I was extremely excited for e3 this year. The new Zelda game looks beautiful, I can't wait just to play the demo that was there
The PS3 looks neat (this from someone who never plays his PS2), but the rumor is that it will retail at about $500, so I won't consider it till the price drops a bunch.
I admit I'm biased (proud Nintendo fan), but the revolution seems incredible. Let's see:
- Backwards compatibility with Gamecube = Can still play fun games like Mario Kart
- Wireless gaming = Fun, easy way to connect with others, especially my brother many states away.
- Ability to download thousands of NES, SNES, & N64 games = reason alone to buy it. Sony & Microsoft have been dismissing Nintendo recently, but this rich history is something they'll never be able to emulate (unless one of them buys Sega's library or something).

Well actually I have like 4000 snes roms on my XBOX, so yeah. It's not really legal, but what is these days?
I'm also biased with Nintendo, but I feel that they are concentrating on a younger audience now. I've loved every Zelda game (well I never played Zelda II very much), but the one for GameCube really put me off getting one.

I love playing games, I can't wait for the new Zelda and Salaam, I have a CD of Zelda music ('Melodies of Time') so it's not so weird ;) My favourite is Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening but I loved the Wind Waker's design.
At the moment I'm playing Resident Evil 4 which I love. I already played it through on easy mode (some games can be too hard for me!) but it missed sections out so now I'm doing it again on normal mode. I'm also addicted to Age of Empires, I've had it for nearly 10 years but about once a year it lures me back and I play it obsessively for a few weeks. The same thing happens with The Sims.
The consoles I have are Gamecube, SNES, X-Box, Playstation1, Dreamcast and GBA. I used ot have a NES but it died and I borrow an N64 from some friends quite often, when the mood takes me. I go on the Gamecube most though, and will get a Revolution (it comes in Hot Pink! Whoo!) I'm also waiting for the pink DS to come out in Europe and Nintendogs, Animal Crossing DS, Touch! Kirby (Or 'Touch me Up Kirby' as I call it- the DS titles are all so perverse!) and Pac Pix and Meteos.

05-20-2005, 06:03 AM
I agree about the Revolutions design- I loved the look of the Gamecube but the Revolution is too similar to the PS2. But the look of the Gamecube put people off, so much as it pains me I think Nintendo are doing the right thing in making it appeal to the masses [ie the people who just want to buy it to look good in their living room] just to give them a better chance at competing with Sony.
Yey to visiting villages! :) Will Animal Crossing DS be online? I hope so- it would make it last longer. I got fed up with the Gamecube one after all my favourite villagers moved out and left me by myself :( I didn't go on it for so long my town is just filled with weeds and looks nasty! But at least it was responsible for one of the most bizarre moments in gaming, where you get to draw the face onto the cat with no face! It was worth taking the train just for the chance to have a go! :D (I'm easily pleased!)

That's a decent argument, but something about the "officialness" gets to me.

I hate that argument, however. They're stupid for not allowing certain mature games to be available on their systems, but that's not a recent thing (see: Nintendo versus ID Software during the 1990's) ...and besides, what's "younger audience"? I think they're focusing on more fun and more expansive gaming than most games, which seem to get better graphics and more violence, nothing innovative.
Also, you don't know what you're missing with Windwaker. I remember seeing the Windwaker graphics and being SO pissed off. I ignored the game till I started getting free rentals at Blockbuster, and when I did play it? I couldn't put it down. While its replay value is awful, Windwaker looks and plays beautifully and will make Ocarina of Time appear (visually) bad.

Dude, it wasn't an argument, it was just my opinion. I also think that Nintendo are more innovative, and maybe Nintendo has the same target age as always, and I'm the one who has grown up.

I'm sure it's a good game, but I'm so put off by the graphics. And I wouldn't buy a GC just because of one game, I'm not made of money and games are really expensive (at least in Sweden). I never bought many games for my N64, seeing that the "good" (very few btw) games costs like 100$. That's just too much. With my xbox it's easy to get a lot of games at low costs.

I didn't mean like you and I were arguing, I just meant it as a general reason. With the costs you're mentioning, I can sure as hell understand why you feel that way, I probably wouldn't buy anything myself.

I was just saying if you ever get the chance to play it, either on someone else's console or a future one of your own, I strongly suggest you do so. I myself was vehemently against the graphics, but they grew on me a lot.

no way! where'd you get it?
It came with the Official UK Nintendo magazine (a pretty poor magazine but if the freebies are good I'll get it- like inflatable Bullet Bills!) They also did a Super Smash Brothers Melee CD which I wanted for the Kirby music, but when I went into town to get it the next issue was out! :( It's probably on ebay though.
I really liked the look of the Windwaker, but then I really like cartoons and anime so perhaps its to be expected! I'm glad Nintendo don't make gritty real life style games and I absolutely hate violence in games, GTA has a lot to answer for- GTA itself may be really good- since you generally have a choice about the things you do- but its spawned so many cheap clones which think that people only play the GTA franchise for the possible violence instead of the fact that it's a good game.

Yes, the Neverhood is pretty cool, even though I'm not a fan of point-and-click games.
Anyway, about the next-gen consoles:
I think that the XBox 360 is really quite bad looking. That power button is way too huge, and the controllers look as god-awful as they've always been. The only good thing about the XBox controllers is that they felt far more sturdy than the PS2 controllers, and that the triggers are nice for racing games (but nothing else).
I think the PS3 itself is very nice looking, although I'm not sure about the controllers. The controllers certainly look] pretty strange, but until I hold one, I can't say whether or not I'll like it. Maybe it'll be the most comfortable controller ever. Also nice is the three color choices. I'm not a fan of the white, but the silver and black are real pleasing to the eye. Plus, now the Playstation will have the edge over Xbox in the graphics department, given that Microsoft decides to release the 360 this year, which is too early in my opinion. Even the PS3 is a little bit early... PS2 is just finally getting pushed to its limits now.
As far as the Revolution, I don't even know what it looks like, and don't really care, because I'm not interested in it.
So the bottom line is, I will certainly try to buy a PS3. However, I'll be in college, so there's also a good chance that I won't. I will also possibly buy an XBox 360, but I'd probably wait until the price goes down a bit.
everythingfallstogether
05-27-2005, 01:31 PM
ps3 will be in the 500 dollar price range.
xbox 360 is only a tad bit less powerful than ps3. and costs 300. you can customize it with face plates, and the controllers are smaller this time. i don't see the power button as an issue to me. maybe i just hate sony... but then again what good game does playstation 2 have?? besides katamari damasi and maybe ffx. xbox 360 will have halo 3 launch day for ps3. halo 3 will sell more units than the whole psp console. as for revolution. it will not compete. but it will still be good. they're pushing for innovation. not a powerful graphics card.

E3 2005: PS3 Price Revealed?
One of the most expensive consoles ever created, according to Japanese reports.
by Matt Casamassina
May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.
Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The beast of a machine utilizes the powerful Cell processor, a custom-designed graphics chip by Nvidia, and 512MBs of RAM for a quantum leap in performance. The system will also be the first-ever to support high-def movie-playback out of the box, taking advantage of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc format.
Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. If Mainichi Shimbun is correct, gamers will be asked to pay a hefty price for the high-end functionality.
IGN was unable to validate this news with Sony officials. Stay tuned for more as the story breaks.
it's uncertain, but how do you know it will be less?

I agree with almost everything mentioned in this (http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/games/manifesto.html), which I saw was posted on slashdot today.
I love the whole section on "preserving gaming" where it mentions nintendo's declining console sales, and how sony doesn't want to call ps3 a gaming system. It's the support for this trend I find disturbing.

Brien

the link's in the first post, hover over "this"
(one thing I hate about this forum is how links appear, at least on my apples in stereo theme)
although, I'll give you the quote, it's not quite "preserving gaming", that's more my spin on what they said:
17. Don't let other features distract from gaming
As a rule, a console is a better game machine than a cheap PC because all it does is play games. So does anyone else get worried when Microsoft and Sony both boast about their machines' ability to rip MP3's and play movies and chat online and do your taxes?
Doesn't every feature that gets added, by necessity, take designer's time and energy away from the features that make for great gaming? Don't most of you reading this already have the ability to play movies and MP3's and chat online without your future Xbox 360? Wouldn't you prefer your game machine devote all of its muscle to gaming and nothing else?

Never literally convert yen to USD, everythingfallstogether.
I'm pretty sure that if you were to do that, the PS2 would have been $399 or $350 when it first came out. And it wasn't.
I'm not doubting that it won't be more expensive than the PS2 was, but it won't be over $400. Surveys have said that the majority of people won't pay more than that for the PS3, so I don't see Sony selling it for that much.

Mx Vs. Atv Unleashed.
I used to ride motocross when I was yonger, so I'm really excited about motocross games with good physics and graphics and such.
Excitebike rules too.

Good old Excitebike! I miss my NES :( I find it really weird that Nintendo were able to sell all those old games for £15 for the Game Boy Advance, when with a copy of Animal Crossing you can unlock most of them to play on the gamecube. Oh well, can't say I wouldn't do it if I were them! ;)

Resident Evil for the trillionth time!
Xenogears (I promise I will finish it someday)!
And a host of old NES, SNES and Genesis titles.

Dr. Mario - GBA
Animal Crossing Wild World - DS
Trauma Center -DS
U.N. Squadron - SNES
I would also like to express my love for RE4 and Excitebike.
Also, Figglyduff have you managed to unlock the infinite Hand Cannon because that is the most ridiculous way to play through the game.
One last thing to mention Kingdom Hearts II comes out on the 24th.

No, how do I get that? Do I have to play it through on Professional mode or something? (I haven't done that).

Does anyone play Guild Wars? I got it quite recently, its good considering it has no subscription charge but not as social as expensive MMORPGs.

my girlfriends brother has it. its pretty sweet, though they should have made the system more powerful and hd compatable in my opinion. some companies might not want to release first person shooters on the system because it wouldent really allow for amazing graphics, and with that controller first person shooters would be really cool... OH WELL.

Red Steel picked up some good reviews from the UK magazines, that's a FPS.

metroid prime is a really promising fps. and they're already in development for red steel 2. apparently this first one was rushed, and it wa smainly to try to see all they could do with the wii. I'll pass on red steel, but not on red steel 2.
elebits and zelda are the two games i really want.

they say red steel was rushed but i had a quick go and loved it. However zelda is the big seller for Wii. Play that constantly for a year and you might get half way through...

I'm looking forward to Elebits, Zelda, Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Animal Crossing Wii the most I think.
For non-Wii next gen games there aren't many I'm looking forward to except Assassin's Creed and any updates for Knights of the Old Republic or Jade Empire.

they might be fun games but they wont be having the graphical WOW effect you get from playing PC FPS games

I got it. It's a lot of fun. The controller doesn't feel gimmicky, and my first impression with zelda was the remote/nunchuk didn't feel like two different add-ons, but rather a controller that was split to allow movement.

I love the fact that people are breaking their TVs because they can't seem to hold onto the Wii controller... and hucking a piece of plastic as hard as you can at the screen like you do in the bowling game can probably do some damage.
Figglyduff
12-08-2006, 05:26 PM
Yeah people are really clumsy, Nintendo sent out a safety email to people on their mailing lists to tell them how to hold the controllers, dumbasses. Most of the stories I've read about broken TVs are from people who were drinking a lot or people playing for 24 hours straight (probably very sweaty...)
I just saw this funny Mario/GTA video:

I played a Wii today at a nerdy game shoppe. It was extremely enjoyable. Sadly, I didn't get to play Zelda, but the nerdy game shoppe has a lifesize statue of Link in the middle of it, so all was well.
