i came on today and there's 5 or 6 posts about covers or remixes and whatnot, what gives? it's just silly, because covering Aeroplane is like covering the beatles, it just can't rightfully be done. please stop!

actually, the only 'love how you love me' cover of jeff's that i like is the one from the 2001 show, but i think that's more because of the circumstances. and the gerbils cover is not nearly as good as the original. nice, well-founded assumptions though...

No.

If people want to cover NMH, they will cover NMH. And guess what? You don't have to listen to it!

Which leads me to ask: Have you listened to any of the covers posted here? If not, then you have NO right to pass judgement.

As someone who participated (The Homeville Circle -Engine), I can say that I participated 1.) because I wanted to see if I could figure out how to make the song my own, sort of like a puzzle and 2.) because I like that song and it's fun to play. Obviously nobody did this to get famous off of it, it was just some people having fun with songs they like, as you might do if you were sitting around with some musician friends.

Besides, if people didn't play other peoples songs, we wouldn't have entire genres like classical, american folk or blues;) It's just fun to add your own take to something.

Hmm, this isn't so much about the fanfare thing as the posting of random musicians covering the songs.

i have actually visited that site a couple times. and i thought that post on youaintnopicasso with a bunch of indies-covering-hits was pretty neat.

but i'm just the kind of person that thinks great things shouldn't be messed with, i guess. when it's a fan, like the people here, doing a tribute, that's one thing. but when a band like rilo kiley covers 'in the aeroplane over the sea' it's kinda annoying sometimes. to each his own i guess. i'm also the kind of person that thinks stopping a good song mid-way through is sacrilege. i guess it's kinda dumb.

i'm glad the two of you could finally agree on something (Rilo Kiley's annoyingness)

however, i gotta say i love em. and i'd still love them even if they became a NMH cover band.

and Rilo Kiley has been around since the 90s and have covered "aeroplane" a grand total of one time.. back in 2002.
i think a better example for flockey to have used would've been the Faint doing Holland recently.

What exactly qualifies you to make the determination that "it can't be rightfully done"? As one of many musicians on this board I resent your attempt to curb our creative freedom to play anything that we want to play. Any musician can play any song they'd like to play, no matter who wrote it, and play it in his/her own style. You may not like it, that's certainly your perogative, but it's doesn't mean musicians should stop playing songs and arrangements that they like.

haha, rk had a few good songs, and jenny lewis, well... what can i say.

vertigothom, i didn't really read that. i was just stating my opinion anyway, i don't know why everyone's all offended. i think i clarified myself enough by now. but you should probably take a breather anyway, everything's gonna be alright.

Whoa sweet I love Rilo Kiley. They're in my top 5 favorite bands. I wanna hear this Aeroplane cover! Can anybody hook me up with a link?

Although Rilo Kiley isn't that great, their big boost is that they have Pinsky from "Salute Your Shorts." If Donkey Lips was in New Found Glory I wouldn't seizure at every viewing of their music video.

That's the great thing about Rilo Killey: there's an obscure child star for everyone.

Wow, that was my favorite episode of Perfect Strangers ever! Balkey had this whole wacky bowling routine from his home country, but it totally worked, and they won the tournament!!!

In related news, my Mom cried over the episode where Balkey's Grandma died.
