Satanic Panic and Sunlandic Twins are less disciplined!

dustin hoffman gets a bath (most early fourtrack), and no one talks about adhils much , and cherry peel is to sweet not too talk about,

it's interesting to me that it starts out w/ weird chord changes sort of like something off of a petite tragedy but then hits you over the head w/ that fairly straightforward but insanely catchy chorus like you mentioned. i'm also quite fond of the instrumental middle section, w/ the delayed slide guitars scratching each other's backs in the thick of the woods. it's REALLY easy to picture yourself walking/driving down a country road under a full moon...just amazing

Maybe you mean `subtle`as oppposed to `stand-out`?

In that case, I think that `It`s Just So`, which frequently tends to escape my consciousness somewhere near the end of the Coquelicot album, is the best.

Whenever I throw on that album, I always remind myself to focus especially when that song comes up, because it`s like for a few seconds the whole concept is dropped and things get really open, first-person and intimate...

It`s really straightforward lyrically, as well. It seems to be about the true, spiritual love between an inexperienced, sensitive young lad and the (somewhat distant?) object of his affections... it doesn`t matter why or how he came to love this person, and all that matters is that he really really does love her/him/it. It feels so confessional and raw, like all he wants to do is say it to this person, but at the same time, the solo piano makes him sound more alone than ever... I suppose because he doesn`t know how to interpret the relationship... or maybe he doesn`t know how to interpret any relationship?

Anyway, I think that this was when I first realized that this was a band/songwriter capable of articulating very human and special dramas in a very human and special way.

it's funny b/c some people on the board love coquelicot the best (myself included) but there's a lot people who pick albums like gay parade over it in a heartbeat. songs like 'it's just so' can get lost in the shuffle on such a sprawling record like coquelicot but i think if it was on the gay parade it'd stand out more.

to me there are so many moments like this on coquelicot that tend to get overlooked.. strangely making this OM's most 'underrated' album in a sense. b/c it's not the majority's favorite album amongst fans (or critics even) that's for sure. i've just always found that interesting. it's at once perfect for people w/ short attention spans but also people who enjoy epics.. and yet it's so much to handle for a lot of folks it seems like many of its most mindblowing features don't get the celebratory reaction i'd expect them to get.
