you should check out early of montreal (bedside drama and cherry peel)
essex green, and ladybug transistor.
those are the bands that sound the most like pedro the lion and bright eyes. you should really check out all of the e6 bands, especially olivia tremor control and circulatory system, although i dont know how much you will like them

If you're into that kind of thing, E6 may not have a whole lot to offer really. Firstly, I can't think of a single band (including NMH) that would define itself (or be defined by) whether it was "acoustic" or not. Secondly, I feel that NMH is one of a kind in the E6 world. They make a lot of sense juxtaposed with the Olivia Tremor Control and the Gerbils for example, but there really isn't a parallel or similar band.
If you are interested in a more folk-oriented style, check out Summer Hymns' first album Voice Brother and Sister. Keep in mind, it's no more "acoustic" (I cringe typing that, even in quotes!) than NMH's music, but there is a psychedelic folk sound to it. Also, there was an E6 label, but almost all of the E6 music is not on it. NMH is on Merge, and Olivia Tremor Control have been on a number of labels. If I am not mistaken, Summer Hymns are on Misra. I really wouldn't pay attention to record labels regarding E6 (now formerly E6, because the collective is defunct even if many of the bands aren't) because not only are they a poor guide to a group of artists that transcended record labels and genres, but you will not even necessarily find similar E6 groups on the same labels.
There isn't an E6 band that sounds remotely like Pedro the Lion or Bright Eyes. In fact, it's surprising for me to see them and NMH in the same sentence except that they are all three extremely popular with fans of indie music. Interestingly though, some E6-related musicians played on Bright Eyes' Letting Off the Happiness, but I haven't heard that yet to know how incongruous (or not) it is.

Almost all of Cherry Peel is based on acoustic guitar... besides for that you could probably put together a nice comp of acoustic based E6 songs but like was said above, none of the E6 bands are what I would call "acoustic" groups... at the same time, you wouldn't call The Beatles an acoustic group but some of their best songs were acoustic based...

Oh man, I love Bright Eyes! Oh wait, no I don't and neither should anyone who's mother didn't mate with a brain-dead elephant. Unfortunately there are many women out there who take advantage of these poor animals and thus allow Bright Eyes to continue making the worst music ever.

It's not ridiculous to compare Bright Eyes and Neutral Milk Hotel... acoustic guitars, intense and unique vocals, strong focus on the lyrics, unusual additional instrumentation... While it has nothing to do with e6, I would check out some antifolk. Daniel Johnston (Songs of Pain, It's Spooky, Continued Story), Moldy Peaches (self titled, NOT the rarities one), early Beck (One Foot in the Grave, any early 7" songs or tapes you can find, maybe Mellow Gold) would be good starting places.

I think it kinda is. The unique vocals are unique (except for copiers who came after in both cases) and that point alone makes them difficult to compare. That's like saying that Thom Yorke and Morrissey both have distinctive styles of singing and therefore have a common artistic thread. Acoustic guitars? I think John Mayer plays those too sometimes. So have a great many artists in the history of rock (and almost all of them if we're talking folk music). Most importantly, Bright Eyes is emo-tinged (I actually strongly disagree with people who say Conor is really emo though) while NMH are psych-tinged, and those couldn't be much further apart. They are both folk-oriented but then so is Bob Dylan and Devendra Banhart ... and I've just named four folk artists that sound nothing alike.

Yeah, I'd agree with this post, except that Early 4-Track Recordings is much more stripped down than anything NMH or Bright Eyes have ever done. Kevin Barnes makes them seem like chamber pop compared to his work on that album. That said, I think what I'm taking issue with is the original poster unintentionally asking the wrong question rather than you giving the wrong answer.

its not genre stratifiying its just annoying when terms get misused because this eventually leads to the erosion of any of the meaning the word once had. I.e screamo going from describing bands like heroin, the killers etc. to shit like my chemical romance.
plus everyone knows now its about super-sub-genres.

I agree. I mean, some people are a bit snobby about genres, but if you don't like that, you probably just shouldn't deal in genres. It gets annoying when people don't use genres accurately, so I just listen to what the snobbiest and most discerning people have to say about genres and work down from there. There is nothing worse than genres not meaning anything, and if you disagree with that statement, just call everything "rock" and "pop" and "jazz" and leave the rest to the people who do care about the difference between "neo-folk" and "contemporary folk" and "singer songwriter."

I'm saying that all those things COMBINED make them comparable. Of course any one of those individually doesn't mean squat. I'm also not saying that they are basically the same. Just that they have similar elements, and many of the elements that might attract a person to one could attract him or her to the other and that fact shouldn't be as beyond belief as some make it seem.

I can't bear talking about genres because I really don't know what they mean :( I even hate the plain ones like 'rock' and 'pop' because they include so much music I don't like, and I don't know what the smaller genres mean :( Someone should write an idiot's guide to music genres for me... I think my least favourite question to be asked is 'what kind of music do you listen to?'
But I know what NeutralMilkMaid (and that is a damn fine name!) means so thats the importand thing! :P But Neutral Milk Hotel have a really unique sound so I don't know who sounds like them. For today I'll just throw Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and The Mountain Goats into the wind because I like them both for similar reasons that I like NMH even though they don't sound like them. :D

has anyone thought for a second that typewriters is wrong? who the hell would call current 93 neo-folk? if you're gonna stratify genres, get it right. neo implies a resurgence
not saying that neutralmilkwhatever is right either. classifying things is never a precise science
