well... I would have to say of Montreal. and no, I'm not suggesting that they suck, or that they are really bad, or that I could do better. I just don't understand the mad devotion I have witnessed to this band. maybe I just need to get out more...?

just listen to the music and you will understand the devotion

I agree with Mr Hurdy Gurdy - on the basis of their last two albums, Of Montreal aren't even approaching the heights of Gay Parade and Coquelicot, and that's a shame.

Hey, guess who's about to get shot? (me)
Neutral Milk Hotel.
Just bear with me! They have the same problem of overrated-ness that the Beatles do. They are a GREAT BAND, however their fans tend to wage crusades against anyone that doesn't worship their works.
Don't kill me. I love Jeff. Please don't kill me.

The Minders are too simple to be overrated.
whu? they're underrated. i dont think they get enough appreciation for how perfectly constructed their little pop ditties always are. the structures and arrangements may be simple, but they work as well as--if not better than--any guitar pop i've heard come out of the e6. it's too bad they never got as much attention.

Neutral Milk Hotel is definitely the most overrated...and I actually like most of their stuff, but as far sheer composition/instrumentation/imagination, it doesn't even scratch the surface of what Of Montreal has put out. Not saying that Of Montreal is underrated on this message board or with E6 fans...but in general, I think they are one of the most underrated bands in existence right now.
And I'm definitely NOT trying to start a NMH v. OM chain reaction...just puttin' in my two cents.

I'd take Beulah over Minders anyday,as far as the simple pop goes

i enjoy some beulah, but the lyrics and vocals always turned me off. part of the problem is that i can think of lots of other similar-sounding emo bands who do it just as well (or just as poorly, depending on your point of view)...there's nothing there to set them above the faceless crowd. the minders just have a fun punchiness to them that i never really got from beulah, live or on disc.

Overrated where? On these boards I'd say that of Montreal is slightly overrated. Generally in Sweden, Essex Green is easily the most overrated band. And Circulatory System the most underrated.

popular almost always come across as overrated. What's weird is how we perceive online banter in specialized rooms as being popular or overrated, when 99.9% of the world is more than happy to shake their little dicks to Naroon 5 and Charlotte Good.

overrated - anything e6 west
I mean its excellent I own almost the entire catalogue and enjoy it thoroughly, but it just isnt on par with the east. its great indie music... but its no e6
underrated - in the board - the music tapes

beulah was introduced to robert and hil thru demo tape. they mixed all of and recorded a bit of their first two records at pet sounds studio. the first record has the logo and an "official" e6 catalog number. not sure if the second has the logo. at the time i thought they were way too pavementy for e6 but they had the fancy productions and miles def had a lot of e6 spirit in him. to moi the most underrated (actually completely unknown) is vic conrad and the first third. vic is an australian who's debut album was sposed to be the last catalogued e6 release but it never happened. it finally came out on worozonow (sp?). it's got a great gbv/lennon type sound. jim
p.s. see otc live if you can. they were the most godlike live psych machine ive ever experienced. maybe they'll break out the monkey suit!

i'm going to go ahead and take back my vote for elf power as being overrated. while i'm not a huge fan, i like them just fine. that and i haven't really heard most of what is considered to be their best albums.
oh, and i just picked up that vic conrad and the first third album on amazon for a buck and fifty cents. they didn't have any samples so i'm trusting the good von hemmling (who should get some of the underrated votes himself. wild hemmling keeps growing and growing). sounds interesting

I can't understand the bad press the Sunshine Fix have picked up. To me, the first ep and Age of the Sun are great records for what they are - simple, unabashed pop music I adore.
Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't, Great Lakes, the late b.p. helium, Fablefactory, Visitations (whose last album is wonderful, and definitely worth a listen), the Gerbils and the Instruments I find to be underrated, personally speaking.

Overrated? Has to be Neutral Milk Hotel. They were the 1st e6 band I heard and I love them to pieces, but their music is not the cure for cancer.
Underrated? I love Chocolate USA. I just wish I could find someone who has some of the old tapes of the month. I want to hear it all.

Golden Jesus
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Settle down for Lorraine, you inconsequential slab of ynunk. Oggle the perephrial side like your focal, delicately smooth and off. Are business is the business of Kyle, the eloquent Custard of Life. Before us in smiles and drippy appeal, shines the golden dollop that feeds existence, happy. On a sorted plain, above the cretin collectives, we laugh a breeze and wake those on the cusp of Us and the Below. Like a fleeting moment, too short, but with gusto, you relent to a snivelly displeasure. It consumes you in a way less logical, as a casual reminder at the most inappropriate of situations. A flash of brilliance is worth a mile of potatoes, and those who turn their head, they're dead, essentially if not furiously confused. A Minster of you is a sinister in que, holding a spot for the devils and the ticked. Holy emotions choke you still for a brief moment before you began to work on your lunch. Robert Plant appeared, and as ever I truly did not give a fuck, perhaps I suppose I do not care much for Mr. Plant. Afterall it could be said, with little support and a care less for truth, as a storyteller has no friends when the stories quietly end. You'll feel useless for awhile, which will innocently ease in despair before your years, and soon black. In the course of a thought I broke the need to stand, which was replaced with an overpowering penchance for salad. No bowl was too big. I reminded myself of Pithy Raymond, the boyish cleaning women who just so happened to be my bride. In marriage I committed myself, to myself, to be myself, to be Pithy. To others Pithy was not. To me she sprung like Tulip Tuesdays, each day. Like a holiday cheer, casting a golden glow on the spring screen. Everything is green for your soul. Let Jesus in.

i'm with you all the way Harnk....hows jewelly?
i love all of e6 (what i have heard) and don't find any at all overrated. i find nmh a great band but in my opinion they don't fit in to the e6 ethos (whatever that is). my pathetic attempt at explanation is as thus, all e6 music makes me smile and be happy and love life and what the world has to offer, nmh makes me want to drive off a cliff.
most underrated - major organ, the more i hear that album the better it gets...

How kind of you to ask. Jewelie has made a miraculous recovery, and she was misdiagnosed about some of her symptoms, so we'll have her around maybe another year.
i find quite absurd to talk about "overrated" e6 bands really

Translation for the Mayor of Simpleton: somebody gets offended and starts spewing F bombs=25% of Connor Oberst's lyric writing technique.
re: sunshine fix. i was ho-hum over the debut ep and loved the first album 100%, but that second album was and is a terrible piece of work. like the worst possible bar band material, living up (oops, i mean down) to the lameness of their live show. lifeless, mediocre competency at its worst. and somehow the bonus dvd manages to top it all with its amateurish vids and desperately "trippy" feel. my friend, a video editor, laughed like a lunatic when he saw that thing, speculating that the makers had just recently learned how to use the programs and were tastelessly showing off all the effects tricks they knew. doesnt give me any joy to take down the sunshine fix, but this last album really WAS that bad. in all sincerity, i'm sure better things will follow.

Oh, did I say "I don't understand your joke?" What I meant was "your joke sucks." And for the record, I wasn't offended at all. If I were I would've had a better argument than "FUCK YOU **** YOU."

overrated- otc's dusk at cubist castle. Poor production, mediocre melodies, too long, somehow makes best of lists while black foliage languishes in its shadow.
underrated- music tapes' first imaginary symphony. musique concrete meets they might be giants. i think this is the most imaginative and unique work in the e6 cannon.
honorable mention:
overrated- new of montreal
underrated- old of montreal
