I've nicked this idea from my mate's blog, but it's still a great topic for a message board: the worst songs ever written.

I'm going to start with a controversial one, but one I stand by wholeheartedly:

'Imagine' by John Lennon.

without a doubt... the "Shoop-Shoop Song".... yes

wingedfeetxc

most likely some of the stuff I've written.

if not that, then "The Reason" by Hoobastank

and Imagine, while overated a bit, is still an amazing song.

'The Birdie Song'; 'Agadoo' by Black Lace - most 'novelty' songs are unbearable.

those songs by tatu were pretty horrid. at least "the reason" by hoobastank was catchy, if awful. bad, but not the worst.

I think you were trying to be subversive in saying that John Lennon's "Imagine" is one of the worst songs ever written, but any way you cut it "Imagine" is a great tune.

i know they've always been a whipping post
but i have to say it again..

creed will go down in history as one of the biggest jokes

"the reason" is the worst song ever. i could have written those lyrics in preschool.

but you didn't write them.

'louie louie' is in fact the best song ever written, and that aint no joke.

andrew wk's 'fun night' is the 54th best song ever written.

'imagine' is the 1,659th best song ever written.

worst song ever is a tie: polyphonic spree's cover of 'carol of the bells' and the smiths' 'meat is murder.' plus maybe something by the doors. but not 'touch me.'

why have you tried 15 times to hear the whole thing? i heard it once through and decided never again.

edit: catchy doesn't mean good. the song is terrible, but i can think of a lot worse than that.

well, "shake yer dix" by peaches and "shut up" by kelly osbourne are a lot worse than hoobastank's hit. and shania twain's "man i feel like a woman" is pretty damn offensive. or how about anything by celine dion. even if you dislike the naive and perhaps hypocritical sentiment of john lennon's "imagine," it's worlds better than any of those. :)

embarrassed to admit it, but i'm a 'no more lonely nights' fan. i'm not touching 'ebony and ivory,' though. personal vote for worst mccartney song would have to be 'biker like an icon' ("there was a girl/who loved a biker/but the biker/didn't like her").

you're all very very wrong.

this is really easy, the worst song ever written is with out a doubt

"i sent a thank you card to the guy who raped you" by anal cunt.

also "i just saw the gayest guy ever" by the same people is in a close second slot.

This conversation begins and ends with Captain & Tenille's barf-incuding rendition of "Muskrat Love."

Period, end of story, take it to the bank, cash it, and buy yourself a plasma screen. Worst. Song. Ever.

The only thing in this world that is more rampantly terrible than that song is the fact that I actually OWN the record that song is on.

Sorry about that.

what would you expect lennon to do, sell all of his possessions and live on the street in order to write a song about his dream for humanity? the fact is that his job as well as everyone elses makes them money in order to support themselves. some better than others of course. personally, i'm a firm believer in capitalism and think there should be no government welfare system at all. however, i do love the song and find it beautiful in its simplicity.

to be a horrible song, it requires three things: terrible music, melodies, and lyrics. if you don't like imagine's lyrics, fine. but you can't honestly tell me you don't like the music and the melody. find another song to bludgeon that truly deserves it.

how about 'we built this city' by starship.

I recognize that there are no 'guilty pleasures' in pop music, as it is amoral. But you'ld better explain yourself. Cuz Wham is annoying at best, and WMUBYGG is the song on infinite repeat in the bowels of hades.

Maybe it's an ironic thing, like when critics praise a crappy Britney Spears or Kylie Minogue song.

jml
05-12-2005, 01:42 PM
it's not necessarily ironic when a critic (or anyone) admits to liking a solid pop song. britney and minogue arent trying to scam anyone...they (and their handlers) seem to know damn well they're making disposable pop fun, and if it's catchy it has pretty much done its job. and yes, "i'm a slave for u" was excellent. you have to consider these things on their own terms.

And for the record, "Milkshake" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" are both great songs.

There is a reason "We Built This City" has gotten press from music critics at VH1 and Blender and whoever. It is the obviously worst song ever.

But everyone knows this, it's boring and safe. This is like making a "best band ever" thread and having everyone name the Beatles.

So which is more of a cop-out, saying "the Beatles were the best band ever" or saying that your favorite band is (assuming the two are not one and the same)? What if your favorite band is the Beatles. What if your most hated song was specifically "We Built This City" long before VH1 notoriously picked it? I'm sorry that I knew that fact about it being at the top of that countdown, but at least I'm not alone in having watching that lame show. Just some stupid questions. :)

May I nominate "Bluebird" by Paul McCartney? In three minutes he repeats the word "bluebird" fifty one times. I counted twice to double check. Fifty one. Other than that song, though, Band on the Run is a pretty solid album.

also, avril lavigne in general
and a perfect circle's cover of imagine is, i assure you, far worse than the original.

creed is pretty downright awful... yeah.

i think gwen stefani's songs are pretty funny, if nothing else. hollaback girl is really catchy, and "this shit is bananas B A-N A-N-A-S" is hilarious.

Any song by 3 Doors Down.

To this day, I still can't see why they're popular...

The songs aren't catchy.

They make up for this fact by not playing rap/rock, metal core, emo, etc. (basically any of the popular genres at the moment that aren't necessarily supposed to be catchy)

None of the band members have any charisma.

The lead singer isn't attractive in any way.

The lyrics aren't easily relatable and even if they were, they aren't easily memorable.

They music videos are just plain boring.

They play the most boring, repetitive, derivative rock out there, but they haven't gone the way of most of their contemporaries and been one-hit wonders. They keep coming back making horribly bland rock music.
