Anyone else sick of the ebay auctions selling NMH bootlegs?

Here is a listing I just created. Let me know if you have any more sites to add to the list, I'll update the listing with them. Please, only websites, I don't want to point people to torrent sites, slsk, or anywhere else.

I plan to keep renewing the listing until people stop bidding on the bootlegs.

good work. when i was still into smashing pumpkins trading, every now and then an auction popped up where some idiot had downloaded for instance everything here: http://rspaa.niluje.net/data/ , or from it's predecessor. Bidding then was boosted to huge amounts, but nobody bought anything. Oh, and for people interested in lossless, non-mp3 sourced smashing pumpkins shows: http://www.westernavenue.net/media/

Thank you for doing that. That always pissed me off greatly.

very nice indeed. I am always amazed at what people bid on on ebay. The one I notice is people paying 25 bucks for a modest mouse 7" which UP or Sub Pop still presses and sells for like 5 bucks. People are fucking stupid

So long as the price of the bootleg isn't high and it's clear that it is a copy they're alright. Until recently I only had access to the internet at university so I couldn't have downloaded stuff even if I wanted to. Now that I can I still don't want to use filesharing programmes just because I'm really wary of getting a virus or trojan or somehting. I've never bought a music bootleg so I don't know what their quality is like, but I've bought plenty of unlicensed anime and I'm happy to pay a small amount rather than wait for a week to download a whole series :D But I can't bear it when things like that get overpriced for what they are.

Best thing I saw on ebay= an empty carboard X-Box box that went for around £100! The bidders obviously didn't read the description to find it was an empty box :P I always thought it was the done thing to actually read what you're buying ;)

I encourage everyone to report the auction. Use this form:

Form (http://cgi1.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=InlineSelfHelpWebfor m&wftype=2023&rcode=BN%25P10114&subject=Bootleg%20Recordings&bcrumb=Home%20%3E%20Help%20%3E%20eBay%20Policies%2 0%3E%20Prohibited%20and%20Restricted%20Items%20%3E %20Bootleg%20Recordings)

Also, does anyone know of any other sites with NMH MP3s that I can add to the list?

Have you been seeing a lot more traffic since I put the auction up? I've had several people email me to let me know they were ordeing the last concert from you.

This isn't about ebay policy's its about people using Jeff's work to make money for themselves.

The problem is, a lot of people do not know these are bootlegs. If you read some of the seller's feedback you have negative postings due to people receiving CDRs when they expected a real CD.

If people want to sell their artwork (the case alone, without the music) more power to them. I just don't think people are paying $40 for some color photocopies.

It appears as though my last auction has been taken down. During that time the bootleg auctions have been bidded up. Time to relist.

I agree with William. I don't see a problem with selling boots on line that could be down loaded for free. And I think it is going a bit far asking people to please not buy them and instead download them. When I first started getting into NMH, Of Montreal, OTC, etc... I would look for live recordings and such and did not want to download them because I was not able to do so at school, the only place I could use the internet. So I bought a few boots off of ebay that were probably free some where on the ole world wide web. Some I was happy with others I was not, but it was my responsibility to spend my time and money the way I chose. People can do the research if they want to find these things for free even if there is no link to the free downloads. Let them do it or not do it, it is there choice.

As far as the argument that they are making money off of Jeffs creative work let me use this argument, it may be right or not. Jeff has chosen not to release his rarities album. This could be do to the fact that he does not want people to hear them, should we be downloading them at all if he does not want us to hear them. I have heard that part of the reason he did not approve the finishing of the album was because he did not think the material was good enough to be put out. I don't mean to make a big argument here, but there seems to be enough parenting happening in this world and I feel like we should let people be responsible for themselves in matters like this.

ps I am not one of the sellers of these boot legs.

my guess is that it is so high because it has superman on the cover. The album was recalled because of copy right infringment and the cover with superman is a rarity

It wasn't recalled, they're just not printing it anymore after this. As hypecity said, you could probably find one right now for 12 bucks.

just to clear this up, only one copy of the superman album went for 100 dollars on ebay. This was because it was posted during the two days after the annoucement came that they would be recalled and before the actual release date. There were only two copies on ebay during this time and many people thought that they may be getting a really really rare item. Their loss. The day the album came out in stores there was an immediate influx of copies onto ebay, mine included. Thus prices dropped dramatically, but peopel still didnt think the stores were selling them. I sold two copies for 40 bucks each. Two days after the release date there was over 100 copies on ebay and they were going for about 15 bucks. Thats the current price as well. People arent that stupid on ebay. there was just a real misinterpretation of the supply/demand of those albums the first few days

Just thought I'd share the feedback I've received on this auction. Even though people are offering a "service" by making bootlegs it appears that there is a vast number of fans who want the music without having to pay and arm and a leg for it.

This is the best thing I've ever got on eBay. You are a saint. You should be head of FEMA.

thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you're awesome...anytime i see the "bootlegs" floating around on ebay i get just as pissed as you are.

You are incredible! Thanks for the NMH links. If you sell something I will buy it in gratitude!

Thanks so much for the links! That's awesome of you to put them out there.
-Josh

thanks for posting the links. Rachel

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time
to post links to Neutral Milk Hotel music. Much
appreciated.
Jon

I was so pleased to see your listing. The sites are wonderful, I could not thank you enough.

Thank you so much for the NMH links. We need more people like you on ebay, nay, we need more people like you in the world.

thank you! I've got all this stuff, but like you I hate seeing assholes make money on this stuff. keep up the good work!

As a Neutral milk hotel fan, I thank you for doing this. And for all who like Neutral milk hotel, don't forget to visit elephant6 official forum at e6townhall.com, it's very interesting.

hooray. that has always made me angry when people do that kindof thing.

i'm happy to see that you did this, i'm getting pretty tired of people selling bootlegs on ebay.
