convo with rob schneider, update about jeff

so this may be old news because this story happened in early february '03 when apples came to boston, but i think some of you may find it interesting. i only just joined this board, so this is copied and pasted from my livejournal the night i wrote it.

"so i just had a great experience. i took the bus back from providence this afternoon, then we (mass. hysteria) played the middle east upstairs tonight, and got videotaped for a compilation. it went really well. thanks to ya'll who came out; matt for buying me a newcastle. then when we were done i went downstairs cause the apples in stereo were playing, and i got in for free. they were great, not as good as on record, cause their records have a really good vintage lo-fi sound that didn't really come through live.

after they were done i felt the need to stick around and talk to rob the lead singer, who was possibly the nicest man i've ever met. i mostly wanted to talk to him because he produced what is probably my favorite album of all time, in the aeroplane over the sea by neutral milk hotel, and thank him for it, and compliment him on the amazing production that this masterpiece of an album has. he and his wife (who drums for apples) also played in the band itself for a while. he was so happy to hear about it, and told me about what jeff mangum from neutral milk hotel has been up to cause i was really dying to know; currently living in brooklyn, moving to canada, starting a "secret band" with rob himself. he said "it's really wierd hearing him play such sentimental beautiful music cause he's a really a shy, innocent guy who i've been best friends with since high school." they guy could not stop smiling. neither could i.

when i told him i was in a traditional ska/reggae band that had been playing upstairs he said he loved 60's jamaican music and that his 2 year old son really enjoyed dancing to an old ska tune called "jonah the master." i was psyched.

before i left i felt compelled to ask him what the future of nmh looked like and he said that even "though they haven't played in about 5 years, jeff is just taking some time off to do things for himself (like go to europe and make field recordings of bulgarian folk music), but it looks like they will be playing out again at one point or another. this made my night. i know i cannot die a truly happy person unless this happens and i'm there. i promised myself i would stop everything and take a bus or fly to this show whenever/wherever it occurs."

i believe i posted something on here back in may of 2004 about the apples concert i went to see here in montreal.. rob and i talked for a good hour after the show.. he wanted my roomate and i to stay longer but we had to leave. we spoke of nmh and jeff, and he said that jeff only writes when he's upset.. when he's depressed.. ie. when he needs to vent. rob went on to say that someone could ask him to write a song about puppies, and if the money was good, he'd do it (this was half-jokingly said, but you get the point). he explained that obviously, jeff is not the type of person to do that sort of thing. he went on to explain the deep closness of his relationship with jeff, as they are best friends and that if anyone knew anything about his whereabouts or plans for the future, it would be him. i think i recall him saying that he was just taking it easy and relaxing and that yes, maybe some day they'll tour again as they never really split up. who knows. it was nice to hear it though.
