View Full Version : Jeff Mangum considered playing Intonation?

From the 2nd to last paragraph:
Among the major disappointments Reed suffered in compiling the bill was losing the Arcade Fire to Lollapalooza, having the Fiery Furnaces cancel their tour, the pairing of De La Soul and MF Doom (which would have made the welcome addition of some hip-hop) demanding too much money, and a glimmer of interest from the legendary leader of Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Mangum, evaporating.
If this article is to believed, then Jeff was possibly considering playing the Intonation Music Festival a week or two ago. I don't know if he ever really considered it but then again, I guess it's another positive sign and yet another instance of recent life in the Neutral Milk Hotel camp....

haha, if your the person who reunites NMH, I'll give you a cookie. A good cookie too.
You could do it how SNL tried to reunite the Beatles that one time. Offer Jeff like $50 to reunite...
that's right. that almost worked.

I'm hoping he/they play tomorrow night in NYC with the Olivia Tremor Control!

De La Soul played a show at my college years ago (when I was there). I was really excited to see them, and they put on such a terrible show that I left halfway through it.

I'm gonna be there and I really think it couldhappen. At least, the odds of it happening that night are about as high as they've been in some time. Consider:
1) Jeff reportedly lives in Brooklyn
2) Jeff used to play in the Olivia Tremor Control. Some of his closest friends are in the band.
3) The last time Jeff played live, it was with the Tall Dwarfs, one of the opening bands.
4) The other opening band is A Hawk and a Handsaw, which is Jermey Barnes, NMH dummer's band.
5) Jeff played on A Hawk And A Handsaw's last album
6) Assuming Jeff is at the show, all 4 members of NMH will be in the same building (Scott and Julian are playing with OTC)
7) There have been a lot more signs of life from Jeff recently (selling guitars, requesting his albums be reissued, possibly considered playing Intonation)
Not that I'm expecting anything (i'm not) but if it DID happen, I wouldn't be suprised.
I've also had this reoccouring dream where I'm at Jeff's first show back. Since I'll be there in NYC tomorrow night.....
I'm gonna stop this here cause it's starting to sound stalkerish....

I'm with Mr. BP Helium. The dude's gonna be on stage, having fun. If he plays drums, great. If he picks up a guitar for an "Opera House" encore, awesome. If he sings during "I Have Been Folated", holy moly.
If he does a "Two Headed Boy" encore, I will cry and probably $hit myself.

I don't see why Jeff would do an encore at the Olivia Tremor Control show.
This is amazing though. We have it confirmed by B.P. "the pulse of Elephant 6" Helium that Jeff will be in the house, and he gives us high odds that he will be on stage. DANG! Not to mention, it's already pretty much the best OTC lineup of history. DOUBLE DANG!
I don't even get to go and I'm excited. I demand someone post about this the minute they get home. You owe it to us who have to live in Ohio.

I'll be home about 2 hours after the show, I'll post what happens then.
As excited as I am at the possiblity of Jeff involvment, I think it's important that we all remember that three totally awesome bands ARE indeed playing. I mean, it would be cool if Jeff shows up, but I'm going to this thing 100% for OTC.

On the topic of that show:
Hopefully, I'll be off work in time to get into the city for it.
On the topic of De La Soul, whose live show somebody dissed on this thread:
I don't know about two years ago, but I saw them a month ago and they put on an incredible show. The Roots were headlining and De La Soul and MF DOOM stole the bill from them.

I agree with you 100%.
Olivia is one of my favorite bands.
Neutral Milk is my favorite band.
I am psyched to see one of my favorite bands play.
I am psyched at the possibility of seeing my favorite band play.

Maybe I saw them on an off night. And it was like eight years ago. It was when Stakes is High came out. It was an outdoor show, but it was on campus and a totally small, intimate setting. First they took about an hour and a half to come on stage after the opening acts had finished. Then they were just putting on a mediocre set and pausing for five minutes between every song to preach about staying in school and warning us not to become rappers. After about a half hour, people just started walking away.
This was the year after Digital Underground, another rap group fav of mine (though one admittedly more in the guilty pleasure category than De La) performed a horrible set on campus. They would rap about one verse of a song and then tell the DJ to 'cut it up' and it would be five minutes of record scratching. Then halfway through 'Freaks of the Industry', some dancers/strippers started shaking it on stage, and one of the subordinate rappers took off one of the dancer's tops and then the school officials freaked out and shut down the concert.
Not that these stories have anything to do with Jeff's possible involvement at the OTC show. Sorry to hijack the thread.

You know, after seeing him tonight, I don't think he will. I think NMH is over. He may do other stuff, but I don't think we'll ever see NMH again.

Well, I hope you're not right. I've spent all night listening to him, and I have to see him play atleast one time before I die.

How did the show go? it was last night, right? (writing this on Aug 3).
As I said, I was in NY last week, & I kinda wanted to stay for the OTC show (as I'd missed BJM AND Casper & the Cookies) but I needed to get home & pay my bills and all...

i'm utterly shocked.
i had been planning on going to this otc show since it was announced. i had my tickets.
but my summer plans got a little messed up and so i've since been away, and sold the tickets.
i'm so happy and mad all at the same time.
