Are we talking children's chapter books or picture books?

I really loved Ted and Dolly's Submarine Surprise as far as picture books go.
The Chronicles of Narnia were probably my favorite children's chapter books.

What ages do you define for a child?

1-5?
5-10?
10-15?

1-5 either "I like me" or "The Journey of the Moonjelly" (i think it's called that)
5-10 the "Alanna the Lioness" quartet by Tamora Pierce
10-15 "Demian" by Hermann Hesse or "Oryx and Crake" by Margarette Attwood

hmm...the chronicles of narnia, those stories about the sideways school by louis sachar, this book about a rainbowy dragon or something....and a talking cat...i donno.

i wish i had read Mitchell is Moving when I was a kid. Then again, I might not have realized how beautiful it was.

I (still) read mostly kids books (chapter books, YA and Juvenile). Here are a few recent favorites:

The Game of Sunken Places by M T Anderson
Owl in Love by Patrice Kindl
Everything on a Waffle, The Trolls, Canning Season, or any other book by Polly Horvath

And I loved those Alanna books growing up. Pierce has written five zillion books now that are unfortunately all the same.

But Not the Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton was my favourate childrens book when I was a kid. Solid twist ending.

Right now my favourate children's book is The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish by Neil Gaiman. Dave Mckean's Children's art is beautiful.

ok, i used to love this one picture book called "THE BOY WITH SQUARE EYES." It was about a boy who watched so much freakin TV his eyes turned into squares, and the obvious problems that come with having square eyes. It's actually pretty psychedelic with some pretty mind blowing illustrations and druggy undertones.
