View Full Version : Sister/Companion Songs

So, I was listeing to the bootleg of Jeff - Live At Aquarius Records (1996/7/4) where he mentions when he plays "Oh Sister" and says "It kinda goes along with the first song" (i.e. "Oh Comely", the first song in the set and of course says "Although it probably won't ever, I'm not sure if it will ever come out or not" -- which it sadly did not, but that's beside whatever point I'm trying to make). And then at when he plays "My Dreamgirl Don't Exist" he says "It's a companion to another song ... it probably won't ever come out either." And he continues to talk about how he writes long songs that get cut up into other songs.

So, anyway, it got me thinking about his "companion songs" and now I'm trying to make all the connections and possibly (for myself) making a mix of them, in order or close proximity, or whatever, so the connections are clearer - like movements.

What are all the sister/companion songs and/or connections? What versions do you think would work best beside one another?

Thanks for any thoughts/input. Huzzah.

if "it probably won't ever come out", we probably don't have it. i don't recall the song 'dreamgirl' either, i'd have to go back and take a look.

No, no. When he says "It probably won't ever come out" he's referring to the song he's about to play, i.e. "My Dreamgirl Don't Exist."

Here you go: My Dreamgirl Don't Exist (http://knerd.com/~sashwap/NeutralMilkHotel-MyDreamgirl.mp3) via Sashwap (http://knerd.com/~sashwap/).

Three Peaches, Oh Comely, and Oh Sister are companions.

Ghost and Dreamgirl both have "she goes and now she knows she will never be afraid" in them.

hmmm...

^ It's got a similar tune, especially during the parts where he howls... the always seemed pretty clearly connected to me.

Why thank you very much. It's a name, as for many that have origins in long, mostly uninteresting stories, I've used for years with numerous sites/usernames/monikers/etc. And I also find spiritualdishwasher endlessly interesting/amusing. Huzzah.

i'm pretty sure i disagree with "three peaches" being a comapnion to those other songs, but will think about it

i don't think "three peaches" counts, mostly because lyrically it seems totally different. most of the companion songs share themes/lyrics. also, all the aeroplane ones are either on aeroplane or unreleased.

also, i don't see much resemblence in the melody.

Dreamgirl goes with Ghost and Holland, 1945. I also see a connection to the She Did A Lot Of Acid suite (with Unknown and Rubby Bulbs) but that might just be in my head.
