I really want to do a fanfare, or tribute or whatever for of montreal, but i want there to be other people who are willing to do it too. if it does materialize, i'd like to do "you are an airplane" with my band

ok, if we're gonna do this, i would like someone else to take up the responsibility of mixing and producing the end product, though, because i'm terrible at that kind of stuff. :D

mebee we could help. i'll pose it to my husband/bandmate and see what song he'd want to do. also you have to buy us a new computer if we are to produce/mix/whatever it!

i've demo-ed an acoustic/different version of disconnect the dots. i could volunteer this at some point.

a tribute sounds like a cool idea, although it'd be fun enough to just post some mp3s at some point.. unless someone really wants to take on a bigger production, which works too ;)

I am in for Requiem For OMM2 or Family Nouveau. My band's name is National Steel and we are an indie pop band in NYC.

I think I'm going to try my hand at Penelope. I could be cool and do something more obscure, but this is the song that got me into of Montreal, so it's always had a special place in my heart. Plus it's one of the most fun songs ever written. Plus I'm not cool.

count me in for "Dustin Hoffman Offers Lame Possible Explanation For Missing Bathtub" ... or "There Is Nothing Wrong With Hating Rock Critics".
I play dums guitar bass and keys and would fill in gladly on anyone else's recording if needed.
I also know pro-tools.

it is seemingly chaotic. it was one of those ideas that came to me, and looked better in my mind than on paper. however, i still think it'd be really cool to have everyone make their cover song, and then archive it on some random site, so everyone could hear.

This is not that hard to do. It just takes a couple of people to put in the final effort once all the recording is done. I have a lot of software and have released a cd which I self-produced so I could master the record and produce a master copy which someone else could volunteer to duplicate. We would also need someone to volunteer to design the cover and back...

If anyone wants to seriously volunteer to do any of these lets get it together... we would have a little while anyway because it seems most people still have to record their tunes (me included)...

...the mastering of the cd will take the most work so if someone out there can also do this kind of thing maybe we could split the tracks betweeen us... maybe one person could do the front cover and one do the back... let's split the work up so nobody is swamped...

Everybody get to work on your songs for the OM tribute... We will be putting up a gmail address to send your finished mp3s to... Since I will be doing basic mastering and leveling I will need basic info on your recordings so when you send in your mp3 (at least 192kbps or higher if possible) please include what you used to record it (software program, hard-disk recorder, etc??) and whether or not you performed any self-mastering on the track... NOW GET TO WORK!!!!

ps... we need a volunteer to design a cover and back
pps... as the submissions are recieved we will post the up-to-date track listing

NOTICE TO EVERYONE SUBMITTING SONGS FOR THE TRIBUTE:

ALL SUBMISSIONS ARE TO BE SENT TO:

OMTRIBUTE@GMAIL.COM

Please send wav files if at all possible as it will make the sound qualitry of the finished product alot better but if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO send an mp3 please encode it to 320kbps (or as high as possible)... absolutely nothing under 128kbps is gonna work because your song WILL sound sonically inferior to the rest of the songs and it won't provide a pleasant listening experience or a fair representation of your recording... We will post an up-to-date track listing as the submissions come in...

IMPORTANT:
Please include whatever information you can about how you recorded the song (i.e. software, hard-disk recorder, etc...) as it will help me in mastering the material... Also include how you want the song to be credited (i.e. your "stage name" or your band's name whatever), your location, and your website address... we can include these in the insert or into a .txt file with downloads.

LET'S HAVE FUN... I THINK ITS GONNA BE REALLY COOL...

oh, by the way, i'm sure that there's a bunch of artists that would want to do the cover... so what i was thinking was that maybe we can have a collective effort from all of the artists that want to have a part in the cover/cd art. we can combine each of our individual pictures to make the whole cover. if we have everyone submit their own pictures onto the gmail account, we can have someone put the whole picture together. if this is at all confusing, send me a message.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked it... when I play it by myself with my acoustic I usually play it regular speed with a loud vocal (especially during the bridge at the end) but I wanted to do it differently for the tribute and it was a big challenge to sing so softly - I normally have a very loud slightly weathered and slightly gravelly-type voice... I wish I'd sung it better (or at least took a little more time)...

Thanks again guys,

Mike

Maybe this is a way to save money in spreading this thing around...

Instead of one person paying for blank cds and then burning them and mailing them out... How about we make the mp3s available on a GMail account or Soulseek or as a torrent... Then everyone who wants it can burn it themselves... As for the cover we need 1 or 2 volunteers to maybe print out a bunch of them and then either send them or just design one that can be scanned or emailed to anyone who burns the cd... you could then choose to print it out yourself on whatever kind of paper you choose and not one person is being stuck with the expense... We could include the cover and back as a jpeg in the folder that holds the mp3s...

What do you guys think?? This way it reduces (if not eliminates) real expense and yet you can still have the physical "product" making it a tangible experience...

Mike Hattem

gudhumer
09-06-2005, 04:09 PM
that's not a bad idea. i still think someone should also volunteer to do an actual CD image, and put the file up online, so if the individual wants to burn the cd off with a cool picture to print out and stick to the CD itself, they can.

I'd also like to send a finalized copy to the band members. So we should see what someone like B.P. thinks of this (its too bad he hasn't posted anything on this thread).

this was posted in the new flagpole in athens. you would have to cover a song from the kindercore days but thought you might like to know about it.

"Gotta Pay The Tribute: Longtime indie-pop fanatic Darren Cloutier has started a free MP3 label named Bunch of Beatniks and is looking for bands to contribute to his latest project. Cloutier - self-proclaimed No. 1 fan of the late Masters of the Hemisphere and former member of band The Princeton Reverbs Colonial - is putting together a tribute to the departed Athens label Kindercore Records. Kindercore stands alone as the most successful record label to ever come out of Athens, and the only requirement for contributing bands is that the songs they cover must have actually been put out on a Kindercore release, and not be simply from a band that had an association with Kindercore. As with the other releases, which are all free and available online, the tribute will come complete with exclusive artwork and available to be assembled as a complete package. Currently the label is hosting releases by Athens bands Welterweight, The Stones and Masters Of The Hemisphere, with upcoming releases from Je Suis France and Monocles available soon. All songs must be submitted to the label by Tuesday, Sept. 27, as the comp will be released in early October. Get all the info on what more to do at bunchofbeatniks.blogspot.com or contact Cloutier directly at bunchofbeatniks@gmail.com"

yeah, that would be really cool... but being a tribute why don't we make the artwork somebody's tribute to David :) Anybody out there do a mean David Barnes impersonation??

On his website he offers to do a drawing of you from a picture you send him for like $100 or $125... that's kinda cool - its some money but it'd be cool to have an original DB drawing of yourself... If we had the money I'd have him do everybody in my band for our EP cover but that would probably be the whole record's budget right there :)

i think you should still make the cover look super sweet. it will matter if we post the image on the mp3 sharing site, so people can see the cover art that is intended for the tribute. besides, i still want to burn a copy or two with the art, and having it look awesome would make me super happy.

I finished my cover of Joseph and Alexander. it's all classical guitar and ukuleles with a little bit of melodica. I'll get it posted when I get a moment but I'm kind of busy but I'll make some time to post it.

I am in a hardcore mellotron phase right now... especially in acoustic songs... I have mellotron patches which I use with the sampler in REASON and it sounds great... I used it on my cover of Requiem For OMM2... If you don't know what a mellotron is... listen to the intro to Strawberry Fields Forever and THAT'S a MELLOTRON... It's basically an organ but each key triggers an actual tape recording sample of either horns, strings, flutes, or voices (the original mellotron only had those 4 sounds)... somebody called it "the original sampler"... The flute sounds are gorgeous... Okay I am done rambling....

for me my WMP wouldn't even play it... it said I didn't have the codec but I have so many codecs I rarely get that message and I definitely shouldn't for a .wav file since I use them all the time when Im recording and mixing... my guess is that something went wrong because you have a wav file thats only 4 megabytes (that SHOULD be less than a minute long - an average wav of 4 minutes is around 30-40 meg).. Your file IF ITS THE WHOLE SONG is the size of an mp3 with a wav extension.... none of this matters just redo the mixdown and convert it to mp3 and resend it...

nov 3rd sounds good.. gives us about 5 weeks.

whoever is organizing this should make a list of the people doing the tracks just so there won't be a clusterfuck of confusion. or if anyone has time to browse through this thread and write down each person's song.. just a thought.

Before I can get mine done, I need to buy a microphone and one of those external hard drive things. I'll try, but no guarantee.

auxilliaryoctopus, I'm really looking forward to your cover, though.

I don't know about the title, auxoct.
I like the ": A Tribute to Of Montreal" part of it.
maybe something a bit spicier.
Like "Raptor Apes Cabooses"...
for example.;)
