Hey, Kids. I just got introduced to Of Montreal. I love them. I was wondering if any of you would be willing to suggest a "best of" list. There's just so much to get-- I can't afford it. A good cross-section from all the albums would help. Thanks!

We have the last three albums and Gay Parade and Coquelicot (though I haven't listened to all of Coquelicot yet!). Anyway, my top five would be all Sunlandic songs:
1. The Party's Crashing Us
2. Every Day Feels Like Sunday
3. So Begins Our Alabee
4. Requiem for O.M.M.2
5. Forecast Fascist Futre

i wonder if someone would like to add up the total # of officially released OM songs..
not counting things 2x like demos or alt versions (ie will you let me into your dreams, julie the mouse, ah my kitten, etc).
it's crazy when you think about how many perfect songs they have in their canon...just spilling over with brilliance like the stars in the sky :)

OK, but one point: you say that the early stuff, in particular, is sincere. Do you really find the newer music less sincere?

Seriously, just buy their albums. It's not about the songs, but rather the full experience. A couple of top 25s isn't going to help you understand or enjoy Of Montreal very well.

WHAT?! I mean, what are you waiting for? How could you not have listened to it all -- it's a unit, not a collection of assorted tracks. It's occasionally a bit over the top and takes more patience than it should, but at it's best moments, it's some of Of Montreal's best work.

I agree, and why download assorted tracks when you'll get so much more enjoyment out of listening to the whole concept. Hearing about Nickee Coco isn't going to be as fun or interesting if you haven't met the other characters before her. In my opinion Of Montreal would sound very strange and half-baked if you didn't listen to whole albums, with the only possible exceptions being Satanic Panic in the Attic and Adhils Aboretum.
At alldirect.com, you can get their albums for $6.50-11 NEW (plus cheap shipping), so there really isn't much of an excuse not to support Kevin and the record label by buying the albums. I'm sure you spend more than that a month on other much less important things.

amen. especially since this album may take a few listens before it inevitably takes over that "favorite of montreal album" title. isn't tim ellison a music cricket too? i'll say i'm baffled that sunlandic could get that many songs on a favorites list, but i won't get into all that again.

There's no way I could choose 25, its hard enough choosing 10 :P I put mine alphabetically because there's no way I could choose one over another, I already feel bad for the ones I missed out, next time I put on an Of Montreal CD I'll be thinking 'oh damn this should have been on my list!' as it is ;)
And for the record, I for one really enjoyed Sunlandic Twins :D
Disconnect the Dots
Fun Loving Nun
Good Morning Mr. Edminton
I Was A Landscape in your Dreams
Jennifer Louise
My Favourite Boxer
Nickee Coco and the Invisible Tree
Rapture Rapes the Muses

when i first listened to sunlandic twins, i was so blown away, i could only listen to the first 3 or 4 songs at first. then slowly made my way through the whole thing. it was just too much. and, yes, half-handed, it has been established that it "takes all kinds", so you needn't comment on this.

You know I am not talking about whether you like a record or not, but your attitude toward those who don't share your dislike. Calling my question dumb is rude, and it doesn't answer the question.
I am a new Of Montreal fan, and it took me a long time to even want to post on this board becasue people like you are so self-righteous about old Of Montreal and how great it is compared to the new, when really all I have heard is the new, and I love it very much. Go ahead and be rude to me, though. Be self-righteous. It's your shit, not mine.

I agree with whoever said that Of Montreal is more about albums than songs... at least, I think somebody said that.
But I have favorites from each album, especially:
That country song from 4-track masters
Mary When you`re Loved Like You Are
On The Drive Home
Happy Yellow Bumblebee
Jacques Lemure
In The Army Kid
Good Morning Mr. Edminton
Jennifer Louise
Charlie and Freddy
Lysergic Bliss
Family Nouveau

the first time i saw of montreal they did sleeping in the beetle bug about 1/2 through the set and it was at that moment that i realized they were my favorite band. watching kevin's wizard-like command of the guitar (not to mention andy's heavenly solo-ing) did something to confirm what i had witnessed in the songs beforehand was in fact amazing and real, and formed a bridge to the 2nd half of the set that i gladly walked through and smiled upon the world with. it was also quite amazing that the show was essentially in a basement art space with probably no more than 25 people there. oh look how they've grown!

I love EVERY song on The Gay Parade and Cherry Peel, so this is hard, but I'll try. Don't take it seriously:
Tim I Wish You Were Born a Girl
Dustin Hoffman Offers Lame Possible Explanation for Missing Bathtub
Old Familiar Way
Penelope
I Was Watching Your Eyes
Lysergic Bliss
Dustin Hoffman Quits Bathroom and Climbs a Tree
Jennifer Louise
You Are an Airplane
Your Magic Is Working
City Bird
Fun Loving Nun
When You're Loved Like You Are
Good Morning Mr. Edminton
Let's Go for a Walk
An Introduction for Isabell
Dustin Hoffman's Wife Comes Home
Dustin Hoffman's Wife Calls in Detective to Dust for Porcelain Particles on Dustin Hoffman's Tongue
Dustin Hoffman Thinks About Eating the Soap
Jaques Lamure
Butterscotching Mr. Lynn
Let's Do Everything for the First Time Forever
I Can't Stop Your Memory
A Collection of Poems About Water
Baby
Bah. A lot of tracks from Cherry Peel and The Gay Parade are missing from this list. Yet, these are some of my favorites. Albums like The Bedside Drama, Then Who Will Protect Big Oil and Horse & Elephant Eatery needs further investigation. I've listened through them, but not enough. I need some time.
Edit: Oh my god, Of Montreal is such a great band. I've listened to the other albums, and I find these tracks breathtaking too:
Spoonful of Sugar
Cast in the Haze
Sing You a Love You Song
When a Man Is in Love with a Man
Panda Bear
