There was a similar topic at the old boards, so I thought it would be nice to make it here.

I would like to see Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum cover "She Took a Long Cold Look at Me" by Syd Barrett, "I Want Wind To Blow" by The Microphones, "My Back Pages" by Bob Dylan, and Puff The Magic Dragon. :)

I really like the covers I have heard. That Gerbils song "Glue" is great, and so is that Phil Spector one from the Jittery Joe's CD. It seems like the best cover for Jeff Mangum to do would be one that no one would expect, but would make perfect sense, like Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" or something. I don't know. I feel this post could get too fawning, if that's the right word. Maybe "Mustang Sally." That would make NO sense.

I think Jeff singing anything with Stevie Nicks would be pretty damn spiffy-sounding. They've both got such unusual and beautiful voices, they'd make a really interesting harmony, I think.

I wouldn't see them cover anything.
Unless Mangum writes the songs, I don't he can't put his soul into it.
Mangum is not a good singer, but he makes it beatiful. Therefor he can't do a cover of a song an other artist has written.

What do think about John Darnielles (the Mountain Goats) cover of Two-Headed Boy?

I like the Mountain Goats alot, but I think the cover isn't that great.

Well, the Phil Spector cover was pretty good.

the spector cover is just beautiful. also, years ago at the christmas show in athens, jeff sang 'i can't help falling in love with you' and i just about burst into tears. as far as i've heard, he can certainly put his soul into a cover song.

also i wouldn't say he has a bad voice. every review you read talks about his 'nasaly' voice and that irritates me. his voice is unbelievably powerful, that night he wasn't even mic'd and his voice saturated the room and every body in it.

I think that the beauty of Mangum is that his songs are original and completely his own. I like that he hasn't covered too many songs. Although, The Gerbils cover is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard.

i wanna hear him cover a bright eyes song. just because conor oberst and jeff mangum are two extremely different things...there are similarities to some extent, in the awe inspiring "oh my god that's so deep and pertaining to my whole being" lyric they both write. but if jeff mangum screamed a perfect sonnet that would sure be a site to see.
or...
hear.

"One More Cup Of Coffee" By Bob Dylan
"The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton" or "Jenny" or "No Children" or a whole lot of other songs by the Mountain Goats

Actually, I'm kind of glad Jeff's kept his number of covers to a minimum (though the Phil Spector song on the live album is pretty cool).

maybe "Crush" by Jennifer Paige [sp?]

the Dismemberment Plan certainly did a fantastic job of making it a respectable song.

speaking of... maybe a Mangum version of the D-Plan's "Memory Machine," "You Are Invited" or "the City"

oh, and since everyone's gotta do a Zombies cover, i think Jeff would be best suited to make "Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914)" something to worship all over again. man, that would be TOO fine!
